What Am I Like?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/huma...from Idealist, Fri 3rd Sep, 11:22am
A similar thing was previously discussed here, but as it was on TV last night, I thought it might be fun to revisit.

Answer a few questions and find out which of 16 personality types you fit into, based on whether you are Introvert/Extrovert, Ideas/Facts, Heart/Head, Planner/Spontaneous. Is there a typical rower type?

For the record, I am an Idealist (Introvert, Ideas, Heart, Spontaneous).

Ditto - Introvert, Ideas, Heart, Spontaneous

On an unrelated note, as the website is getting quite old now, could we have the year put next to the posting date/time?
by Dubya - Fri 3rd Sep 2004, 12:00pm
Introvert, Facts, Heads, Spontaneous. Resolver apparently.

I agree, having the date on posts would be useful!

Most posts include the year if they are over a year old. Web Links are one of the exceptions at the moment - I'll fix it.

Rather amusingly I am karma whoring simply by posting this link to an explanation of karma whoring.....

Also, some more information on /. trolling.

Oh my god, I'm Dubya. Aaaaaargh!

Actually there was one section where I couldn't make my mind up about a couple of choices and the different options actually affected whether I am a Facts or Ideas person. As such I could be a Strategist (Spontaneous, Ideas, Heads, Introvert) instead of a Resolver. Either way I guess that I'm supposed to be solving things. On Myers-Briggs I am resoundingly an INTP (as is GF, JPD and JMG I note).

Given that I commence my teaching career in 3 days, it is interesting to note that Resolver is the direct opposite of Mentor...
by Ingers - Fri 3rd Sep 2004, 3:04pm
JMG's link to the INTP page perfectly sums me up whereas I don't think any of the BBC's types are me. So if you feel unhappy with your BBC-type, try doing the full Myers-Briggs thing. How many more boatie INTPs are there?

It doesn't seem to mention homosexuality....?

I am right on the borderline between INTJ and INTP on the Jung scale, I think
by Simon - Fri 3rd Sep 2004, 6:41pm
I am INTJ (the least common type!) - but if you want to go further there is a step 2 which splits each of the four pairs into 5 pairs each (so instead of 16 possible solutions there are 400!).

It is interesting how many N type people there are (probably more a Cambridge thing than a rowing thing) as this is a minority in general populations.

INTP

Hmmm...this is looking slightly odd.

Can we organise Myers-Briggs tests for novices this year? This could turn out to be an effective tool for crew selections.

Has anyone seen that the boathouse is now cream coloured?

Were you envisaging using the results to put people in particular seats, or assembling entire crews with the same result, keeping them together longish-term?

Yes, I think it looks very odd. Would have been much better white.

No, just anyone who's not INTP or INTJ clearly does not belong in the boat club and should be sent home!
by dw229 - Wed 8th Sep 2004, 9:50am
Have any coxes done the personality test?
by sarah - Wed 8th Sep 2004, 12:46pm
apart from the fact that it's a well disputed fact that 'I'm a rower not a cox' I came out as a supervisor...
by Dan - Wed 8th Sep 2004, 12:53pm
I originally thought that the cream thing looked awful too. but have grown used to it over the last month or so. I think ultimately it might not be too bad. Im not quite sure why they decided to go with cream though! You would think that they would have consulted someone about it before hand.

Dark blue all over would have been good :)

I'm a Nurturer - Planner, Facts, Hearts, Introvert.

"Under extreme stress, Nurturers may become preoccupied with the worst possible outcome and believe that they are heading for disaster."
by Anna - Wed 8th Sep 2004, 4:28pm
I, apparently, am a go-getter. What it is I go and get, however, is open to question.

Not how I would have thought of myself though. Will try again when feeling more heartfelt and introverted.
by Erica - Fri 10th Sep 2004, 10:13am
Realist (Introvert, Facts, Head, Planner)

Also INTJ, and I think the description for that fits me better than the BBC one.

I think it would be really interesting to see whether you can use a Myers-Briggs test as a good predictor of whetehr someone would still be rowing at, say, 2nd boat level or above in a year's time - certainly it might be a way to identify people who have the right temperement for rowing but not necessarily obvious ability straight away, the sort of person who starts in the 3rd novice eight and ends up trialling lightweight two years later!?
by dw229 - Fri 10th Sep 2004, 11:25am
You could just hand them out at the novice rowing meetings...no need to tell them why, other than that you're doing an experiment...
by Dubya - Fri 10th Sep 2004, 11:44am
Perhaps someone in experimental psychology would like to write a paper about it. They could offer us 5 pounds for each person that responds to the survey, which we could use directly to subsidise kit ;)
