New web site features by Martin - Thu 20th Sep 2001, 11:05am
What do you think of the new stuff on the website? What improvements would you suggest?
I am really keen to hear what people think of the new message board / news stuff on the website - particularly if there are things which you think don't really work.

The one feature I have still to add is the option of including pictures in posts. Is there anything else you want to see or that needs changing?

Yes. All initial Club News items should be automatically cc'd to soc-rowing-trinity.

I have made one or two small changes to this lot - with the aim of making finding new stuff a bit easier.
Firstly, the theads in a topic are now shown with the most recently updated at the top - most obvious when you first go in to this, the "General Discussion" topic. If you want to view threads in the order in which they were created like before, simply click SORT BY FIRST POST.
Secondly the 'Show all posts' option is a bit clearer than before. (Remember that if you click this, the newest stuff is at the bottom rather than the top.)

I am hoping to add icons telling you how many new posts there have been since your last visit some time in the near future...

I have just improved the search facility for when searching for people's names - it was including every single member's info page due to the find member list at the top, but this has now been fixed.
Next couple of things in the queue are minutes from December's Justice meeting and a copy of the Annual Record. Oh, and some pictures ;-)

I have fixed a minor problem with the site's style sheet for all users of Internet Explorer v.6.
Of the other minor things altered this week, most pointless is the addition to the Members -> ICQ page of current ICQ status indicators.

Did you know that "service revolvers" were once used to give the 1 then 2 then 3 series of signals in the bumps? (Ok, so I still don't really believe it, but am assured by Crawford who has heard this from countless veterans of the Cambridge Rowing scene - Peter Brandt, and others.)
Or that Mark himself invented the Yellow Flag?

Needless to say, if you browse the ever expanding First and Third web site, you do now....

Blimey o'Reilly, it's quiet around here these days.....

Have reorganised slightly where general stuff about the river is found - it is now under 'General Info', including the piece I did about the catchment area, directions to the boathouse and an Ordnance Survey map covering between college and Baits Bite Lock.

Rich has sent me 3 more films of pictures from the Lents; those and results from the weekend will be posted at some in the next week when I can find the time.

As suggested, the "Peter Brandt" section of the Club Greatest Disasters page has been expanded to include every one of its major mishaps!

Right. I do need people to let me know if they find anything not working at this point.
I have uploaded quite a few new bits and pieces - including significant changes to the now renamed Members Database. There is a good chance that something I haven't spotted is now broken - help please.

Also any feedback on interface (as it stands so far...) to adding results on-line would be appreciated.

Yet more new stuff.

Have finally set up the full set of results reporting pages - the result of an on(/off)-going project for the last 6 months. The May Bumps used them, but they can now be used for all events.

The system is reasonably user friendly - as verified by Sally who has added Women's Henley to the site, including the main results page description. Members may add events (races for results and pictures, as well as social events for pictures only) by going to 'Website -> Manage Events', although I envisage it will mainly be the webmaster or committee members doing this. Results for races can subsequently be added in the Results section, and a brief account of the ladies' row at Women's Henley may now be found there.

Unfortunately the crew lists part of it isn't quite finished (which will be one of the best bits!), and hopefully the photo gallery will also be tied in to it, but it will be JPD who will be doing most of this work (according to his manifesto!). Obviously the archive of results for the last two years will be brought over in to the new system, but this will probably take a little while to happen - not being an entirely trivial problem when crew lists are considered too.

This new stuff all uses the boatclub's computer's database and php, rather than xml format files, to store the information. The changes will not only make the website much easier to update (as being seen now) but much easier to search for previous results or, for example, details of people's rowing careers.

Never miss anything ever again. There is now a list of posts & race reports ordered by date - available via a link at the bottom of the front page. Any comments of the usefulness of this (or not) welcome.

Coming soon, an 'Old web site features' feature, in which I will spend peaceful days reminiscing about the old New features of times past...
by Martin - Tue 12th Nov 2002, 9:16am
I should like to own up to the fact that the lack of crew lists this term is my fault - the necessary software to allow jpd to do these will be on its way to him shortly.
by Martin - Tue 28th Jan 2003, 4:02pm
The new results section seems to be working ok on the whole; am pleased everyone seems to like it.
fyi have just cleared up a few small bugs - particularly in the crew / time comparisions view. It now remembers where you are properly when following the links off that page.

The disasters page has also been expanded with Rich's account of the HORR in 1999.

I have finally got round to scanning the newspaper articles I kept from the 2000 Lent Bumps. I have put these on a page together and linked them into the results section... Head to the new (and currently brief) Features page.
by Martin - Tue 4th Feb 2003, 6:29pm
For others with a vague interest in the recent history of the club - some Times reports of the Mays in the mid '60s (we were Head '64 - '67): follow the link from the bottom of the Bumps intro
by Martin - Wed 5th Feb 2003, 3:14pm
Final set of Newspaper clippings... Lents '98. Again, on the results' features page.
by Martin - Thu 6th Feb 2003, 3:47pm
See the 4th May VIII's spoons in the Introduction to the bumps. Thanks to Keith N-N and Andrew Smith.
by Martin - Sun 9th Feb 2003, 5:17pm
Tested by a few willing volunteers yesterday, hopefully there aren't too many more errors in the algorithm; bumps summaries have been added beneath individuals' full results summary - e.g. click a senior oarsman's name from the crews page and scroll to the bottom.

Can we have an option to sort the quotes page by the person being quoted?
by dw229 - Wed 29th Oct 2003, 6:48pm
Good idea. i.e. a picklist of club members for submitted quotes.

That could make these quotes still mean something to people after more than a week...

And while we're at it, can we have an online incest chart which people can add to anonymously? :)
by Dubya - Wed 29th Oct 2003, 7:02pm
i think Simon's right, it should be by person quoted rather than the person that submitted the quote (since the latter is best kept secret)... but even so it's hard to search. Perhaps existing quotes should be categorized and then we should be able to search by category (eg, formal hall antics, gay ingram references, etc)
by Dubya - Wed 29th Oct 2003, 7:02pm
and as re the increst chart, i think martin had mostly done this feature but then sadly didnt make it public!

Dubya said: and as re the increst chart, i think martin had mostly done this feature but then sadly didnt make it public!
It would require some sort of verification... maybe three independent witnesses all have to submit something for it to appear, but this is over-ridden if the Keeper of the Chart submits something in which case it goes up automatically.
Can I be taken off it yet?
by Dubya - Wed 29th Oct 2003, 11:29pm
I think the new agreement is that you get taken off once you are no longer linked to anyone who is currently in residence. Which leaves you included now and for at least another couple of years, Simon!
by Simon - Thu 30th Oct 2003, 9:57am
Oh, and can we change the front page so that "latest news and features" doesn't date back to June and/or doesn't include times of meetings that were a few weeks ago. Makes it look like we're not doing much right now.
by dw229 - Thu 30th Oct 2003, 10:16am
For the incest chart the 3 nominees method might be a bit cumbersome. Why not instead allow anyone to add links, but only the webmaster the power to delete them?

Then, the information can be displayed in the usual "blank circle" style...and everyone can have a new integer digit added to their FaT results history. :)

As for the quotes page, I agree with JWE.

P.S. I think we're better off getting Martin to do this. Iain seems a bit preoccupied at the moment

I agree, but all this needs is regular news items about what is happening. I don't think the site itself wants changing particularly.

On the other hand, it might help if 'news' items could be better connected to the results - so it would feel more natural to post an overview to 'news' when the results page was complete. I have been thinking a bit about this.

The suggestions about quotes sounds reasonable. Not quite ideal that if somebody quotes me it would add itself to my number of posts, but maybe not a huge problem. Also not clear what to do about anonymous quotes - maybe scrapped completely?

I'll try to make time for these quotes and news things - think Iain might struggle with them at the moment, despite his amazing progress in mastering everything!

Yes, I did do an incest chart thing - which was working fine but started to go wrong when the number of links increased. JWE found some software to draw the chart, but it couldn't cope with the complexity of the interconnections when it grew. Getting it working would need a more reliable chart drawing program to be found and the system reconfigured to use it. If anyone thinks they have time to try and find something suitable, I can help by dumping the list of links we currently have on the database in an appropriate format to see if it will work.

But I regretfully concede that my days of spending weeks on end programming this thing are finally drawing to a close.... I myself am increasingly preoccupied - with the stress of trying to support oneself, house hunting, and other such trivia :-(

Bah, the real world. Pain in the arse isn't it?
