First and Third were well represented in this year's races. Alex Summers won the Fairbairn Junior Sculls and the Bushe-Fox Freshman's Sculls, whilst in the Women's Pairs events the only entries came from First and Third; Sarah Cochrane and Aileen Dennis entered the Foster-Fairbairn Pairs and Sarah Taylor entered Magdelene Silver Pairs with Jess Evans of New Hall. John Earl and Neil Talbott were unfortunately knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the men's Foster-Fairbairn Pairs by a Caius pair and Rebecca Palmer came second in the Women's Championship Sculls (Delafield Trophy).

I don't think FaT can be classed as winning either the Magdelene Silver or the Foster-Fairbairn pairs purely by being the only entries. I think as far as CUCBC are concerned the events did not happen.

Re: Women's Pairs I'd hope we'd get the points for it. No chance of getting your names on the boards, though if you'd managed to race each other for the Magdalene Silver Pairs ...

No chance of getting your names on the boards, though if you'd managed to race each other for the Magdalene Silver Pairs ... Why not? Winners of the Clinker division in the 2TCS go up even when no other clinkers are entered.

While places on the boards should be reserved for achievers I think that the women's pairs should go on the boards. Perhaps only as a congratulations for getting up and entering and a persuasion to get people in future to enter whether they think they are good enough to win or not. Getting people to do small boats (and enter races in them) is going to improve the quality of rowing in first and third.

I agree that small boats will improve the quality of rowing at FaT and the CUCBC Small Boats regatta is a great opportunity to practise racing. The training camp at the beginning of this term should be predominantly small boats and then everyone MADE to race the following week. Sally and I had only really practised for a week when we won two years ago. I do NOT agree that the women's pairs should go on the boards - boards are not there as 'congratulations for getting up and entering', they are there for people who win races.

But if you'd have had opposition who had then scratched, you'd be deemed to have won a race without having rowed over the course. Or if your only opposition came from another Trinity crew (e.g. 98 when we were 4 of the 6 men's crews and 2 of the 3 women's), have you really proved yourself against other colleges? If no other College can raise a crew for these events then you are winners and should be there.

If no other College can raise a crew for these events then you are winners and should be there. Constitutionally, if no other college can raise a crew for one of these events it is cancelled and there are no winners.

Actually, in all seriousness, while it is quite nice to see my name up on the boards for beating absolutely no-one (and losing by 45s to the only girl in the race in the process) it is slightly embarrassing to consider that (in terms of names on boards) that result was equivalent to a Lents or Mays headship or participation in the Boat Race...
