| From Professor Tony Purnell's proposed 4h year engineering projects: "Aerodynamics is of second order importance to rowing as the boats move through the air quite slowly. Is this misguided? What is the average cross wind for a season's rowing in major events? Could the rowers, the rigs, the oars, the boats be improved (within the regulations) to lower the aerodynamic drag experienced?" | |

| My computer decided to install IE9 of its own accord last night. The FaT website now looks weird and won't display any images (other websites seem unaffected). | I suspect this issue has been tackled by many of us before, so I was hoping to gather suggestions and information into one place. The problem is simple to frame: What is the best and most practical way to take, process and display video of people rowing, assuming the camera is being used on a bike? I know that using a tandem can have very positive effects on the raw video, but even then there is lots of shaking involved. How can this be reduced at time of capture? What tools do you / have you used to process the footage? What file types lend themselves best to storing and playing footage of rowing? Please fire away with suggestions / further questions etc. and hopefully we'll gather a bit of a guide for anyone trying to video rowing in future. (4 replies...) | |

| Hi all, For anyone who would like to follow Pedro's progress in his Atlantic crossing, the website is www.onemillionstrokes.org.uk. After five days at sea the crew are coping well and making good progress of 60-70nm a day. The daily blog is updated usually around 7pm - although unfortunately for avid blob-watchers the satellite tracker only updates sporadically about twice a day. | Alastair Hignell was featured in Sports Personality of the Year this evening. For those who don't know, he was an excellent rugby commentator on FiveLive who retired this year. He has degenerative MS, and broadcast with it for eight years, without the illness being widely known by the general public. Anyway, they said on the show that he was the last person to captain both CUCC and CURFC. He still holds the Cambridge points record for a Varsity rugby march. He has scored a try for England and a century against the West Indies (the latter for his county side). Astonishing. PS Anyone want to write a "best radio commentator" poll? | |

To re-cap, a boat burning organised by Charles goes as follows: Boat is taken to Backs; Boat is Burned; ????; Profit. How the boat burning went for Pembroke: > Boat was thrown into the river to get it to the other side by swimming along with it. > Boat then carried to Pembroke > Boat then covered in Petrol (yes, Petrol) > Boat then lit with a lighter (yes, a lighter) by the W1 cox. > Boat explodes with a bang; cox gets badly burned; rower gets injured; everyone else falls over. > PCBC Dinner is a little bit unhappy. | Found on Wikipedia when trying to research dengue fever. I can think of several ways to describe East Anglia but "developed, tropical nation?" Don't think so One major difference, however, is that malaria is often eradicated in major cities, whereas dengue is often found in urban areas of developed tropical nations, including Singapore, Taiwan, Brazil & East Anglia | |

| Graham and I are renowned for being Far Too Competitive. We'll try to out-do each other on anything - pointless trivia, highest heart rate when training, whatever...
But there's nothing quite like a game of top trumps. Except we don't always have a set of cards to hand. Which is why we invented ARA-card trumps (only works if you're club secretary and have about 30 of the things). The most recent game is "Seen on the train to Waterloo trumps" where Graham has just matched my "my-friend-Laura-from-Selwyn's dad" with a "Kieran West". So what next? | One thing which I don't think gets said enough on this website is thank you to the webmaster. Currently Bryn, originally Martin, and with others along the way, they have built a website which remains the envy of other sports clubs both in Cambridge and beyond. Although the site looks the same, it's clear that the improvements both big (BumpIT) and small (changing code to generate Torpids rules bumps charts) are ongoing and also a lot of work. The fact that I can put in all these links as well just makes it more fun. Next week is busy and stressful for everyone, but thanks to their work this site has become a brilliant reference point for live information and an archive of what's gone before. Thanks guys! | I am delighted to announce that the first annual FaTBCFC vs BPBCFC football match will kick off at 2pm on Saturday 17 March, at the Cranmer Road pitch (near Selwyn). Special mention must also go to the 5th boats catches. Very photogenic! Sorry that not all crews are as well represented as the 5th VIII! Not only did they do more rowing than anyone else... but it is much much easier taking these in the early divisions with fewer bikes and people about. | |

I used to have an awesome gel-based cushion which I used sculling and made life much more comfortable, but I left it ATBH when many years ago and never saw it again. I'm as light as I've been for years right now, and I'm finding ergs an increasing struggle due to the pain in my @rse after 10mins sitting on the seat. | Does anyone know of (and can spot) any results from this term still missing? I've done a bit of a check through, added a few missing ones I noticed from the small boats regatta and tidied up a few loose ends. It's really great so many (almost all) results are getting put into this thing, but please try and get it done even when the races don't go as hoped. Also added the usual college archives (sorry these are so late) for the Head of the Cam and the Head 2 Head. | |

| The Varsity Football Match 2006 has been confirmed for April 2nd 2006, at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground at 1pm. That is three hours before the Boat Race starts on the river behind the ground. It should be a fantastic day in London for all Cambridge students, and the Football Club would appreciate your support. Tickets are £10 which gives you access to the newly re-developed Fulham village; a complex of bars, restaurants and cafes, match programme, Riverside Stand seating for the match and prime viewing space on the Riverside Terrace for the Goldie and Isis Race which is due to start at 4pm, and the 152nd University Boat Race, due to start at 4.35pm. | I was wondering if anyone knows of a reliable table comparing some kind of average boat speed/gold medal times, or anything really to give an idea of relative boat speeds across ALL the different classes. It's very hard to find any info on non-olympic classes, e.g coxed fours, and how they compare, speed wise to other boats. And/or can people offer opinions on this? | In addition to the controversial new TV forecasts, the BBC seem to have made some quite positive changes to their weather website, including tide tables. Not being a regular on the tideway, I don't know whether this is well known and understood, but I wonder if anyone can explain reasonably simply why the shape of the curve changes so dramatically as you work your way downstream from 'Richmond' Lock to Kew, Hammersmith etc etc etc etc? Also, what effect if any does this have on the stream, particularly where on the curve would you expect the strongest stream? (4 replies...) | |

| I know it's taken a while, but I've finally found out how to get some srcf user space and how to use it. Way back at the time of Novice Fairbairns I took some videos of all the crews and I've now added links to them on the results page. I hope all these links work! If you want to see what your rowing was like a term ago you can have a look. I have to say that the videos aren't very good and that my newfound computer expertise (yes, that's right) doesn't extend to knowing a way of compressing them, so they're all around 10MB. | Hi everyone, was at BUSA last week competing in Novice (ARA novice) events and it struck me that your girls were way better than most of the crews we came up against, especially in the iv+ event. I was suprised that only a few crews from cambridge bothered entering (magdalene and CUW) especially since Durham entered a huuuuge amount of boats. How come so few college crews enter? Discuss. | Is it the whole comittee who decide what the moeny for the year's going to be spent on, or the overall captain/both captains? Only because it occurs to me we are quite in need of some new boathouse equipment, ergs [of which 3 of which have some kind of fault/weirdness, four of which are pretty unusable] & sliders? And how about another [even secdon hand] scull [maybe one designed for slightly lighter people :)?] or just magpie being fixed. Oh, and some clams. They're approximately £2 each.. :) And, further to a conversation I was having the other day, what about some women's croker blades? Also, wouldn't it be worth saving our money and investing in new men's/women's 8s [especially with the demise of bp3] rather than novice shells? Hope this doesn't start too much of a fight, it is largely out of curiosity, just wondering what the thinking is behind our latest boat buying spree? (28 replies...) | |

| Having read the forthcoming events info, I am amazed to discover that our Committee is organising nearly everything in the rowing world. Who would have thought that 1+3 ran the Head of the Nene? Or the Pembroke Regatta? Interestingly Guy appears to be kicking up his heels and leaving Simon Blackburn to organise the GoR again this year. What I want to know is, how do they manage? No wonder JW always seems to be awake into the small hours before early morning training!
Also, are they organising Henley this year, and if so a) Will 1st Trinity get pre-qualified for the Grand as is traditional? b) Can I get a Stewards pass? (8 replies...) | |

| In the build-up to the race on ITV they said that the Boat Race was timed to take place when the stream was at its quickest. But the BBC website says that Goldie beat OUBC by 3s. So at least one of these has messed up: (i) ITV (for not knowing about tides) (ii) the BBC (for not being able to time a boat race) (iii) Robin Williams (for not being able to pick the fastest crew) (iv) me (for missing something obvious) Can someone in the know help me out? | Sunday service on the trains, meant I arrived at Putney half an hour late, only to find out that the Duke's Head didn't open until 12 anyway. The intrepid group of pub crawlers (Ingers, Graham, Bron, Sarah, me) contented themselves with watching some random boats do practice starts off stakeboats on the river next to us until the pub finally decided to open. Lunch was taken at the Crabtree where Mr. Walker arrived for his habitual late start, followed by Anna and Tom. A push along the Hammersmith bend saw us acquire various extra hangers-on, including Amelia, Catherine, Becca, Henners and Guy and we made it to Cygnet BC for the Blackburn Bonus Pint around 1730 before completing the course a little after 8pm. Back to Blackburn's for pizzas where Graham, perhaps realising he'd finished the pub crawl, promptly fell asleep. Hopefully a fun time was had by all. | |

| My Goodness! To help Lilie make up numbers (and finally resurrect my profile on the social scene) I went to formal with the Caius 1st Men last night. Most of them were decent folk, but their captain was pretty much the epitomy of arrogance and the recurring presentation of Headship medals unnecessary. (I apologise for failing the Mission Abduct Dave's Pride by the way.) I suggest to whomever this may concern post Henley, to incorporate in the 1st Men's Lent training a formal swap with their Caius counterparts. There is so much to be said for a race rowed on pure hatred! | |

The criteria are: - Must be taken by a club member (i.e. not Jet, so we can use it without copyright issues) - Preferably showing people rowing well - Preferably showing lots of crowds on the bank - Preferably in summer Can anybody help? | The ARA has copies of old British Rowing Almanacks available for people to look at in Hammersmith. Some of the older ones (e.g. early 1900s) have detailed descriptions of races at Henley and on the Cam involving Trinity boats.
