Bumps fines
http://www.firstandthird.org/xls/...from gf, Mon 11th Mar, 4:00pm
Inspired by the recent achievement of a week's racing without any penalties, this spreadsheet takes a look at the fines handed out by CUCBC over the last ten sets of bumps (Mays 97 - Lents 02 inclusive).

At just 5.17quid [Martin - why does this message board reject the pound symbol?] for each of our 88 crews, 1st & 3rd are one of the best-behaved clubs on the river. True to form, Downing are 33rd out of 34.

A few notes:

1) Due to limited data, the fines for Lents 98 cannot currently be attributed to particular crews within a club, and hence are shown here spread evenly across the days and with a gender split in proportion to the number of crews racing within that club.

2) Where a fine is payable by a club rather than a crew (e.g. failure to provide marshal), it has been split by gender according to number of crews.

3) Amazingly, our 58 May crews have never been fined on a Wednesday.

I'm guessing that Emma are set to rise in the table over the next few years, since a certain long standing member has finally left....

Alarmingly, we only just lay claim to being the biggest club on the river. The LBCs need to pull out all the stops next term to make sure that we don't get overhauled.

Interesting to see that women are better behaved...

On the same point, our average probably shows a distinct improvement from Mays '98 owing to the departure of a certain thunderous Antipodean (PB of 3 fines in 30 seconds)

One of the biggest anomalies occurs with Magdalene - how come they are so well behaved in Lents and not in Mays?

Well, I managed to fine them GBP100 in Mays 1999 when their crew was overtaken (ie. bumped), but refused to acknowledge this as no contact had been made. I was shouting at them to stop, so their bank party started to have a go at me for not knowing the rules (by this point there was clear water). They were fined GBP50 for failure to easy and GBP50 for abuse of DU!

How come Clare Hall got a tenner in cashback and made money on the Lents?

Oh arse. Is there really no way to allow pound signs on these boards? Anyway, the gist of my message was that in Mays 98, there were plenty of credits as well as loads of fines (CUCBC made over three grand in total). Clare Hall women got a fifteen pound credit for sensible early acknowledgment or suchlike on the Friday, then the same again on the Saturday.

On a similar theme, I remember as a DU getting one of our women's crews credited for quick clearing in Mays 99, the day after they had been fined for failure to clear. Ra ra 1st & 3rd.

As a representative of the Bank of England, may I assure you that £s have always worked.

Chris
If I recall, during Lents 97 (when I was on the bank) we racked up some decent fines, not least due to the big Ozzie. Starting in Mays 97 does work to our advantage I suspect.

Someone should send that .xls to Downing's senior treasurer. Wasting that amount of money is madness.

I'm sure Nigel was still racking up the fines in 97, but I believe his legendary megaphone incident was in 96. Agreed, though, that starting in Mays 97 helps either way - it wasn't deliberate, just a reflection of the available data.

There is more data available if you look carefully at https://jwe21.trin.cam.ac.uk/cucbc_local

Cool. Will look at expanding the scope of the survey.

I just thought that I'd explain this for those members of the boatclub too young to even have heard such stories regaled:
Shouting at an Umpire is never recomended; even less so at the top of your lungs. The Umpire in question being about a foot and a half away makes it still less recomended. Pointing your megaphone at his head as well could not be too beneficial for the his hearing, and lead to stonking fines....

I still think it doesn't equal the Downing fine for "attacking a member of the bank party behind with a bike"

... nor indeed Addies' "crew showing dangerous incompetence".
