After a good start we were well away from Girton and going for the bump on Selwyn. Unfortunately carnage in the gut caused both Selwyn and Newhall ahead of them to stop (they had a rerow later). So through the corners it was down to just us and Girton, who stayed pretty much on distance. Around Ditton they began to close up and we had a tough race up the reach with them snapping at our heels. Guttingly they managed to hit us with only a few strokes to go.

Difficult to describe without use of expletives. Bow 7 had a confused start after we were blown into the bank, (at least I think that's what happened, unless CCAT have taken up telekinesis). We got back together well though, and with all VIII rowing pushed away. But not enough. Magdalene failed to go fast enough to get them before they got us. We were bumped in Plough reach.

But we rowed really hard and got up to half a length off CCAT. Had a great start and held them off for a good while before getting bumped outside the Plough.

We set off determined to row over and not get spoons, sadly Magdalene had other ideas. The start was not quite as brilliant as friday but we quickly got the boat up to speed and magdalene did not get too close too quickly. However they were a fast crew and by Ditton were aiming their bows into us. At that point Julia (subbing for Alex) called for a push, and push we did, dramatically getting clear water again and allowing Julia to move the stern around to safety. Up the reach we kept pushing away, but sadly getting bumped became unavoidable. It was very disapointing to get spoons, and especially to be hit by a crew who we took down last Mays, but it was a good row, we gave it absolutely everything we could. This year has not been good, but there is now a core of experienced rowers who can go out for revenge next year!

A technical bump. Scratched due to failure to find sub.

After a term of fire and flood the Ladies 1st VIII were prepared for battle today, albeit minus our college chaplain Ruth who is unfortunately too ill to row (many thanks to Cass Chideock for subbing at bow). Despite some pre-race nerves (50% of the crew have never rowed in the bumps before) the row down was focused. Our start was good, though not as fast as the neat Catz crew behind who gained on us. However we pushed away from them into Clare, unhindered by 7 catching a crab under the motorway bridge. Clare bumped out leaving us clear water to continue our fight with Catz, themselves pursued by Girton who bumped them in the gut. Thus alone, aside from a sizeable bank party, we proceeded to the railway bridge. The row was powerful and determined, yet again the crew made it clear that we will not be beaten. We look forward to an exciting race tommorow.

As expected a very exciting day for the 1st Ladies! Coming under the motorway bridge we closed up on Churchill, and by first post had 6 to 8 foot of overlap. Unfortunately the fast Girton crew behind also had overlap on us. The Churchill cox took evasive action, going very wide round the corner, and refused to acknowledge. Meanwhile Girton made a final push for us and Will had no choice but to raise his hand. An immediate re-row was decided upon, so First and Third birds achieved their aim of rowing in M1 (well at least down to the start). Various delays followed during which the crew became increasingly wound up - not aided by some rather unsporting behaviour from Girton and Churchill - and also cold as it had started to snow. We were not as tense as Girton though, as one of their crew suffered a panic attack and the re-row was cancelled (if anyone fron Girton reads this we hope your 2(?) girl is OK now). We are now waiting to hear what the outcome will be...watch this space.

This was a respectable result against a good crew. They were simply faster off the start, but then failed to increase the distance over the course as we pushed it right to the end.

Rowing with an illegal sub and with half a crew that can't actually make the bumps, this 'Ladies VIII' enjoyed a low-rating course and set a good time...

The crew had a good row, looking technically very competent and obviously putting lots of work down. With so much disruption this term due to weather, illness and injury I am even more pleased with the result and I really think they have done well. There was a lot of competition for only 9 spaces so to be second fastest non-qualifier is very respectable.

This began much better with us level with Pembroke going up the reach. But then a strong gust of wind caused us to struggle while Pembroke made their getaway. Overall a very disppointing day of unrepresentative rowing.

The ladies may VIII raced with a complete crew in perfect conditions at Womens henley on Saturday. Having been drawn against churchill we were very much hoping to get through the first round. Both crews were fractionally late to the start, much to the displeasure of the race officials, so things were a little tense getting on the stake boat. From the go signal Churchill quickly moved away from us, getting about 3/4 length ahead. However, in our crew chat we had discussed never letting their stern past our 3, and this proved to be particularly pertinent. First and Third Birds pushed through churchill, taking back the distance lost with a powerful and determined row while churchill struggled to retain their lead. We finished only two feet behind after a very close race to the finish. It was disappointing to lose but a truly great row which the crew should be proud of.
