Snapple Factoids

A few disclaimers.....

* rawd2 sent me this link - I didn't find it myself.
* Of the 38 wrong answers I gave, 36 were after a 5-pint liquid lunch, so I can kid myself than I'm not such a dolt after all.
* Many of the answers rely on making very American-centric assumptions; a few rely on pedantically precise interpretation of the wording; quite a lot rely on pretty loose interpretation of the wording.
* Every answer could be looked up and there's no time-out (that I found - I did leave it over lunch, after all), so you could just look stuff up and get 100% but that would be pretty sad.
* Nonetheless, it's good fun.

Not finished yet, but there are some very dodgy facts in there. Like "Alaska is both the most western and most eastern state". What the hell does that mean? And as for "Duck's quacks don't echo", that's just plain bullshit. This complaint is of course a preemptive disclaimer for performing worse than an inebriated Fisher...

201 out of 229. Apparently my genius level is Cro-Magnon, which doesn't seem quite right...

Given that the Aleutian Islands are tehnically part of Alaska and that the easternmost ones cross the 180 degree longitude line, then Alaska is indeed the most eastern and western state

Or perhaps Alaskans all wear kimonos and stetsons?

Still not convinced. The concept of an absolute easternmost (as opposed to most northerly or southerly) point is somewhat spurious, given that you can keep going east or west forever and that anywhere is both east of and west of anywhere else. Harrumph.

Well, when I went over there, they were adamant it was not only the westestmost and eastestmost and also northestmost of the USA.

is it true that alaska is larger than the rest of the US (land mass) put together?

(my geography teacher told me that, but then he was sacked for misconduct and didn't notice when we hid in the cupboard all lesson....)

It is of course the largest state, but to get from that to the teacher's claim require some significant confusion.

It's wider from west to east than the main bit of the USA.

State widths are dull. State mottos, however, are fantastic, including such gems as...
"By and by"
"It grows as it goes"
"If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you"
"Thus always to tyrants"
"He who transplanted still sustains"

I like Maryland's: "Manly deeds, womanly words". Makes you wonder exactly what deeds and what words they have in mind...

That's Virginia I think, but the English doesn't do it justice. It's actually sic semper tyrannis, a much more inspiring motto

is the national motto something like..."ummm pie"?
by Dubya - Thu 6th Nov 2003, 4:52pm
