Does Aerodynamics matter in rowing? by JSB - Fri 15th Mar 2013, 10:17am
From Professor Tony Purnell's proposed 4h year engineering projects:

"Aerodynamics is of second order importance to rowing as the boats move through the air quite slowly. Is this misguided? What is the average cross wind for a season's rowing in major events? Could the rowers, the rigs, the oars, the boats be improved (within the regulations) to lower the aerodynamic drag experienced?"
1+3 In Charge. Again. by Rich - Fri 9th Nov 2012, 6:39pm
Not content with ruling the UK (plenty of Lords in our ranks), 1+3 is now making a play to rule the heavens. We congratulate the cox of the 1975 & 1976 May VIIIs on being appointed the Archbishop of Canterbury - see this article. We are still waiting for confirmation of Peter Brandt being installed as Supreme Ruler of All Existence - can't be long now.

Internet Explorer 9 by Neil T - Wed 22nd Feb 2012, 12:47pm
My computer decided to install IE9 of its own accord last night. The FaT website now looks weird and won't display any images (other websites seem unaffected). Can I do anything about this or is it something to do with old-style code having been rendered obsolete?

Rowing video quality by RTT - Mon 15th Mar 2010, 6:40pm
I suspect this issue has been tackled by many of us before, so I was hoping to gather suggestions and information into one place.

The problem is simple to frame: What is the best and most practical way to take, process and display video of people rowing, assuming the camera is being used on a bike?

I know that using a tandem can have very positive effects on the raw video, but even then there is lots of shaking involved. How can this be reduced at time of capture? What tools do you / have you used to process the footage? What file types lend themselves best to storing and playing footage of rowing?

Please fire away with suggestions / further questions etc. and hopefully we'll gather a bit of a guide for anyone trying to video rowing in future. (4 replies...)
Pedro at sea by Emma - Thu 11th Mar 2010, 11:46pm
Hi all,

For anyone who would like to follow Pedro's progress in his Atlantic crossing, the website is www.onemillionstrokes.org.uk. After five days at sea the crew are coping well and making good progress of 60-70nm a day.

The daily blog is updated usually around 7pm - although unfortunately for avid blob-watchers the satellite tracker only updates sporadically about twice a day. Any messages left on the site will be relayed to the team and are really appreciated by the guys.

Cheers,

In January 2010 I'm going to follow in Dan and Rich's 'footsteps' and row across the Atlantic. I've set up a website called One Million Strokes (it's just over 3000 miles!) at www.onemillionstrokes.org.uk , it's still a work in progress. Take a look if you have a minute. Thanks!
Rowing aid on BBC's Dragon's Den by Mark - Thu 30th Jul 2009, 3:48pm
An interesting GCSE D&T concept from a student and rower on Dragon's Den tonight:

Two plastic/rubber blocks that surround the handle, one for each hand, that prevent wear to the hands and blister formation "without interfering with rowing technique".

Will post a BBC iPlayer link when available. (2 replies...)

Alastair Hignell by Simon - Sun 14th Dec 2008, 10:46pm
Alastair Hignell was featured in Sports Personality of the Year this evening. For those who don't know, he was an excellent rugby commentator on FiveLive who retired this year. He has degenerative MS, and broadcast with it for eight years, without the illness being widely known by the general public.

Anyway, they said on the show that he was the last person to captain both CUCC and CURFC. He still holds the Cambridge points record for a Varsity rugby march. He has scored a try for England and a century against the West Indies (the latter for his county side). Astonishing.

PS Anyone want to write a "best radio commentator" poll?
Pembroke's Boat Burning by JDT - Sun 22nd Jun 2008, 6:33pm
Okay, so whatever happened to the Pembroke boat burning?

This is a tale to make us all realise how great Charles is. To re-cap, a boat burning organised by Charles goes as follows: Boat is taken to Backs; Boat is Burned; ????; Profit.

How the boat burning went for Pembroke:

> Boat was thrown into the river to get it to the other side by swimming along with it.

> Boat then carried to Pembroke

> Boat then covered in Petrol (yes, Petrol)

> Boat then lit with a lighter (yes, a lighter) by the W1 cox.

> Boat explodes with a bang; cox gets badly burned; rower gets injured; everyone else falls over.

> PCBC Dinner is a little bit unhappy. (9 replies...)

SCUBA divers cannot pass wind... by Simon - Fri 4th Jan 2008, 5:18pm
SCUBA divers cannot pass wind at depths of 33 feet or below
Someone just told me this but I am struggling to believe it. Can anyone tell me whether it's a fact or fiction, and provide supporting evidence?

If it helps, at 33feet the water pressure is equal to 1 atmosphere. (4 replies...)
Dengue fever in Cambridge? by S.L. Stoneman - Sat 29th Dec 2007, 7:53pm
Found on Wikipedia when trying to research dengue fever. I can think of several ways to describe East Anglia but "developed, tropical nation?" Don't think so

One major difference, however, is that malaria is often eradicated in major cities, whereas dengue is often found in urban areas of developed tropical nations, including Singapore, Taiwan, Brazil & East Anglia
It's kit Jim, but not as we know it by Simon - Sun 1st Jul 2007, 11:30pm
While I'm away sailing (and proudly using my 2nd Mays top to protect against the Biscay elements), a small poser to keep you amused over the summer.... What's the most obscure/impressive place anyone's ever worn a piece of 1st & 3rd kit?

Trumps by Simon - Thu 14th Jun 2007, 12:54pm
Graham and I are renowned for being Far Too Competitive. We'll try to out-do each other on anything - pointless trivia, highest heart rate when training, whatever...

But there's nothing quite like a game of top trumps. Except we don't always have a set of cards to hand. Which is why we invented ARA-card trumps (only works if you're club secretary and have about 30 of the things).

The most recent game is "Seen on the train to Waterloo trumps" where Graham has just matched my "my-friend-Laura-from-Selwyn's dad" with a "Kieran West".

So what next? Well that's what this thread is for: to let you know what we're trumping with next, and to share your experience of stupid games of one-upmanship... (24 replies...)

Small Boats Regatta by BJ - Wed 25th Apr 2007, 1:02pm
As there are 'too many' events in the Small Boats Regatta, it's a bit hard to get at them all in order to add results and reports, so I'm linking them all here:

Maiden Sculls
Fairbairn Junior Sculls
Women's Championship Sculls
Colquhouns
Lowe Double Sculls
Foster Fairbairn Pairs
Magdalene Silver Pairs

And yes, I realise that Colquhouns isn't technically in the Small Boats Regatta...
Fours head by Simon - Mon 2nd Apr 2007, 7:00pm
A bit of early warning if you're planning on being in a senior squad this Mich term, and aiming to go to the Fours Head. They've changed the rules to say that all sweep crews must have at least two points between them. Tin pots all round then!
LOST TRAINERS by Dan Newton - Tue 13th Mar 2007, 10:48pm
This post is a last resort before email spam as I have asked most people who I remember seeing on the night of the boat club dinner...

I woke up Sunday morning having lost various things, including my memory, but having gained a pair of TRAINERS in a JOHN LEWIS bag. Nobody has yet been to claim them from my room and I can't remember to whom they belonged. If you know someone who is looking for some trainers then I have them. If you know someone who is looking to buy some second hand trainers then put a £10 cheque in my p.hole and I'll post them to you.
End of an era!! by Martin P - Mon 12th Mar 2007, 11:06am
I'm sure many people out there will be interested and pleased to hear that Dubya's PhD thesis is at the binders as of this morning and is being submitted today!! Congrats John. It feels a momentus day - for me especially given that you started rowing the same term I did, it's truly the end of an era!
Also seems a good opportunity to link to The spoof manifesto - author unknown.
Thank you by Simon - Thu 1st Mar 2007, 12:57pm
One thing which I don't think gets said enough on this website is thank you to the webmaster. Currently Bryn, originally Martin, and with others along the way, they have built a website which remains the envy of other sports clubs both in Cambridge and beyond. Although the site looks the same, it's clear that the improvements both big (BumpIT) and small (changing code to generate Torpids rules bumps charts) are ongoing and also a lot of work. The fact that I can put in all these links as well just makes it more fun.

Next week is busy and stressful for everyone, but thanks to their work this site has become a brilliant reference point for live information and an archive of what's gone before.

Thanks guys! (5 replies...)
A Few Good Umpires by Michael Parker in the Mays 2002 Bumps Programme - Thu 1st Mar 2007, 8:57am
TOM CRUISE (Coach): Did you order the rerow?
JACK NICHOLSON (Senior Umpire): You want answers?
TOM CRUISE: I think I'm entitled.
JACK NICHOLSON: You want answers?!
TOM CRUISE: I want the truth!
JACK NICHOLSON: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has bumps races through the gut. And those bumps have to be umpired by men with bikes. Who's going to do it? You? The Cam Conservators? LMBC? I have greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for your cox and you curse Grassy. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that your bump, while tragic, occurred because we were trying to clear the river. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, clears the river. You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at Boat Club dinners, you want me on that bike. You need me on that bike! We use words like overbump, canvas, First Post, one-minute gun... we use these words as the backbone to a life spent umpiring something. You use 'em as a punch-line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very 'racing' I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it. I'd prefer you just said thank-you then went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a bib and work as an umpire. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!!
TOM CRUISE: Did you order the rerow??
JACK NICHOLSON: You're damn right I did! (1 replies...)

FaTBCFC vs BPBCFC football match by FaTBCFC 1st XI Captain 2007 - Fri 19th Jan 2007, 4:19pm
I am delighted to announce that the first annual FaTBCFC vs BPBCFC football match will kick off at 2pm on Saturday 17 March, at the Cranmer Road pitch (near Selwyn).

If you would like to play, then please get in touch with me (bjg32 at cam.ac.uk) if you are a current member of First and Third, or with Neil Talbott (neiltalbott4 at hotmail.com) if you are a member of Black Prince. All levels of experience and skill are encouraged and, in the unlikely event that we have more than eleven players, we shall play rolling subs and everyone will get at least half a game.

We are also looking for a referee (names have been mentioned...) and maybe even linesmen ('assistant referees') if anyone's keen. Please get in touch with me if you are willing to help out!

After the match we expect to celebrate St Patrick's Day in an Irish-themed pub, or maybe just Wetherspoons, with a Justice-style post-match analysis. All are welcome, even if you haven't taken part in the match! (5 replies...)

Mays pictures by Martin P - Sun 25th Jun 2006, 9:42pm
About half way through my stash of pictures from the Mays.... the rest will follow hopefully by the end of this week.

Favourites so far... are this and this. Special mention must also go to the 5th boats catches. Very photogenic! Sorry that not all crews are as well represented as the 5th VIII! Not only did they do more rowing than anyone else... but it is much much easier taking these in the early divisions with fewer bikes and people about.
Set Phasers to Buft by Simon - Mon 19th Jun 2006, 12:05pm
Just stumbled upon the Captains' meeting minutes - was starting to think that nothing has changed in 5 years when I saw the bit about the Mays being sponsored. And then I saw Paragraph 9... blimey. Managed to change a signifcant rule in bumps (i.e. we're not talking about the sandwich boat's white flag here) unanimously.
Just wondered what people thought. (26 replies...)

This term's results by Martin P - Mon 15th May 2006, 10:06pm
Does anyone know of (and can spot) any results from this term still missing? I've done a bit of a check through, added a few missing ones I noticed from the small boats regatta and tidied up a few loose ends. It's really great so many (almost all) results are getting put into this thing, but please try and get it done even when the races don't go as hoped.

Also added the usual college archives (sorry these are so late) for the Head of the Cam and the Head 2 Head.

Tide Tables on the BBC by jmg - Fri 27th May 2005, 9:10am
In addition to the controversial new TV forecasts, the BBC seem to have made some quite positive changes to their weather website, including tide tables. Not being a regular on the tideway, I don't know whether this is well known and understood, but I wonder if anyone can explain reasonably simply why the shape of the curve changes so dramatically as you work your way downstream from 'Richmond' Lock to Kew, Hammersmith etc etc etc etc? Also, what effect if any does this have on the stream, particularly where on the curve would you expect the strongest stream? (4 replies...)
Cat n Buns graphic by Atlantic Rowers - Wed 25th May 2005, 8:51am
Does anyone have a good graphic of the cat n buns as it looks on the flag (not on as stitched on kit). Presumably when the new flag was made someone must have had something for that? Any idea what the official colours are for the blue and gold? (1 replies...)

Novice Fairbairns Videos by Bryn - Tue 17th May 2005, 10:27pm
I know it's taken a while, but I've finally found out how to get some srcf user space and how to use it. Way back at the time of Novice Fairbairns I took some videos of all the crews and I've now added links to them on the results page. I hope all these links work!

If you want to see what your rowing was like a term ago you can have a look. I have to say that the videos aren't very good and that my newfound computer expertise (yes, that's right) doesn't extend to knowing a way of compressing them, so they're all around 10MB.

And just so that I can get extra practice with links, they're all here as well:

1st novice men's VIII
2nd novice men's VIII
3rd novice men's VIII
4th novice men's VIII

1st novice women's VIII
2nd novice women's VIII
3rd novice women's VIII

It's probably not worth it unless you have a fast connection (which I don't, so I haven't checked if any of this works...). (5 replies...)
Bumps pages by KSS - Fri 13th May 2005, 2:36pm
Is it at all possible to have the bumps pages play the Radio 1 'Top 40' tune on loop when people browse them? Or perhaps just when they are looking at the bumps tables? I think it would add a lot to the site. (2 replies...)
BUSA by Give us some competition!-jo - Tue 10th May 2005, 10:18pm
Hi everyone, was at BUSA last week competing in Novice (ARA novice) events and it struck me that your girls were way better than most of the crews we came up against, especially in the iv+ event. I was suprised that only a few crews from cambridge bothered entering (magdalene and CUW) especially since Durham entered a huuuuge amount of boats. How come so few college crews enter? Discuss. Book by AHLF - Sun 8th May 2005, 8:20pm

Where have all the photos gone? by Amelia - Wed 27th Apr 2005, 9:25pm
Lots of photos of happy smiling post-victory people have been taken this year. Not all of them have made it onto the message boards. Those of us without digital cameras of our own, and who have yet to pay Honey for JET prints, are starved of visual evidence of FaT dominance.

So all of you people out there with relevant boatie photos taking up space on your data sticks, please post them!!

Club money by just out of interest - Thu 14th Apr 2005, 1:14pm
Is it the whole comittee who decide what the moeny for the year's going to be spent on, or the overall captain/both captains?
Only because it occurs to me we are quite in need of some new boathouse equipment, ergs [of which 3 of which have some kind of fault/weirdness, four of which are pretty unusable] & sliders? And how about another [even secdon hand] scull [maybe one designed for slightly lighter people :)?] or just magpie being fixed. Oh, and some clams. They're approximately £2 each.. :)
And, further to a conversation I was having the other day, what about some women's croker blades? Also, wouldn't it be worth saving our money and investing in new men's/women's 8s [especially with the demise of bp3] rather than novice shells?
Hope this doesn't start too much of a fight, it is largely out of curiosity, just wondering what the thinking is behind our latest boat buying spree? (28 replies...)
The Committee by RTT - Fri 1st Apr 2005, 9:46am
Having read the forthcoming events info, I am amazed to discover that our Committee is organising nearly everything in the rowing world. Who would have thought that 1+3 ran the Head of the Nene? Or the Pembroke Regatta? Interestingly Guy appears to be kicking up his heels and leaving Simon Blackburn to organise the GoR again this year. What I want to know is, how do they manage? No wonder JW always seems to be awake into the small hours before early morning training!

Also, are they organising Henley this year, and if so
a) Will 1st Trinity get pre-qualified for the Grand as is traditional?
b) Can I get a Stewards pass? (8 replies...)
Boat Race times by Bryn - Mon 28th Mar 2005, 4:25pm
In the build-up to the race on ITV they said that the Boat Race was timed to take place when the stream was at its quickest. But the BBC website says that Goldie beat OUBC by 3s.

So at least one of these has messed up:
(i) ITV (for not knowing about tides)
(ii) the BBC (for not being able to time a boat race)
(iii) Robin Williams (for not being able to pick the fastest crew)
(iv) me (for missing something obvious)

Can someone in the know help me out? (2 replies...)
3rd Annual Pre-Boat Race Pub Crawl by mjb - Sat 26th Mar 2005, 10:31am
Sunday service on the trains, meant I arrived at Putney half an hour late, only to find out that the Duke's Head didn't open until 12 anyway.
The intrepid group of pub crawlers (Ingers, Graham, Bron, Sarah, me) contented themselves with watching some random boats do practice starts off stakeboats on the river next to us until the pub finally decided to open.
Lunch was taken at the Crabtree where Mr. Walker arrived for his habitual late start, followed by Anna and Tom.
A push along the Hammersmith bend saw us acquire various extra hangers-on, including Amelia, Catherine, Becca, Henners and Guy and we made it to Cygnet BC for the Blackburn Bonus Pint around 1730 before completing the course a little after 8pm. Back to Blackburn's for pizzas where Graham, perhaps realising he'd finished the pub crawl, promptly fell asleep.
Hopefully a fun time was had by all.

FaT Men for Headship by shocked by Caius - Thu 10th Mar 2005, 7:07pm
My Goodness! To help Lilie make up numbers (and finally resurrect my profile on the social scene) I went to formal with the Caius 1st Men last night. Most of them were decent folk, but their captain was pretty much the epitomy of arrogance and the recurring presentation of Headship medals unnecessary. (I apologise for failing the Mission Abduct Dave's Pride by the way.)

I suggest to whomever this may concern post Henley, to incorporate in the 1st Men's Lent training a formal swap with their Caius counterparts. There is so much to be said for a race rowed on pure hatred!
Plea for Pretty Photos by Rich/Dan - Thu 10th Mar 2005, 2:16pm
I'm looking for a photo or two of Cambridge rowing to put into a document that I'm writing. The criteria are:
- Must be taken by a club member (i.e. not Jet, so we can use it without copyright issues)
- Preferably showing people rowing well
- Preferably showing lots of crowds on the bank
- Preferably in summer

Can anybody help?

Separately, if anybody can find a photo thats shows off a company sponsoring one of the boat clubs (e.g. their name very obvious on a splashtop) then that would be fab too. (7 replies...)

ARA library by Simon - Fri 27th Aug 2004, 12:31am
The ARA has copies of old British Rowing Almanacks available for people to look at in Hammersmith. Some of the older ones (e.g. early 1900s) have detailed descriptions of races at Henley and on the Cam involving Trinity boats. If anyone in the club is keen enough to come and look through these and get information (e.g. for this website) then let me know and I shall try to arrange something.
strokesider (female) for S4 eight by Sarah - Mon 9th Aug 2004, 10:26am
Hello

I'm currently coaching and coxing the Mortlake intermediate squad. We are going to Stourport Regatta this weekend, but one of the girls is ill so won't be able to come.
the main problem is the eight - on saturday we have a straight final (non-qualifying) at 3.50pm
so is there ANYBODY out there that knows a female with less than 4 points who could help us out?
we could probably manage if you are a bowsider as we have someone who can swap.
Stourport is just south of Birmingham, we could probably pick up someone anywhere en route from SW london

please email me asap if you can help? (3 replies...)

Tomorrow and Saturday are our chances to make it up so get your arses out of bed and get stomping.
