BBC to axe Boat Race coverage
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/o...from jmg, Mon 23rd Feb, 4:57pm
The BBC is going to stop televising the boat race after this year. Clearly this is going to mean a lot less sponsorship money, and probably a resulting drop in standard. Is this going to be good / bad for Cambridge rowing? Discuss :)

From the BBC, yes. From other commercial sources, no. I think part of the point is that they want to get more sponsors and things, and this is incompatible with the non-advertising policy of the BBC. Having said that, IANAL and I could easily be wrong!

OK the article has now been fleshed out a little more; apparently ITV will be doing it, so not much is changing at all (as long as Davina McCall stays away).

NB this is my personal view:
I would imagine that ITV will put less pressure on the Boat Race to race at stupid times like Sunday 6pm to avoid clashes with the Grand National and the 6 Nations. ITV Sport also has a lot of money at the moment (having lost the Premiership) and, let's face it, has wide open spaces on a Saturday afternoon to give the boat race a 3 hour extravaganza programme. Might even get Goldie-Isis on live.
And anyone's got to be better than Steve Ryder and his inapproriate questions (e.g. "So you were winning with 400m to go, and have just come fourth [in the Olympic final, in the pair, when until Foster got better you were in the 4- that's about to win gold]. How do you feel?"). Hopefully we'll get Des - just like Grandstand all those years ago.
