After initial equipment failure, involving a cox box being passed from Trinity->Magdalene->Clare->Trinity, we had a controlled row up to our station, including a very quick practice start in Plough Reach.

After spinning, we drew into the wrong station, but were quickly ousted by Homerton and their shifty looking bank party.

Our start was fairly neat and powerful, and we settled into a good rhythm, with lots of work going down in the water.

Behind us, Homerton closed slightly to about a length, whilst ahead Girton pulled away. Just before Grassy, Homerton bumped out, leaving us with the challenge of making up several lengths on Girton to claim our bump. However, ahead of them Queens' were just too slow and Girton unfortunately bumped out in Plough Reach.

We continued to row powerfully and it initially looked set to be a fairly comfortable row over. We had not accounted for the very speedy Catz crew behind us however, who gained continuously around Ditton and on the Reach. Thankfully, they had to finish at the Railway Bridge, by which time they were within a canvas. Coming under the bridge, we wound it down and collapsed, relieved, on the other side momentarily before being reminded that we had yet to finish.

A gentle paddle took us (almost) to the finish at Peter's Posts, before we were again told that we had _still_ not finished! (Thanks Neil).

We therefore rowed over, with excitement and variation provided kindly by Catz, and their failed overbump attempt!

Well done everyone, and thanks very much to our enthusiastic bank party. :)

Roll on tomorrow; Queens' - we're coming to get you!

Event: Novice Fairbairn Cup 2001 -

The 1st novice women came 5th in the novice fairbairns, keeping up the good novice women's results in the club for the last 3 years. Abandoning the war paint, and unfortunatly a crew member down (note to future lower boats captains: ask all novices if they have any compulsary trips to the Tate Art Gallery on the day of novice Fairbairns before picking crews), the crew raced a good solid race. Stealing the stroke of the 2nd novice VIII (who'd already raced the course once), and putting her on bowside, they were ready to go.

Tom had the 'great' idea of going for a quick paddle before the race, pushing off 5 minutes before we were suppossed to be marshalling the marshals went crazy. After a good few minutes of '1st + 3rd what are you doing?' (classic quote of the day: Marshal to a Queens novice boat: 'Queens, what are you doing?', Queens: 'we don't know') and '1st + 3rd you'll be disquallified if you don't spin and go back NOW' (Tom: 'don't worry, keep rowing'), they came back to to the boathouse and marshalled. Going off behind LMBC they had a good start and were looking comfortable across the course. There were no major disasters in the boat. The 7 strong bankparty however had a bit of a problem with a truck blocking the whole road - meaning that the 1st VIII got a few strokes of rowing without a crazed shouting from the bank distracting them. The girls rowed a focussed and powerful race.

Despite a number of them almost throwing up on the finish line were still in good spirits and managed to sing all the way back to the boat house. They pissed off Downing the most, changing the lyrics of 'we'd rather be at Oxford than St Johns', to 'we'd rather be at Oxford than at Downing'. Loving the controversy this caused they sang other 'adapted' versions at Robinson and Jesus (after telling them that Jesus would add 10 secs to our time if they didn't stop singing they sang 'we'd rather be at Jesus than at Oxford') but manged to get back to the boat house alive.

They (and the club) should be proud of what they acheived in less than ideal circumstances yesterday. I certainly am.

Event: Queens' Novice Ergo Competition 2001 - 2nd division

There were fantastic performances form the 2nd VIII. Being a rower down, the amazing Emily Chappell offered to do 2 500m pieces for us. She gave everything for her first one, collapsing off the erg, only to get back on a few minutes later to put in another respectable performance.

Event: Queens' Novice Ergo Competition 2001 - 1st division

The 1st novice women were the first 1st & 3rd crew to 'race' (if thats an appropriate word?). We had decided to enter the newly chosen fixed crews into the competition, and not just the best erg times. This makes their performance even more creditable. They came 8th in their heat, with p.b's from over half the crew. A p.b by at least 2 seconds was put in by bow girl Hannah Barry, despite her falling off her seat. It was a strained heat, with new rules (that we didn't know about) put in and taken out again within about 5 mins (when the computer system worked and then broke down!).

The final was at 10.00pm, and was delayed (meaning that the beautiful and diligent women's lower boats captains had been at Queens for over 5 hours). As the standard this year was so high, we decided that our aim for the evening was to come top 5, which would mean moving up significantly from 8th. Fantastic perfomances were put in by everybody, Hannah pulled 1.53 (managing to stay on her seat this time!), Nonny pulled her first sub 1.50. Everyone gave it everything. To finish 3rd was a brilliant achievement.

Andrew got us psyched up before the race and put some kind of killer instinct in us. That strategy worked, we wanted it and we went and got it. Ra Ra 1st and 3rd.

Every year the thongs win drumps - and every year people claim we did not as we cheated. two years ago we apparently went to the wrong finish (i organised it - i should know where the finish was) - and i can't remember why we didn't wn last year (when we actually did). we won. i still have the headache from winning now. evil drumps (sorry - treasure hunt).

Oh - the 2001 drumps were EVIL. I remember being in JPD's room and being told to finish my drink by some 'marshal' (perhaps Jon Glass) I replied 'no' and that i was going to be sick - so the nice marshal let me leave the room. i also have vague recollections of dan jane and someone else who was in the 2nd lent viii carrying me between stations. that was a hard yr to be victorious in - well done RTT!!!! The 'thongs' have still won for the last three years though...

I remember being in the 2nd viii (which also contained the mighty Russell and the even mightier Aiken) that was about 1/4 of a length off being over-bumped by these bad-boys on the 1st day of the Mays and consequentally were bumped by them a few days later. Glad you got them back. Rah rah!
Edit: Amelia is as mighty as Catherine when she is not injured. Both are mightier than I.
