Trumps by Simon - Mon 26th Nov 2001, 12:23pm
Graham and I are renowned for being Far Too Competitive. We'll try to out-do each other on anything - pointless trivia, highest heart rate when training, whatever...

But there's nothing quite like a game of top trumps. Except we don't always have a set of cards to hand. Which is why we invented ARA-card trumps (only works if you're club secretary and have about 30 of the things).

The most recent game is "Seen on the train to Waterloo trumps" where Graham has just matched my "my-friend-Laura-from-Selwyn's dad" with a "Kieran West".

So what next? Well that's what this thread is for: to let you know what we're trumping with next, and to share your experience of stupid games of one-upmanship...

Of course, the classic "trumps" game is Food Top Trumps (play using nutritional info per 100g), which led to the more specific Pringles Top Trumps and hence the discovery of everyday antimatter applications.

Rolling stock trumps: seen on the 'other' bridge at East Putney, a SWT train headed North towards Wandsworth Town on the district Line.
Beat that, Fisher!

They do that all the time. You're just bitter after I spotted Tim Foster and someone who may or may not have been Robin Smith at Waterloo.

(Bonus points for TF's purple suit)

It was not Robin Smith... Robin Sith isn't that tall, and this man was buying a burger, not playing a cover drive.

General trump news: type 'Varsity match' into Google and the first five sites to be listed are Cambridge.

Is this Robin you speak of a Dark Lord of the Sith?

I know it doesn't trump Fossie, but on the 18:17 to Shepperton on Friday there was someone with the theme from 'MacGyver' as their ring tone.

Back to trumping (!)
On the drain yesterday evening, the guy at Henley in the battered old reddish blazer, with a huge handlebar moustache, of whom Borat asks "Do you make it with ze boys?"

If we're to allow spotting elsewhere than the Waterloo-Putney line, I'll happily take the points for Bill Clinton (spotted in the Burlington Arcade off Piccadilly while Christmas shopping).

Hopefully, by posting this submission, I'll be trumping Graham on the posting chart on the topics page.

Yes, it seems you do currently have a slight lead.

Observation: of the 6 most prolific users of the message board (see graph at the bottom of the topics list), none are rowing for college this term. Is this a good sign? Perhaps everyone is too busy training for the Lents?

Or maybe it just shows that the people listed have nothing better to do during their days, and anything with anything resembling a life could never compete

Why am I the only one to have a middle initial listed on that little graph thing? I know that Simon has a middle initial and Rich and Chris have two each... Am I not the only MG posting on this thing?

Greetings, Mr Goodson. It is because your name on this thing is 'M.J.Goodson', whereas most people just have, for example, 'Graham Fisher'.
This originally came from how you are registered on hermes; you can change it on your personal info page.

Any chance of seeing posting stats for those actually rowing for FaT as well ?

I have added a new chart especially for you, mjb. Mind you, you have probably found it already ;-)

Back to trumps!
Spotted by platform 19 at Waterloo: Cass Chideock. Who I think at least matches your Tim Foster, and possibly trumps him.

I didn't see Cass Chideock...

There's been a long silence on this board, but finally some star-spotting action: Garry Herbert (BBC rowing commentator) got on my train at Wandsworth this morning, and then went off towards the taxi rank at Waterloo.
by Motty - Tue 20th Aug 2002, 9:32am
Slightly tangential perhaps, but whilst watching the football this weekend I noticed that both Aston Villa manager Graham Taylor and Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier were sporting what appeared to be Hawks Club ties. Can anybody explain?

A little investigation reveals a picture of Gerard Houllier at Sunday's game against Villa wearing a maroon and white striped tie. For reference, here is a picture of a maroon and gold Hawks' Club tie. Graham Taylor's tie, on the other hand might be a bit closer, but the only picture I could find is not particularly clear.

Spotter's Badge for Mr. Talbott? Maybe...

Saw him again this morning, getting on at Barnes Bridge and heading into Waterloo. Beautiful morning and stupid train company has turned the heating up(!) on the trains at the moment yet he was still wearing a long raincoat...

I saw Ben Hunt-Davies (Gold Olympian, Men's VIII, Sydney 2000) on the 209 this morning and was reminded of this thread.
I also just found this thread, which can probably be updated with some exploits since 2002.
