Gym erg style guide by Simon - Mon 18th Nov 2002, 1:42pm
Anyone who has used an erg in a gym during the holidays will have been able to enjoy that smug feeling as you under rate someone on the ergs who just does not know how to row and is flummoxed as you pull splits which are far better than them. This thread is to enable us to contrast and compare "gym erg" technique.

As well as a fantastic piece of skill witnessed at the Indoor champs, with a contestant tapping up at the finish, my particular favourite is someone at my gym in London who manages to use their back twice in every stroke. Pure class.

It's important not to waste time separating, I mean why waste time on the recovery when you could be dragging yourself up the slide...

Call yourself a gym erger - why are you using the slide!

No, no, no. Using the slide is a vital part of the technique. The handle is supposed to remain stationary in the middle, whilst your legs and arms work simultaneously in anti-phase.

Make sure you set the fan on 10...

The head should never move. The rest of the body pivots beneath it, with any actual movement of the handle not the objective but merely a minor side-effect. This is the erg-based implementation of Nietzsche's observation that "When one rows it is not the rowing which moves the ship: rowing is only a magical ceremony by means of which one compels a demon to move the ship".

Neither split nor rating should ever be held constant - with a "long erg" lasting 3-4 minutes, you will always be just getting going, striding down or winding up for a sprint finish.

I remember the good old days when Graham "standard deviation" Fisher would take to the erg in search of a good 2k time. Bets would be taken on what the difference would be between his highest and lowest splits, and we would invariably underestimate by an order of magnitude, as he would astound us with his head-down-half-slide-slower-than-Henry-Ballman one stroke, over-rate-beast-it, ignoring-the-effects-of-last-night's-burger, world-record-pace the next stroke technique. Unfortunately, he then did some training and was far too good to ever be entertaining again. Some people are no fun...

My effort this Sunday wasn't entertaining but it was crap, involving shambolic transport arrangements, a bit of a cold and a "wouldn't have done well anyway" resignation. Didn't even make it to Birmingham - went back to college for a fry-up instead.
