Coxing standard by Dubya - Mon 6th Oct 2003, 11:13am
The email about starting up soc-rowing-coxes again mentions people making requests for coxes to sub into outings should state what "standard" of cox they require. It occurs to me that there is currently no way to quantify this apart from the very inadequate "first boat", "second boat", "third boat" etc which mean different and often random things from college to college and from year to year.

I wonder if we could set up a coxing standards group. We'd get a bunch of reasonable coxes together and make up a coxing standard test for a bunch of classes. I'm thinking along these lines.

Class I. New coxes. Test for this class should require demonstration of COMPLETE knowledge of relevant rules of the river.

Class II. Skilled lower boats cox. Test for this class should require demonstrated ability to steer safely and communicate with other river users (eg observe an outing). Maybe a written or practical test on basic rowing technique from cox's perspective.

Class III. Skilled college cox. Test for this class should require demonstrated ability to cox safely in racing conditions including some bumps experience, plus requirements for previous classes.

Class IV. University level. Should be granted automatically to coxes who get university colors, (upon demonstration of Class II knowledge on the Cam ;). But should also be available to college coxes with substantial off-Cam racing, and pass a test involving coxing a crew of some reasonable standard and getting a pass from that crew. (tbd)

Class V. Really good people.

Sounds a bit too hard to administer - who's going to be bothered to a) take the tests b) administer them.

If coxing standard is so important for subs, why not allow coxes to submit a 'coxing CV' on their website profiles, describing their experience in more depth. The same might also be useful for sub rowers (e.g. length of time rowing + boats rowed in + last 2k score + ARA points, etc.)

Is this going to be a Trinity-only thing or are we then going to impose it on the rest of CU? You may want to look at OURCs' system - they have similar stuff there.

I was thinking it could be a Trinity thing, constructed in such a way that others would find it useful. In this way we could end up providing a service for other colleges... and have some measure of control.

OK then...
Assuming the Club Captain of Coxing is responsible for administering the tests, and that everyone who wants to cox will take them because doing so will be the done thing (nb that this will require a leap of faifth at the start, but will be fine once it's established), I would say that:
Maybe Class I and Class II should both be Class I but with "dry start" and "wet start" elements. So a person could be totally up to speed on the rules and the theory (NB can get theory by attending the coxing lectures in October) which would qualify for the "dry start" element, and then get qualified for the "wet start" by, in John's words, demonstrating ability to steer safely and communicate with other river users.
Essentially my point is some parts of John's Class II shouldn't follow Class I but should run alongside. This would be the benchmark for people to reach before novice racing.
Then have a Class II which includes a bit of race experience but also a test which shows some knowledge of e.g. coaching commands, sports pyscology, motivation. You'd try to hit this in your first year.
Then have Class III which is better than Class II. A requirement of retaining Class III is that you have to coach Class I and II and possibly set the exams (this would be especially so if it became University wide).
Class IV - agree with John, by reasonable standard I assume you mean e.g. a Henley crew from outside of College?
Class V - this is verging on international now, isn't it...

Yes, but we need to have something to which Henry can aspire.

All of this is going to add a whole new dimension to the noble sport of ARA card top trumps!
