28th Mar '07Website downtimeby mcp
Just to let people know that we might be taking the site down for a few hours tonight to do some maintenance. May not be necessary, not sure yet.

Something (as yet unknown) is causing the site to run a bit slowly - due to the web server getting stuck trying to respond to a number of requests and thus gobbling up all available memory and CPU etc.

Have just updated the server software to spangly new versions... if anyone spots anything that is broken (this is possible), please tell Bryn! ;-)

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to have fixed the issue... Sorry about that. It appears that every now and then a googlebot comes across a PHP script that gets stuck, so we're in the process of trying to find out why it does.

It runs smoothly each time we restart it, but I'm afraid that each time it stalls the whole thing will slow down again.

The bug is now fixed: an error in the results for May Bumps 1990 highlighted an otherwise undetected flaw in my Michell Cup points script.

So if the website starts running slowly again, let me know!

Martin and I are going to have a look at updating as much of the outdated software on the server as possible over the next couple of hours, so the website will be a bit up and down.

Most disruption should be over now. Sorry for any inconvenience. It was supposed to only be 2 hours but we messed up.

Some functionality might be broken due to new software running the site. If you find anything that doesn't work as it should please email Bryn!

Not sure whether Bryn's about... but in his absence I can explain that the downtime this morning was because the server's 'main' hard drive was full. Sorry!

... and incase anyone's interested... this is not actually due to our 7500 pictures! We have two hard drives, the website itself is on a fairly new 40GB hard disk and that's fine. It's the 'primary' hard disk, containing the operating system, server software and suchlike, which is a 4GB disk from years ago and is suffering....

The brief downtime then was nothing to worry about - I was moving the server to its summer residence.

And again... Quite confusing, as Martin seemed to have fixed this problem last time round. I am unfortunately stranded away from home without any software other than Internet Explorer, so thanks to Martin for sorting this one out again.
