10th Nov '03Intra-FaT Erg Challengeby ccsi
4 Teams comprising the Light IV, 1st IV, 2nd IV and four from this year's novices will race in a format similar to Queen's Ergo competition.

Each team is to complete 8 * 500m so each competitor must race twice.

I reckon it will be bloody close... (9 replies...)
6th Nov '03Uni IVsby djh
The second coxed IV took out the second division of Uni IVs in some style this afternoon. The winning margin was approximately 14.5s. It looked a very comfortable and relaxed row with a good push for the line, but they were never really stretched and always looked in command. A good and well deserved result for a good crew. 5th Nov '03Queens' Ergsby IPE
Congratulations to the novices taking part in Queens' ergs, and due credit to the lbcs. The novice women produced a dominant display from start to finish to win the event, just reward for their hard work this term.

More details to follow shortly in the Results section.
4th Nov '03University IVsby mcp
The club's men's IVs have suffered disappointment this afternoon, with the 1st (coxless), 2nd and 4th IVs all losing to their opponents in the University IVs.

More details are sure to follow under Results in due course. The women's IV was knocked out yesterday, but the men's 3rd IV remain strong contenders in the lower coxed IVs event and will race tomorrow at about 2.50pm.

Meanwhile, there is happier news from Queens' - the news is that the 1st novice women's squad have beaten all the other crews in their heat by a clear 24 seconds... fingers crossed for the final! It's due to run at 10pm.

17th Jun '03May Term roundupby AHLF
First and Third was able to enter 7 men's and 3 women's crews into the May Bumps this year. Only Jesus managed as many and 8 of their 10 boats won spoons.

For the first time in a number of years, First and Third entered a Fellows' boat which rowed as the Men's 7th May VIII. On the first day they did not perform to the standards they had in training and were caught fairly swiftly by Peterhouse III. On the second day they were determined to make amends and they had a much better row. Unfortunately they were bumped again, this time by Emmanuel V but credit must go to them for a fine performance. On the final two days they rowed over comfortably ahead of St. Edmund's III and on Saturday they came well within a canvas of St. Catharine's V. It is wonderful to have Fellows' rowing for the Club. I hope they enjoyed it sufficiently to return next year.

The Grad VIII entered as the Men's 6th May VIII. They have worked hard, training together during the year, and their success was richly deserved. They bumped St. Catharine's IV, Caius V, Jesus V and Trinity Hall IV. I am delighted to award them their College blades.

The Men's 5th May VIII had a rather odd week. Starting immediately behind a Corpus III boat which did not turn up, they rowed past the station ahead to bump on the first day. On the second day, following an identical bump behind them, they were overbumped by LMBC V. The third day saw them chasing an absent Corpus III again whom they bumped for the second time. Sadly on the fourth day Corpus finally produced a very swift third boat and it bumped us back.

On the first day, after an encounter with Grassy corner, the Men's 4th May VIII were bumped by Trinity Hall III. They were subsequently bumped by Darwin II and overbumped by Christ's III. However, on the final day they salvaged their pride by rowing home comfortably ahead of Queen's III.

The Women's 3rd May VIII were formed only a few days before the GoR. Containing a number of Lent and May colours, great things were expected of them. They did not disappoint, making short work of Christ's II, Clare III, King's II and St. Edmund's. Despite the quality of the crew, bumping on all four days is still an achievement which the Club should applaud so I am very pleased to award them their College blades.

The Men's 3rd May VIII did well on the first day to escape from a strong Fitzwillilliam II who were desperately chasing the overbump. A pile-up on the second day saw a re-row with us being chased by a fast Magdalene II. Unfortunately they were too strong and we were bumped by the Plough. However, great credit must go to the crew for not giving up on the bumps. On Friday, they were again being chased by Fitz II and put in an awesome row to stay clear. On the final day they were rewarded with a bump on Downing III.

The Women's 2nd May VIII though very committed, were physically smaller than those around them so they were always going to have a difficult week. Their perfomances improved throughout the week, and although they were bumped by Darwin II, C lare Hall and Addenbroke's they showed great strength of character to row over on the fourth day despite four's seat getting stuck.

The 2nd May VIII started very high up thanks to a very fast crew last year. Defending the position was alwas going to be a challenge. On the first day, despite holding Emmanuel II to within a canvas from Grassy to the Railway bridge, they were unable to convert their advantage and were bumped by Peterhouse just before Morley's Holt. However, of all the performances I saw during the week, the row by this crew on Thursday was the best of them all. Wolfson were right on top of them halfway through Plough Reach. They were absolutely relentless and by the Railway bridge their bowball was level with our 7-man. However, thanks to some great pushes, a good line, and less than perfect coxing by the Wolfson boat we escaped. On Friday they were again chasing Emma II. They knew that this time there could be no mistake. Chased by LMBC II it was always going to be tough. Maggie closed quickly and were well inside a canvas coming into Grassy. However the Maggie cox steered for the bump too early. A great push in Plough Reach accompanied by the shouts from the massed FaT supporters in the Plough saw us take down Emma just before Ditton. On Saturday they put together another good row and Sidney Sussex were bumped on Grassy. This crew had worked very hard and was very committed and it richly deserved its rise up the table.

The Women's 1st May VIII were unlucky to be forced into a last minute substitution with Anna having to pull out through injury. However Sally kindly agreed to sub in and the crew rowed over on the first day. On the second day the crew put in a gutsy row and did well to hold off Darwin for so long. However, they finally succumbed by the Pink House. A row-over on Friday allowed us to chase CCAT on the final day whom we bumped just after Grassy.

I was a little worried about the May VIII at the start of term after losing 5 of the oarsmen in the Lent VIII. However, the return of two lightweight half-blues and one Granta colour combined with some hard training meant that we were ready to hold our own. However, whether we would be fast enough to bump was much less certain. Starting the on the first day behind a stacked St. Catharine's boat, we had little chance to bump. However the crew stayed comfortably ahead of Clare. Robinson held off Catz for just long enough to allow them to catch Jesus so we were chasing Catz again on the second day. Catz bumped Jesus, Queen's bumped Clare and on Thursday we were left to row over in glorious isolation at about 22. On the Friday we moved quickly on Jesus with Queen's never getting close. We got them just before Grassy. On the final day we were chasing Emmanuel. With 12 seconds to the gun Steph was horizontal on the stern canvas clinging on to the bung for dear life. However she kept us straight and another awesome row saw us hit Emma just after the railings. This is the first time the May VIII has gone up in 5 years - a fantastic achievement.

Congratulations to everyone on a great set of bumps. Many thanks to you all for such an enjoyable year. Best of luck to Dan and to next year's committee.

25th May '03Nines Regattaby jwe
Don't know all the results, but the 3rd men and 4th men each won their first round. Also the 2nd men won the plate after being DQ'd against Peterhouse for steering near the finish, having beaten them by a length. Amusingly Peterhouse went on to lose narrowly in the final, which makes our 2nd men the fastest M2 crew. Awesome work.
12th May '03Cam City Sprintsby mcp
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd men's VIIIs all won their categories at the City Rowing Club organised 500m sprint regatta on Sunday. The cream of the club's rowing talent also walked off with a leisurely win in the coxed IVs event.

Although the City Sprints is not the largest event of the term, the results reflect a good start to the term's training and bode well. Full details are to be found in the Results section - thank you to everyone for updating it.
23rd Apr '03Small Boats Regatta Winsby mjb
First and Third were well represented in this year's races.
Alex Summers won the Fairbairn Junior Sculls and the Bushe-Fox Freshman's Sculls, whilst in the Women's Pairs events the only entries came from First and Third; Sarah Cochrane and Aileen Dennis entered the Foster-Fairbairn Pairs and Sarah Taylor entered Magdelene Silver Pairs with Jess Evans of New Hall.
John Earl and Neil Talbott were unfortunately knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the men's Foster-Fairbairn Pairs by a Caius pair and Rebecca Palmer came second in the Women's Championship Sculls (Delafield Trophy). (12 replies...)
3rd Mar '03Lent Bumps round-upby AHLF
This term FaT were able to put out 5 men's VIIIs and 2 women's VIIIs.

The 5th Men's VIII and 2nd Women's VIII both put in very creditable performances in the Getting-on-Race, but sadly failed to qualify.

The 4th Men had a very good, though ultimately slightly annoying week. On the first day they bumped up from Head of the 4th division, after rowing over. They then bumped on their second and third days, leaving them on track for blades. They were closing down Sidney II ahead of them, but had a slight incident with the bank, and fell victim to the over-bump from Caius III. However, we are still one of only two clubs with a 4th boat on the river. LMBC IV was considerably below us and won spoons...

The 3rd Men showed themselves to be very competent early on in term. They always knew they were fast, and so it was no surprise when they bumped on the first 2 days inspite of Clare II's best efforts to block the river. On the third day they were left all alone, with the boats behind them impeded by Clare II and the boats in front of them all having bumped out. On the final day another piece of river-blocking from Clare II resulted in a technical row-over even though they had gained on Pembroke II.

The 2nd Men had perhaps the hardest job of all of our crews. Starting behing a very fast LMBC II crew and in front of a ludicrously lowly placed Peterhouse I, it was never going to be easy. They held Peterhouse at a canvas from before Grassy, but finally succumbed just round Ditton. On the second day they rowed over comfortably ahead of King's setting them up to chase a very slow Downing on the third day. Unfortunately disaster struck. They were blown by a gust of wind with 5 seconds to go, and went straight into the bank while King's rowed past. On the last day they closed on King's but it was never going to be enough to get them before they got Downing. Fate was not kind to the 2nd Men, but they can take comfort from the fact that they are without doubt the second best 2nd boat on the river.

The 1st Women had not really had a chance to prove themselves before the bumps. However they were very keen and met the challenge head-on. They put in a good row on the first day. Sidney bumped Catz behind them and they were never in any danger from the sandwich-boat. Ahead Girton were always just a bit too far away. On the second day the Sidney cox left his life-jacket at the boathouse, so Catz were awarded a technical bump. Again FaT rowed over comfortably, though with a little less determination than the first day. The third day was almost a carbon copy of the first with Sidney again bumping Catz. By this time the crew was getting a little bored of rowing over... The fourth day saw them chasing New Hall who were facing spoons. A very powerful effort from FaT saw New Hall bumped opposite the Plough. Sidney were nowhere. This is the first time in 5 years that FaT W1 have gone up in the Lents. Congratulations.

M1 have been looking fast all term. They won the Head to Head, Head of the Nene as S3, and Robinson Head. The question was never were they faster than the other crews, but were they faster by enough. An overhead crab on the first day when only 1/4 length off LMBC left us limping home holding Emma off with no difficulty, but unable to close on LMBC. On the second day they made ammends and hit LMBC just after Ditton. They were now chasing Caius who were Head. The plan on the 3rd day was to race the course at our own pace. It didn't work. The rowing was by no means the best they have produced and they never closed inside distance. They knew something special would be required on the final day. A tremendous start saw the gap from Caius down to 1/3 length around Grassy. Sadly it was just too much to ask, and FaT began to fade a little into the reach. At the same time Caius put in a huge push. They closed slightly at the end, but Caius finished comfortably ahead. It was a great effort by the fastest College boat on the Cam, but sadly not quite enough.

Well done to everyone. I had a great week, and I hope you enjoyed yourselves too. Things look good for the Mays...
7th Feb '03FaT win Robinson Head !by mjb
The Lent VIII won comfortably, beating Headship holders Caius by a margin of 1s and dispatching the rest of the field with ease.
The 2nd VIII lost out to a crew from LMBC, but beat no fewer than five first boats, finishing in a creditable 9th place; the 3rd VIII were the fastest 3rd VIII - beating a host of 2nd boats and finshed 16th overall. The 4th VIII came 30th, the only 4th boat to enter the race.
The Women's VIII finished 12th in their division.
Full results and race reports will soon be up in the Results section.

1st Feb '03HoNene - Won S3 8+by jwe
The men's first eight won S3 eights at the Head of the Nene, being fastest Cambridge college crew in 18:39 (2nd college was Downing with 19:06). They were only 5s slower than the fastest S2 crew and placed 5th overall.
27th Jan '03Fastest Head2Headby mcp
We had two crews competing in Saturday's Head2Head timetrial organised by Cambridge City Rowing Club.

The men's 1st VIII posted the fastest time of the day. Caius, starting Head in the Lent Bumps, went faster on the first leg of the two part race but were dispatched on the second to finish 10 seconds down overall.

The 2nd VIII finished well relative to other 2nd boats (beaten only by the matched crews of LMBC) and finished in the middle of the crews due to be racing around them in the 2nd division of the Lent Bumps.

The Results section has been updated with a summary of the full results.
2nd Dec '02Clare Novicesby mcp
Four of the club's new novice crews - comprising mostly first years - raced in the Clare Novice Regatta last week. There were some very good results, with three of the crews making their semi-finals! Thanks go to Matt and Helen for posting the details on the website - here.

Note that any club member can post results like this - if you do want to add your own comments about a race or help keep the site up to date like this simply go to Results -> Enter Results and follow the links! (If necessary events can be added to this page by going to Website -> Events.)
23rd Nov '02FaT WIN Emma Sprints by RJN
The 2nd VIII won Emma Sprints in style. The first race consisted of a small head start for our opposition (which bow 4 decided to ignore). We were winning too easily so we raced against them in IVs for msjority of the course. The second round saw us face some Emma Novices, similar tactics were used, although bow pair took on the 8 Emma novices for a good few strokes, and managed to hold them off. Our third race was a grudge match, as we took on the Pembroke boat that took out the other Trinity Crew. We beat them too. In the final we took on the might of Clare's mixed crew. It was a slightly closer race, but we still won easily. What can I say, we had the sticks of power on our side!
17th Nov '02Winter Head Resultsby mcp
Several 1st and 3rd crews raced in the Cambridge Winter Head on Saturday. Our results may be found here.

The 1st men's VIII, with their sights set on the Fairbairns, were 2nd fastest college behind Caius. The 1st novice men and both women's novice crews rowed - experiences which will be really useful for the Clare Novices and Novice Fairbairns.

The 1st women's IV also entered and, joined by some recent leavers (members of the 'old boys' club - Black Prince Boat Club), won Senior 3 VIIIs. (1 reply...)
7th Nov '02Men's 2nd 4 wins Uni IVsby AHLF
Congratulations to the Men's 2nd 4+ on their victory today, and on their winning the competition. Yet another indication that there are great things in store for us this year...
19th Aug '02Commonwealth Regattaby jpd
Emily Booker, rowing in the English Women's Lightweight Quad, won a gold medal. They beat Wales by two lengths, who beat Northern Ireland by a similar margin. Simon Knight was also racing in the Welsh Men's Eights, but unfortunately was not so successful. Congratulations to them both, hopefully forging the path for others from the club on to the international rowing scene. (1 reply...)
19th Jun '02May Bumpsby mcp
The results for all our crews can be found in full on the May Bumps results page. Our top crews performed well - the May VIII stayed level at 9th, whilst the 2nd, 3rd and 5th VIIIs all rose comfortably. The women's 1st VIII went up 1.
Many of the lower crews suffered, but the club is proud of everyone's efforts - most notably those of the 4th VIII - who remained the highest 4th VIII on the river - and the 6th VIII who avoided spoons with a gutsy and exciting row on the final day.

Well done to everyone involved. Watch this space for photos and other additions including the famous 2nd VIII song! (1 reply...)

2nd VIII in MS4 8+
With John Earl and Joe Grundy subbing for Matt Byrne and Hugh Colvin/Martin Peck
In our heat we had a strong row to come second to Emma I (the Head Crew) by only 1 second in a time of 3:09 (only 3 seconds off the MS4 8+ course record)! Heat winners went straight into the Final, second place to the repercharge. In the repercharge, we again had a good row, although not as aggressive as in the first race. We lost to Winchester School.
Stern IV in MN 4+
In the largest event of the day with 20 entries
Our heat was our first race of the day. We had a very good start and surged to a very smooth 38. After 300m we were 2 lengths up on our opposition, at which point the rate dropped and we held our lead to win our heat in 3:37.
In the semi, with two crews going through to the final, and with Will and I trebling up, we had decided that if we were a comfortable second after 500m we would just aim to hold that. In the race, despite being second at 500m we pushed through our opposition to take the lead. At 750m, they had obviously taken the rate down to save themselves for the final. We followed their change to remain about a length in front.
In the final, as in our heats, we lost ground off the start. At 500m Sam told us we were rowing through them, and despite two near-boatstopping incidents between then and the line we pushed all the way to take the win in 3:24 (the course record for MN 4+).
MS4 4+
In the heat (from Cox): Sam Adams, Henry Clouting, Will Thorne, Maris Goldmanis, Dan Walker. Jon Davies for Henry Clouting in the repercharge.
I didn't see the heat, but from what I could gather the crew had a technical row to claim second, and a place in the repercharge.
The repercharge was not a great race - we had jumped straight from the VIII to the IV, with Will and I having done the MN 4+ just before that. The boat felt very heavy, and at 600m it was obvious we were out of contention, so we took the rate down to save ourselves.
26th May '02Nines Regattaby mcp
The 2nd men won yet more pots today!! Well done, guys. Our results in the the Cambridge 99s regatta may be found here - our thanks to John Earl for collating all the information from the day.
14th May '02Successes at the weekendby mcp
Congratulations to the third men's VIII who won pots (handsome glass bottomed pewter tankards) at the Cam sprints on Sunday. Success was also enjoyed by John and Neil in a pair, and Sarah and Sally who rowed with recent club leavers in a IV.
First and Third was also represented in the Head2Head (John Earl in his single scull!), and at Bedford on Saturday, where the women's 1st VIII and the men's 2nd VIII gained yet more race experience. (2 replies...)
7th May '02Beginning of term racingby mcp
The Head of the Cam and Nottingham City Regatta were both last weekend. Our men's 2nd VIII travelled to Nottingham and enjoyed some exciting side by side racing, and was also pleased to post better times than Downing II.
The men's lower boats squad fielded two crews for the Head of the Cam in Cambridge, and the women's squad, one.
Our website has been updated with all the relevant results.
9th Mar '02Womens Head of the Riverby mcp
Because of yet more gusty winds, the Women's Head of the River Race, which our 1st women's VIII travelled down to row in today, has been cancelled.
It is a great shame particularly since college women's crews never usually have the chance to row it, because it often clashes with the final day of the Lent Bumps.
4th Mar '02The Lentsby mcp
The Lent Bumps last week saw a good deal of success for 1st & 3rd.
The men's 1st VIII saw its first bump in Lents or Mays in two years. It turned itself around after dropping to both Caius and Maggie, to end up third on the river - down just one place after bumping Emmanuel on Saturday. The other men's crews also performed well, rising two or more despite loosing a day's racing due to heavy winds.

Unfortunately, luck did not go the way of the women's 1st VIII - which was hampered by obstruction ahead for most of the week and overall also fell one. The women's 2nd VIII enjoyed themselves by rising a well earned two places in their three days.

Our website has descriptions of all the races and plenty of pictures of our crews and other boats on the river. Many thanks to Richard Spencer, Jonathan Davies and Chris Stone for providing most of them - and there are more to follow soon.

There are also some pictures from the Boat Club Dinner and bop - thank you jpd.
22nd Feb '02Getting-on-Race by arr
Two women's crews, the 2nd and 3rd VIIIs both competed in the Getting-on-Race this afternoon, racing other college lower boats to try and win places in the Lent Bumps next week.

The 2nd VIII, who have been performing to a high level recently, had a very controlled row, despite a slight incident approximately 15 strokes from the end. Their race was well together and powerful, and showed good potential for the remainder of this term, and next.

The 3rd VIII, who until last night didn't exist, and only today had their first outing (the race), had a brilliant row, including a nice little scrap with a Christs men's VIII about 100m from the finish line. RTT, complete with CULRC lycra, showed surprising competency in his coxing, and steered a good line around the corners, helping his crew to register a very respectable time.

Well done to all those who raced today, especially the 3rd VIII, many of whom were dragged in at short notice! (1 reply...)
9th Feb '02Robinson Headby mcp
Congratulations must go to the women's 2nd VIII who missed penants by a mere 4 seconds yesterday - beating the men's crew and finishing just 8 seconds behind the 1st VIII... an impressive performance.
I'll add the results to our site tomorrow, but the official results are here. (1 reply...)
16th Feb '02Pembroke Regattaby mcp
Having watched most of the day's races, I have uploaded details of our crews' performances in today's Pembroke Regatta. Head to "Results" to see them.
Note that at present all the reports and opinions are my own and are not officially endorsed; if you wish to make any additions or changes simply use the feedback page!

Whilst it hasn't been the most spectacularly successful day, watching the races from the towpath is brilliant fun - well worth the trip if you are ever able to.
30th Jan '02Cambridge Winter Leagueby mcp
As promised, the details of our performance in the Cambridge Winter League have been added. The crew of last term's novices had a good result - finishing not much more than a minute behind the 1st boat and beating all six Novice category entries.
As usual, head to "Results" to see them.
29th Jan '02Head 2 Headby mcp
I have updated the site with some details of the weekend's racing. To see them simply choose "Results" on the main menu.

Whilst it would be foolish to draw too many conclusions this early in term, in terrible conditions the women's 1st VIII put in a brilliant time and hinted there may be plenty to look forward to in the weeks to come. The men's squad crews performed acceptably considering the weather and equipment difficulties.
More details of the Cambridge Winter League will follow when I can get through to their website!
6th Dec '01UEA Challengeby jwe
On Wednesday (December 5), the novice men went to Norwich to compete with the novice crews of the University of East Anglia, and of Churchill College, at UEA's invitation. They raced over a 1.5km course. They beat both UEA crews; the timing result for Churchill's row was a bit questionable, but Churchill seem to have won overall.
30th Nov '01Senior Fairbairnsby mcp
More details will follow, but its been a good day for Trinity, with the 1st men's VIII coming in as 3rd college VIII (equal with Maggie), the 1st men's IV coming 2nd, the 1st women's IV coming 4th, and the old boys crews performing phenomenally finishing only 2s behind Emmanuel and Downing (beating our 1st VIII by 8s) and as highest placed 2nd VIII respectively.
(The winners of the wine, and a few more details, will be seen to later.)
30th Nov '01Novice Fairbairnsby rjn
The 1st novice women came 5th in the novice fairbairns yesterday, keeping up the good novice women's results in the club for the last 3 years. The 1st novice women, abandoning the war paint, and unfortunatly a crew member down (note to future lower boats captains: ask all novices if they have any compulsary trips to the Tate Art Gallery on the day of novice Fairbairns before picking crews) raced a good solid race yesterday. Stealing the stroke of the 2nd novice VIII (who'd already raced the course once), and putting her on bowside, the 1st VIII were ready to go. Tom had the 'great' idea of going for a quick paddle before the race, pushing off 5 minutes before we were suppossed to be marshalling the marshals went crazy. After a good few minutes of '1st + 3rd what are you doing?' (classic quote of the day: Marshal to a Queens novice boat: 'Queens, what are you doing?', Queens: 'we don't know') and '1st + 3rd you'll be disquallified if you don't spin and go back NOW' (Tom: 'don't worry, keep rowing'), they came back to to the boathouse and marshalled. Going off behind LMBC they had a good start and were looking comfortable across the course. There were no major disasters in the boat. The 7 strong bankparty however had a bit of a problem with a truck blocking the whole road - meaning that the 1st VIII got a few strokes of rowing without a crazed shouting from the bank distracting them. The girls rowed a focussed and powerful race. Despite a number of them almost throwing up on the finish line were still in good spirits at and managed to sing all the way back to the boat house. They pissed off Downing the most, changing the lyrics of 'we'd rather be at Oxford than St Johns', to 'we'd rather be at Oxford than at Downing'. Loving the controversy this caused they sang other 'adapted' versions at Robinson and Jesus (after telling them that Jesus would add 10 secs to our time if they didn't stop singing they sang 'we'd rather be at Jesus than at Oxford') but manged to get back to the boat house alive.
They (and the club) should be proud of what they acheived in less than ideal circumstances yesterday. I certainly am.
24th Nov '01Clare Novice Regattaby mcp
What a day! Both women's crews won their way to their semi-finals, and the men's 2nd boat performed v. well too. Disaster for the men's 1st boat in the 1st round, but clearly great potential to do extremely well next week.

I have added some descriptions based on what I saw today to the Clare Novices Results page, and hope to add a few pictures soon - hopefully by Monday night. If anyone has anything to add or alter, please email me.
23rd Nov '01Clare Novice Regattaby mcp
The 2nd women's novice boat won their way through two rounds of the clare novices today. In their first race they dispatch Jesus C easily - even gaining 1/2 length's lead after 2 or 3 strokes.
Unfortunately, errors by the start marshalls meant we crashed in to the tow path side bank off the start against Caius in the next race. The ensuing panic resulted in a number of further encounters with the river bank and gave our opponents a lead of about half the reach (a conservative estimate).
However, some brilliant rowing and numerous disasters in the opposing boat meant that by the time both crews got going together Caius were just one length up!
The girls then had the excitement of a nail-biting side by side race through the railway bridge and to the finish... to a final verdict of a win by ~ 1/4 of a length!!!
17th Nov '01Novice Men Win!by jpd
The Men's Novices stormed the Winter Head today, (almost) sweeping the (novice) board.

The 1st Men's Novice VIII came 2nd in M Stu Beg 8+ (losing to Westminster School), in a time of 10:34 (faster than last year's 1st VIII!).

The 2nd Men's Novice VIII came 9th in M Stu Beg 8+, the second fastest college 2nd VIII (losing by 3 seconds to LMBC II). They crashed at Grassy (not Peter Brandt stylee), and were 9 seconds quicker than LMBC II over the second half of the course. They clocked a time of 11:23 (they lost an estimated 18 seconds in the crash, which would have put them in front of LMBC I!).

The 3rd Men's Novice VIII came equal 15th (with a Kings College London boat), the fastest (and only) 3rd VIII, beating Magdalene II and Jesus II in a time of 12:13.

The 4th Men's Novice VIII came 17th, in a superb time of 12:23 (only 10s slower than the 3rd VIII).

The 1st Women's Novice VIII came 5th of the Cambridge colleges (behind LMBC, Pembroke, Christ's and Magdalene) in 12:35.

The 2nd Women's Novice VIII came 9th in their category, in a time of 13:58.

The 1st Men's VIII won ARA Novice 8+, in a time of 8:59 (their second race), and came 4th in Student Senior 8+, behind Kings College London, Emma/LMBC composite and Jesus, in a storming time of 8:42.

The 2nd Men's VIII came 7th in Student Novice 8+, in 9:32.

A big thanks from the MLBCs to all coaches, subs, bank parties etc. who have enabled these fantastic results.

17th Nov '01Cambridge Winter Headby mcp
The results from today's racing are out - here. Since most of us are away training tomorrow, for a full summary of our performances and pictures and stuff check back late tomorrow or Monday.
A quick scan shows the 1st novice men going fastest of all novice crews, the women's novices coming 5th, and the men's 1st VIII posting the 5th fastest college time in a closely fought battle... a result we fully intend to improve on in Fairbairns... Any other stats, anyone? (2 replies...)
15th Nov '01Queens Ergsby RN
5 1st + 3rd boats raced at Queens Ergs. All of whom looked menacing in their Extermin VIII t-shirts. Jonny Boy, who we 'won' last year, also made an appearance to support the novice women of 2001.
The 1st novice women were the first 1st + 3rd crew 'race' (if thats an appropriate word?). We decided to enter the newly chosen fixed crews into the competition, and not just the best erg times. This makes their performance is even more credible. They came 3rd in their heat, with p.b's from over half the crew. A p.b by at least 2 seconds was put in by bow girl Hannah Barry, despite her falling off her seat. It was a strained heat, with new rules (that we didn't know about) put in and taken out again within about 5 mins (when the computer system worked and then broke down!).
We met the 2nd VIII at Great Gate (after a break for pizza), and used this opportunity to tell the 1st VIII that they had got through to the final - coming 8th overall.
There were also fantastic performances form the 2nd VIII. Being a rower down, the amazing Emily Chappell offered to do 2 500m pieces for us. She gave everything for her first one, collapsing off the erg, only to get back on a few minutes later to put in another respectable performance.
The 1st VIII's final was at 10.00, and was delayed (meaning that the beautiful and diligent women's lower boats captains had been at Queens for over 5 hours).
As the standard this year was so high, we decided that our aim for the evening was to come top 5, which would mean moving up significantly from 8th. Fantastic perfomances were put in by everybody, Hannah pulled 1.53 (managing to stay on her seat this time!), Nonny pulled her first sub 1.50. Everyone gave it everything. We don't know the official results, but we finished 3rd.
The boys did well, with the 1st VIII getting to the final, coming 7th overall.
Photos will be on the website soon. (1 reply...)
11th Nov '01Head of the River IVsby mcp
The IVs head is a huge processional head race involving 550 boats on the River Thames. It is our chance to challenge the likes of Pinsent and Cracknell in the same event...!
Both the 1st men's and 1st women's IVs went and raced it - the men getting within 3 mins of Pinsent's time ;-) There are some more details on our results page and a few pictures. (1 reply...)
1st Nov '01University IVs, Day 4by mcp
Most unfortunately, at short notice the Light IV is unable to make our race this afternoon, and all possibilities of subs or rescheduling it have been explored without success.
With all the crew now at 'full fitness', it is a great shame to be missing the opportunity to see to what extent we could have improved upon the weekend's performance.

Get out and support the 2nd men's IV at 2pm - they are now our soul crew still in the hunt for glory in the Uni IVs and are up against Christ's II. (1 reply...)

1st Nov '01Uni IVs semi-finalsby mcp
In a good race, the men's 2nd IV, our final hope for a win in the Uni IVs, have lost to Christ's in the semis by 6 seconds. More information will follow.
31st Oct '01University IVs, Day 3by mcp
The 2nd men were beaten by LMBC II in the Autumn Head, so had to fight hard to win their place in the Semi Finals tomorrow.
Our Uni IVs results page has descriptions of some of the races so far for those who are interested - thank you to everyone who has written one.
Sadly the women are now out of the IVs altogether, after their 2nd IV (incl. a couple of subs) lost to Catz 4.
30th Oct '01University IVs, Day 2by mcp
The men's 1st IV had a superb row this afternoon, attacking the favourites, Christ's, and loosing by just 3 seconds. Well done guys! Something of an improvement over the 40 seconds deficit at the weekend....!?
The 2nd men's IV and the Coxless IV also cruised comfortably through the day's races, beating Tit Hall II and Jesus respectively. More details to follow.... (3 replies...)
30th Oct '01University IVs, Day 1by mcp
Four of the club's six senior IVs were due to race on Monday, but two went straight through to the 2nd round when their opposition scratched.
Meanwhile, the 1st women's IV cruised through their first round against Magdalene, winning comfortably by 3 lengths, but sadly came up against the powerful Peterhouse in their 2nd round, and the men's 3rd coxed IV met Catz II, and both crews have been knocked out.

28th Oct '01Autumn Head Resultsby mcp
The men's and the women's 1st coxed IVs both came 4th in the college IVs events in the Cambridge Autumn Head on Saturday. The 2nd IVs also performed creditably, placing in the middle of their events. Meanwhile the renegade Coxless IV proved yet again that training, outings and coaching do actually help - or perhaps just that coxes are worth their weight, after crashing on the reach!
Special mention should also be made of our men's novice crew (crew and results to follow shortly) who not only completed the course but beat plenty of crews too. (3 replies...)
22nd Sep '01Oxford City Bumpsby gf
After a hiatus which lasted many decades (excepting only a one-off anniversary event in the mid-60s), last year the Oxford City Bumps returned from the dead.

This year, thanks to the efforts of SJB, BPBC turned up with two scratch IVs. In keeping with our usual randomness, our coxes were from Emma and New Hall. Racing was under Torpids rules.

The nominally "first" IV (CCSI, JPB, AJH, GF) was pretty agricultural and opened with a row-over 1/4 of a length off our old adversaries, Merton Gannets. Meanwhile, the other crew (CWEP, DEM, SJB, JPD) dispatched an aged CORC crew in no time.

Second time out, the chasing BPBC crew destroyed us off the start. In an instant, they had closed to just a few feet off our stern. Push for push, we held them there for what seemed like ages, then eventually had to concede the bump and with it first boat status.

We then switched the tractor beam on to the Gannets and hit them just before the line, keeping our crew level, with the others being up two from one race.

Race 3: dull row-overs.

Finally, the crew that had become the 2nd IV was chased by a worryingly rapid CORC effort. They hit us emphatically, but we discovered later that this was only after both of our crews had rowed past a crashed IV which had started third (and due to that crash finished last).

So: Having started 5th and 7th, we finished the other way round in 3rd and 4th. Headship next year? Well, IC hold it for now and are no soft touch. Anyway, the "second" crew went up four, and hence can claim discretionary blades. One problem...

We now need to decide what our blades look like!

BTW, welcome today to our latest random ringer, Jim Brooks - a Gannet who was in the crew finishing second - he'll be joining us for the HOTC in October, along with FaT-coaching Maggie buftie Paul Alexander. (3 replies...)
17th Sep '01Boston Marathonby cema
There were two entries involving First and Third members in the marathon on Sunday - a woman's VIII in which Sarah Taylor, Rosie Chance (BPBC) and I rowed, and a men's quad which was stroked by Joe Grundy and included Tom Rose. Both were shamefully beaten by Iain the Boatman in his single scull!

The Boston Rowing Marathon is a 31 mile head race from Lincoln to Boston. (5 replies...)
