30th Apr '07Small Boats Regatta Winsby bjg
This year's Small Boats Regatta saw a bumper crop of First and Third entries, with only the Bushe-Fox Freshmen's Sculls and the men's Lowe Double Sculls lacking a blue and gold presence. We also had some good wins to go with it.

In the men's Foster Fairbairn Pairs, Bryn Garrod and Dan Jane were successful in what is likely to be Dan's last competitive action for the club before he moves to Rio de Janeiro 'to do maths'.

In the women's Magdalene Silver Pairs, Erica Thompson and Lilie Weaver did well to combat exam pressures and a lack of outings to cover the course quicker than their opposition, just unfortunately not by enough to prevent it from being a dead-heat. This gave them another pair of university medals to add to those won in similar circumstances in the women's Foster Fairbairn Pairs two years ago.

However, the most successful First and Third competitor of the week was Helen Ralston, who, in her first appearances for club, won the Women's Championship Sculls and the women's Foster Fairbairn Pairs with fellow university lightweight Fran Rawlins. Hopefully the four 'easily' verdicts they notched up between them are a sign of good things to come for this term!

Away from the racing side, it was also good to see Peter Brandt in Cambridge to present his trophy for the men's Maiden Sculls. In his words, four First and Third victories 'made the trip up from London worthwhile'! Finally, if anyone would like to donate a pair to the club (preferably weighted at around 65kg), it would be a much-appreciated help with logistics next year. (3 replies...)
12th Apr '07Lent Term Round-upby elt
As Pedro said at the dinner, it would make this task a lot easier to simply sum up the events that First and Third did not win this term... but I suppose I'd better do it properly!

Term started with the usual Lent Training Camp held in Cambridge. Attendance was excellent, with an especially notable turn-out from ex-novices, making it a very productive week. We laid down a good solid week of training that set the tone well for the rest of term.

At the Cambridge Head-2-Head, the 2nd VIIIs outshone the 1sts, coming top of their respective categories while the 1st VIIIs each came 2nd. However, the 1st VIIIs then put in a stellar performance at the Peterborough Head of the Nene, taking the honours as top college crews. M1 also won the S3 category on a day notable for decidedly un-Peterborough-ish warmth and sunshine. M2 and W2 enjoyed the day out as the first off-Cam race for many.

At around this time, our new boats from Janousek arrived - two new VIIIs, to be christened Black Prince and Valkyrie, and two new sculls named Pike and Eel. We are very grateful to our sponsors JP Morgan for their support, which has helped us to purchase this new equipment.

The next major race of term was the Robinson Head, at which it became clear that First and Third were truly dominating college rowing this term. All crews entered won their categories - M1, M2, W1 and W2! A report followed in "The Cambridge Student" describing First and Third "in Red Hot Form".

In the lead-up to Bumps, there is always a lot to be gained from the Pembroke Regatta. First and Third entered three men's and three women's eights. On this day, the men's eights really pulled out the stops, winning all three men's categories. W2 and W3 both raced three rounds and W1 were beaten by a strong Jesus crew in the final, making this the third year in a row in second place.

The competition for places in the upper boats also led to some fantastic results by the lower boats this term. W3 and M5 both proved themselves credits to their Lower Boats' Captains hard work by rowing an excellent Getting-On Race and qualifying for their places in the Lents. This is the first time in Club history that a third women's eight has got on to the Lents.

I'll run through the Lents results in reverse order. W3 finished the week Foot of the River despite two gutsy row-overs ahead of arch-rivals Pembroke IV (a crew which also knocked them out of Pembroke Regatta). M5 ended Up 1, many of the crew achieving their first ever bump (some after a long time trying!). M4, the "Beer Boat" whom I have not yet mentioned, rowed-over on the first day and thereafter were bumped by three faster crews on their way up (including St Edmund's 1, coxed by our own Abbi Fox). M3 narrowly missed out on claiming their blades this term, bumping up three times although a fluffed start on Day 2 left them with no crews to chase ahead.

M2 and W2, however, converted their series of victories this term into another fantastic result for the club - eight smiley yellow faces and two sets of well-deserved blades. Both crews bumped extremely quickly on every day of Lents (before Grassy Corner), showing the real benefit of hard training - easy racing!

Overshadowing even these fine achievements were the rises of both Lent VIIIs to their respective Headships. M1 bumped Caius at Ditton on the first day, then rowed over strongly ahead of chasing crews. W1 bumped Emmanuel, Caius and Clare, rowing over ahead of an almost empty river on the final day as many crews bumped out behind. There were enormous crowds on the bank, including a very loud delegation of bufties at Ditton! Thanks to everyone for all your support; it really does make a difference.

As is traditional, the Headships were celebrated by burning a boat on the Backs. The Fair Maid of Kent met her demise under a total lunar eclipse, watched by a gathering crowd including many current and past members of the Club as well as the Master, Sir Martin Rees. We hope that this display of First and Third's dominance on the River is one that will encourage members to continue rowing at a high level and non-members perhaps to take up the sport. The results this term are the work of too many people to name here: coaches and crews alike have put in blood, sweat and tears to bring us to this point and there is no better testament to the effectiveness of hard training. Well rowed, First and Third!

As I am late in writing this, I have some more results to add! The 2007 Women's Head of the River Race was rowed in lovely weather by our first and second women's eights. Fresh from the success of Lents, both crews put in storming performances. W1 were top college crew overall, even beating Blondie. W2 were 6th college crew, less than minute behind W1, and beat several college first eights including Caius and Clare.

Finally, I must mention our triallists who have been working even harder this term with the University crews. Toby Garnett rowed with the winning Goldie crew against Isis on the Tideway. We also had three representatives - Lilie Weaver, Fran Rawlins, and Helen Ralston - in the women's lightweight boat at Henley, who lost in rough conditions on a shortened course. They will no doubt be out for revenge against Oxford at BUSA regatta next term.

Cambridge today won both the Boat Race and the Goldie/Isis race to add to victories for the Veterans yesterady and Spare Pair on Wednesday. Particular congratulations to Tobias Garnett, who rowed for Goldie, and Peter Summers, who rowed for the Cambridge veterans. (2 replies...)
5th Mar '07Back Where We Belongby elt
Congratulations to the 1st Men and 1st Women, who ended Saturday's racing with commanding rows over as Head of the River in their respective divisions.

The 2nd Men and 2nd Women also won their oars this week with a fine display of dominance lower down, each bumping on every night of racing.

23rd Feb '07W3 and M5 row onby ELT
Congratulations to M5 and W3 who succceeded in gaining their places on the River with two storming rows in the Getting-On Race today.

M5 have by default also gained themselves the 5th eight Headship, as the only 5th eight to row on, beating several third and fourth eights in the process!

W3 will take a place in First and Third history as the first (hopefully of many!) third women's crew to take part in the Lents.

Good luck to both crews, and those with permanent places, in the Bumps next week.

11th Feb '07Clean sweep for FaTby bjg
The recent Robinson Head was very successful for First and Third, with the club winning all four categories (men's and women's eights, men's and women's lower eights). This made the prizegiving ceremony very enjoyable, even if lacking in variety. Until recently, this was considered to be the best indicator of bumps performance, but the tide of opinion has recently turned, so let's hope for similar successes at Pembroke Regatta!
8th Dec '06Mich term round-upby ELT
The term started well with training beginning before lectures had even started and consistent coaching laying the groundwork for success in fours. The first weeks were very hectic with novice tubbing schedules running all day every day.

The Autumn Head provided the first indication of our form relative to other crews. The women's first IV showed their strength by winning outright, and the men's crews all put in creditable performances; notably the Light IV, second to LMBC by a tantalising 2s margin, and the Second Coxed IV who (even handicapped by a considerable amount of extra weight in the cox's seat) won their category by a very long way! The men's first VIII also showed they were on the pace, trailing the winners by just 6 seconds.

In the University Fours, the men's fours were unlucky to be knocked out relatively early on, although the difficult draw certainly provided some good racing. The women's second four were taken down by Emma II in an eventful race which was not decided until very late. The first women then demonstrated their loyalty to the club, taking revenge by promptly thrashing Emma I in the final with a three length margin. A further set of university medals which confirms First and Third's continued dominance of the women's fours.

Meanwhile, the lower boats captains and a group of dedicated coaches had been working their (gold) socks off to bring a new set of novices up to scratch in time for the Novice Regatta season. After fantastic results from the women who came third in Queens' Ergs (not to mention one All Time Queens' Ergs Record from Corinne Vannatta), and the gruelling training schedules endured by the men, we were expecting great things and were not to be disappointed. Emma Sprints and Clare Novice Regatta saw our finest men, women and penguins in action on the river with their spangly new JP Morgan club tshirts. This culminated after several days of eventful racing with the First Novice Men bringing home the prestigious Clare Novice Regatta Cup. An awesome result and very well deserved.

The last event of term, Fairbairns, a 5k head race for senior eights and shorter distances for fours and novices, saw no fewer than 17 entries from First and Third and Black Prince. The novices were first up to prove they could go the distance and did so in style, the men's Second Novice eight winning their category and coming sixth overall, just 30 seconds behind the First Novice Men who came third. Both crews then raced again the following day as new seniors, beating various (real) senior eights in the process! The First Novice Women rowed well to come tenth and the lower boats also did very well, including one composite eight with Homerton, an unusual but highly successful initiative. Again, the First Novice Women took on the challenge of Senior Fairbairns and rose to it, beating Newnham II as the only third eight in the race.

Good fours results earlier in term led to a double victory for First and Third in the men's and women's Fairbairn Fours, but unfortunately both first eights missed out by a margin of just 10 seconds to the eventual winners, Jesus. Nevertheless, both defeated the crews ahead of them in the Lents and will be looking forwards to maintain and extend this lead next term. The second eights, both a little beset by issues with availabilities and the flag, raced well and beat several other second eights (and the men several first eights!).

All told, it has been a very good term of racing and I look forward to seeing what we are capable of next term. Well rowed, First and Third!
5th Dec '06Scullers Headby SJB
Congratulations to Jon Davies who came 5th overall, and won the S3 pennant, at the Scullers Head in London at the weekend. In unusally flat conditions, Jon was posted a faster time than that of the S1 and S2 winners, only 1 minute outside the course record.

4th Nov '05Men and Women win IVsby mcp
First and Third have won 2 of the top 3 competitions in the University IVs competition. The men's coxless IV (known for historical reasons as the 'Light IV') beat LMBC and Jesus to take the coveted Light IV title. And the women's 1st IV won the women's competition, beating Newnham in a cracking race - a fine achievement, particularly for a crew beset by injury woes for the entirety of the preceding two weeks!

The wins are the first in the historic University IVs since 1997 and have won the oarsmen University Medals and their oars.

The club entered 6 crews and details of all the racing (including the 4 wins over LMBC!) can be found on the Uni IVs results page.

The men's IV- and the women's 1st IV+ have both reached the finals of their respective divisions in the University Four Oared races. Your support on Friday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm would be appreciated; directions to the river are here. Good luck to everyone racing!
(And please could someone on the tow path text me the results, as I'll be in a meeting. Thanks!)
5th Jul '05May term roundupby ALC
The term started out on a high with a series of wins in the CUCBC Small Boats Regatta, with Tom Coker and Dan Holland winning the men's Foster-Fairbairn pairs, with Erica Thompson and Lilie Weaver jointly winning the women's Foster-Fairbairn pairs with Amelia Russell and Catherine Aiken in an amazing dead heat, in the FaT-dominated final. In addition, Graham Sills and Andrew Lea-Cox won the Lowe Double Sculls, adding to a spree of University medals.

5 men's VIIIs and 4 women's VIIIs competed in the May Bumps this year, with the Fellow's VIII narrowly missing getting-on, together with the 7th men's VIII.

The 4th women stayed level, whilst W3 put in a sterling performance, winning their blades. Unfortunately W2 went the other way, getting spoons. However, building on their superb performance in the Lents, the 1st women went up 4 into the 1st division - their highest ever in the Mays.

Despite being slightly lower on numbers compared to last term, the men's lower boats still put in some commendable performances, with the 5th VIII going up 2 through the carnage of the 5th division. The 4th VIII, half of whom only started rowing this term, managed to avoid spoons, going down 2; whilst the grads proved themselves worthy of rowing as the 3rd VIII by going up 2 after holding off a powerful Emma crew on the first day.

Due to a large shortage in oarsmen trialling for the top 2 boats, the 2nd VIII trained as a IV for most of the term, with 4 super-subs jumping in towards the end of term. With only a few outings as a full crew, they then rocketed up to knock Caius II off the 2nd division headship and then bumped Peterhouse to secure their position in the 1st division as highest 2nd boat.

The 1st men, including 4 of this year's novices, put in a spirited performance, managing to hold off a powerful Queens crew (eager for revenge after last year) on the first day by bumping Robinson. However Queens managed to achieve the bump on the 3rd day, leaving M1 exactly where they started at 7th - a fine achievement given the inexperience of the crew.

It is extremely encouraging to see the improvements in the club since the beginning of the year, notably in the women's squad and the lower boats. Along with other changes, for the first time ever, we have two females as men's and women's captain next year. Hopefully the female touch will work wonders. (3 replies...)

The May Bumps start on Wednesday! Below you will find the latest updates and gossip as the drama unfolds. If anyone posts any, that is!
Also the full bumps charts, updated from mobiles on the towpath, are at the bottom of our main May Bumps page.

First and Third have a total of 9 crews - 5 men's VIIIs and, for the first time, 4 women's. The 1st men are starting 7th in the first division behind Robinson, whilst the women are Head of the 2nd division and looking to launch themselves firmly into the 1st. The 2nd men also have a chance of great glory, starting directly behind Caius II at the top of the 2nd division chasing them for the 2nd boat Headship.

11th Jun '05Women's 4th VIII row onby mcp
Congrats to the 4th women's VIII for rowing onto the bumps for the first time ever, beating 3rd VIIIs from Christ's, Corpus, Fitz, Magdalene and Trinity Hall in the process. They join three other 4th boats in the bumps, from Jesus, LMBC and Newnham.

Of the 10 successful women's crews, only Fitzwilliam II and Peterhouse II were in the bumps last year, so fingers crossed for a lucky draw!

The men's club did not fare so well, neither the Fellows (rowing as the 6th VIII) nor 7th VIIIs were successful. I believe it is at least 50 years since just 5 FaT men's crews rowed in the Mays, but this is largely due to the smaller number of men's boats today (a total of 94 in the Mays compared with a peak of 129 in the 1970s). LMBC are the only club to have 6 men's VIIIs this year.

The May Bumps begin this coming Wednesday. Encourage all your friends to come and watch - it is the best opportunity to show what amazing fun it is to row! Helpful information on this site include directions to the river and our famous bumps guide.

We will also be running our usual full bumps charts results service from the towpath, full details to follow early next week. (3 replies...)

This afternoon has seen superb success for FaT in the CUCBC small boats regatta!!

In the men's events Dan Holland and Tom Coker have won the men's Foster-Fairbairn pairs and Andrew Lea-Cox and Graham Sills have won the Lowe Double Sculls.

There was drama in the women's Foster-Fairbairn pairs - the FaT on FaT final was declared a dead heat! Amelia, Catherine, Erica and Lilie are all being awarded the win.

3rd Apr '05Lent Term roundupby ALC
First and Third entered a very impressive 6 men's VIIIs and 4 women's VIIIs into this year's Lent Bumps.

The 5th and 6th men's VIIIs unfortunately didn't get on, but the 5ths were the fastest non-qualifiers and were very unfortunate to just miss out on being the only 5th boat in the Bumps. The 3rd and 4th women also put in a valiant effort, but didn't get on.

W2 got on comfortably and were all set for an exciting Bumps, but due to a series of unfortunate circumstances beyond their control, things just didn't quite go to plan and they rowed over.

W1 really stole the show, going up a tremendous 6 places to their highest ever place on the river. Some fantastic rowing leading to some well-deserved blades! Many thanks go to Iain Law for all his efforts in coaching them.

The men's lower boats were fantastic last term, showing a superb level of training and commitment. The 4th VIII were unlucky to go down 2, whilst the relatively experienced 3rd (gent's) VIII narrowly missed out on blades, going up 3.

This year we tried a new idea of keeping the majority of the 1st novices as a crew through into Lent Term, and they raced as the 2nd VIII. These guys really showed a great attitude towards their training, and with the help of Tom Rose, came through as an excellent team. Come the races, they were unfortunate to get caught up in Wolfson's misshaps. Clearly the stronger crew, Wolfson bumped them, then had equipment failure the next day, causing us to unexpectedly 'row past', only for them to bump back on the last day.

The 2nd VIII also went on to put a very repectable performance in the HoRR, coming 286th overall and 15th in the novice division.

The 1st men once again started behind a Caius crew which had been looking a little unsettled throughout the term, but had suddenly made 2 substitutions a week before Bumps and were therefore a bit of an unknown quantity, as were Downing. It was quickly clear that the subsititutions had really helped Caius and that Downing were never going to pose much of a problem.

It is dissappointing that we couldn't get Caius in the end (particularly for those members of the crew for whom it was the 2nd or 3rd year they'd tried), but all the hard work and commitment showed by the crew was definitely worth it. We certainly reinforced our solid 2nd place on the river and will be ready and waiting for Caius next year.

The weather was perfect for the Challenge Sculls this year - cool, sunny, and with a firm head-wind adding interest and pain down the Reach.

FaT put on a good show: forming 2/3 of the Clinker division (sadly the lower 2/3); entering every event (even the ladies doubles without having been out together before); and Graham Sills stroked his way to 3rd in the Mens Singles in 12:11.

Whether or not people took the traditional scenic route, I hope 'twas all good fun :p

First and Third men came 249th in 21:40, making them the fastest Cambridge college crew ahead of Clare by just over a second and beating a Granta crew in the process.

First and Third women came 447th in 23:39, placing them second of the Cambridge college women's crews behind Magdalene (who beat three Osiris crews!).

Black Prince men came 213th in 21:22 whilst Black Prince women came 488th in 24:27.

Elsewhere, the first three coxless crews belong to CUBC whilst the first two coxed crews belong to OUBC so all bets are off for the Boat Race, although Cambridge have a slight early edge for the reserve race; CUBC V won S1+, whilst Isis IV won S2+.

CULRC and CUWBC both have work to do as their Oxford counterparts put on a strong showing; Osiris crews won WS2+ and WS3+ academic pennants. Black Prince also have work to do as Boar's Head won the W3+ club category. (26 replies...)

31st Oct '04University Fours weekby mcp
We have five crews racing this week in the University IVs. For the crews and the results through the week check out our Uni IVs results page.

The CUCBC website gives full details of the draw (pdf file) and timetable.

Our crews would be delighted to have support for their races. The 1st women and 2nd and 3rd men's IVs begin tomorrow:

1st women, 1st division: 1.40pm vs. Trinity Hall
2nd men, 1st division: 2pm vs. Wolfson
3rd men, 2nd division: 2pm vs. Downing II

The 2nd women's IV's first race is against Emme II on Tuesday (2.30pm) and the 1st men, racing in the Light IVs, competition start on Wednesday.

The 'Light IVs' is a small but prestigious division for IVs without a cox. The boats are instead steered by one of the crew via a special swivelling footplate. This is no mean feat on the narrow and twisty Cam...

19th Jun '04May Bumps Round upby DJH
The womens club had an outstanding set of bumps. Without a doubt they fielded the strongest squad we have had in a long time. The 3rd Women finished the week up 3, and were unlucky not to blade when Caius III hit Robinson II in front of them. No such problems for the 2nd Womens VIII who finished the week up 6 to earn their blades. A very good performance from the 1st Womens VIII as well saw them finish up 2 as sandwich boat in the 1st division, bumping Queens and Peterhouse in the process.

The mens club did not have such a good time of it, however there were a number of good performances for them as well. The fellows VIII did very well, despite finishing down 4 for the week, they managed to row over twice holding off Downing V to retain a permanent place on the river for our 6th VIII and hence the 6th VIII headship. The 5th boat did well and finished up 2 for the week, unlucky to have crews bump out in front but never threatened from behind. They did manage to take the 5th boat headship from Maggie. The 4th boat continued a fairly poor run of form to get hit every day this year. The 3rd boat promised much but unfortunately failed to deliver until the last day and finished down 2 for the week. A few more outings together and I think they could have performed very well. The 2nd Mens VIII are truly the outstanding performers for the mens club though, finishing 2nd in the 2nd division and 2nd highest 2nd VIII on the river just behind Caius. Given the number of triallists returning to Caius this is a huge achievement. Meanwhile the 1st Mens VIII had an interesting week, finishing level in the end. They were disappointingly bumped by Queens on day 2, but managed to reverse that result on day 3 and very nearly had the bump on Maggie on day 4 too - but were unfortunately undone by the robinson crew two in front. 8th May '04Concept 2 Sprint Relayby ipe
In Friday night's Concept 2 Sprint relay all participating crews from First and Third performed well.

The women's boat club entered two VIIIs, which came an impressive 2nd and 5th in their division.

The men also entered two VIIIs. The 1st VIII won the 1st division, a good sign for the coming term, and the 2nd VIII won the Lower division, beating several 1st boats and, more importantly, three crews from Maggie.

More information can be found in the results section.

Our very own JPD was in action for Goldie at the weekend, losing out to a more powerful Isis crew but holding on well through the middle of the race and coming back slightly towards the end to a margin of a length and a half in Isis' favour.

The blue boat went down by perhaps two thirds of a length after Oxford's very rapid start, but some aggressive steering and equally agressive bladework on the middlesex bend gave Cambridge a lead which only ever extended. By the end it was a comfortable win for Cambridge, but a dramatic race nonetheless.

4 FaT members were in action today in the women's and lightweights' boat races. Alas, all four finished on the losing side as Oxford again proved stronger in all five races. All the races with the exception of the Women's Blue Boat (the only one without FaT representation) were very close but in truth no Cambridge crew looked like winning. (6 replies...)
1st Mar '04Lent Bumps round upby DJH
First and Third entered 5 mens and 2 womens VIIIs into the Lent bumps this year.

While our 5th Mens VIII did not quite manage to get on, our 2nd womens VIII proved themselves to be quite a bit quicker than in recent years as one of the fastest of the 10 crews to get on. However they then failed to make the most of bumps by hitting the crews in front of them by the motorway bridge or just after on every day. While I am sure they were disappointed not to have the opportunity to race the whole course, they will still enjoy their blades none the less.

Our 4th Men also proved early speculation to be correct as they were faster than all crews around them. They have now cemented the 4th Mens VIII as the highest on the river, and likely to be the only 4th VIII with a guaranteed slot in next years races.

The 3rd Mens VIII had a bit more of a tough time of it, despite closing on the crew in front on the first day they were caught around grassy corner. This put them on a slippery slope and they were hit each day. However the final bump was a slightly dubious technical bump awarded after carnage in front, despite them reopening the margin on the crew behind to almost a length.

The 2nd Mens VIII have had a tough term, with an accident just before the Head of the Nene preventing them from racing in BP2 and denying them crucial water time. However for an inexperienced crew, they did very well to remain the 4th highest 2nd VIII on the river. They were only bumped once by a very large, if somewhat unrefined, CCAT crew.

The Womens 1st VIII was one of the strongest womens crews we have fielded for a while. Sadly they just missed out on capitalising on this on both day 1 and day 2 chasing a fairly quick Pembroke crew, coached by none other than our own RTT! On the 3rd day Pembroke hit a Queens crew on the slide downwards, thus denying our women the chance to correct the narrow misses on the previous two days. However Saturday the crew proved just how fast they were by bumping Queens just past the motorway bridge. So although a little disappointing, not a bad result for the women, and definitely something to build on for next term.

The Lent VIII was starting 2nd on the river and had Caius in front and Downing behind. What little pre-bumps indicators there were suggested that these were the three fastest crews in the division, but no one was quite sure in what order they would finish. Nerves were running high on day 1, particularly given that the Lent VIII was such an inexperienced crew. However once that gun went the crew rapidly settled into the racing mode we had trained for. This proved sufficient to open a large gap on Downing behind but unfortunately we failed to close on Caius in front. This proved the theme of the week, although an attempt on Friday to gear up and back our early race power resulted in an entertaining finish. We had again failed to hit Caius and blew at Ditton and while we had about a four length lead over Downing their race plan was slightly different. However despite them achieving overlap somewhere near Peters Posts we managed to pull away and cross the line with a small margin of clear water. We raced slightly more conservatively on Saturday and consequently showed Downing their true place cruising home several lengths clear. Overall quite a satisfying result, leaving it all to play for again next year!

W2 Got on! Didn't see the race, don't know their time, but they got on, say no more.

30th Nov '03FaT Novices Row Fastby mjb
Some fast FaT Novice crews raced in the Clare Novices. The 1st women's boat proved themselves the fastest crew around and were very unlucky not to make the final; the second boat won the plate competition. The men's first boat had an unfortunate crabbing incident which led to them encountering the bank whilst comfortably leading CCAT A and the second men dispatched Caius A and Corpus A before falling to a strong Clare A crew.
Full results and race reports are available in the Results section.
It's all looking rather rosy for Fairbairns.

In the Winter Head race, the First And Third Ladies IV came first in the 'Student Senior' category and second in ARA S4 behind UEA.
The 1st Novices followed this up by being the fastest college novices, coming second to Westminster (who've had a little bit longer rowing) and beating Maggie into 3rd place by 30s. The 2nd and 3rd Novices came 4th and 5th with about 2s separating them.

In the men's events, the 1st Novices came second behind Magdalene, whilst the seniors were 4th best Cam college, despite rowing the race with macon blades.

The inaugural Intra-Club Ergo challenge took place today with teams from the 3 IVs and an VIII from the novices. The Light IV won with 12:08.6 while the 2nd IV gave spirited opposition with 12:18.3. The pre-race favourites (1st IV) were hampered by the absence of an oarsman despite the efforts of Byrne who volunteered to make up by going 3 times. Special mention should be made for Chris Mycroft who pulled out a spectacular 1:24.7 and for Captain Dan who won the overall average award with 1:27.0 and 1:30.1. (3 replies...)

17th Jun '03May Term roundupby AHLF
First and Third was able to enter 7 men's and 3 women's crews into the May Bumps this year. Only Jesus managed as many and 8 of their 10 boats won spoons.

For the first time in a number of years, First and Third entered a Fellows' boat which rowed as the Men's 7th May VIII. On the first day they did not perform to the standards they had in training and were caught fairly swiftly by Peterhouse III. On the second day they were determined to make amends and they had a much better row. Unfortunately they were bumped again, this time by Emmanuel V but credit must go to them for a fine performance. On the final two days they rowed over comfortably ahead of St. Edmund's III and on Saturday they came well within a canvas of St. Catharine's V. It is wonderful to have Fellows' rowing for the Club. I hope they enjoyed it sufficiently to return next year.

The Grad VIII entered as the Men's 6th May VIII. They have worked hard, training together during the year, and their success was richly deserved. They bumped St. Catharine's IV, Caius V, Jesus V and Trinity Hall IV. I am delighted to award them their College blades.

The Men's 5th May VIII had a rather odd week. Starting immediately behind a Corpus III boat which did not turn up, they rowed past the station ahead to bump on the first day. On the second day, following an identical bump behind them, they were overbumped by LMBC V. The third day saw them chasing an absent Corpus III again whom they bumped for the second time. Sadly on the fourth day Corpus finally produced a very swift third boat and it bumped us back.

On the first day, after an encounter with Grassy corner, the Men's 4th May VIII were bumped by Trinity Hall III. They were subsequently bumped by Darwin II and overbumped by Christ's III. However, on the final day they salvaged their pride by rowing home comfortably ahead of Queen's III.

The Women's 3rd May VIII were formed only a few days before the GoR. Containing a number of Lent and May colours, great things were expected of them. They did not disappoint, making short work of Christ's II, Clare III, King's II and St. Edmund's. Despite the quality of the crew, bumping on all four days is still an achievement which the Club should applaud so I am very pleased to award them their College blades.

The Men's 3rd May VIII did well on the first day to escape from a strong Fitzwillilliam II who were desperately chasing the overbump. A pile-up on the second day saw a re-row with us being chased by a fast Magdalene II. Unfortunately they were too strong and we were bumped by the Plough. However, great credit must go to the crew for not giving up on the bumps. On Friday, they were again being chased by Fitz II and put in an awesome row to stay clear. On the final day they were rewarded with a bump on Downing III.

The Women's 2nd May VIII though very committed, were physically smaller than those around them so they were always going to have a difficult week. Their perfomances improved throughout the week, and although they were bumped by Darwin II, C lare Hall and Addenbroke's they showed great strength of character to row over on the fourth day despite four's seat getting stuck.

The 2nd May VIII started very high up thanks to a very fast crew last year. Defending the position was alwas going to be a challenge. On the first day, despite holding Emmanuel II to within a canvas from Grassy to the Railway bridge, they were unable to convert their advantage and were bumped by Peterhouse just before Morley's Holt. However, of all the performances I saw during the week, the row by this crew on Thursday was the best of them all. Wolfson were right on top of them halfway through Plough Reach. They were absolutely relentless and by the Railway bridge their bowball was level with our 7-man. However, thanks to some great pushes, a good line, and less than perfect coxing by the Wolfson boat we escaped. On Friday they were again chasing Emma II. They knew that this time there could be no mistake. Chased by LMBC II it was always going to be tough. Maggie closed quickly and were well inside a canvas coming into Grassy. However the Maggie cox steered for the bump too early. A great push in Plough Reach accompanied by the shouts from the massed FaT supporters in the Plough saw us take down Emma just before Ditton. On Saturday they put together another good row and Sidney Sussex were bumped on Grassy. This crew had worked very hard and was very committed and it richly deserved its rise up the table.

The Women's 1st May VIII were unlucky to be forced into a last minute substitution with Anna having to pull out through injury. However Sally kindly agreed to sub in and the crew rowed over on the first day. On the second day the crew put in a gutsy row and did well to hold off Darwin for so long. However, they finally succumbed by the Pink House. A row-over on Friday allowed us to chase CCAT on the final day whom we bumped just after Grassy.

I was a little worried about the May VIII at the start of term after losing 5 of the oarsmen in the Lent VIII. However, the return of two lightweight half-blues and one Granta colour combined with some hard training meant that we were ready to hold our own. However, whether we would be fast enough to bump was much less certain. Starting the on the first day behind a stacked St. Catharine's boat, we had little chance to bump. However the crew stayed comfortably ahead of Clare. Robinson held off Catz for just long enough to allow them to catch Jesus so we were chasing Catz again on the second day. Catz bumped Jesus, Queen's bumped Clare and on Thursday we were left to row over in glorious isolation at about 22. On the Friday we moved quickly on Jesus with Queen's never getting close. We got them just before Grassy. On the final day we were chasing Emmanuel. With 12 seconds to the gun Steph was horizontal on the stern canvas clinging on to the bung for dear life. However she kept us straight and another awesome row saw us hit Emma just after the railings. This is the first time the May VIII has gone up in 5 years - a fantastic achievement.

Congratulations to everyone on a great set of bumps. Many thanks to you all for such an enjoyable year. Best of luck to Dan and to next year's committee.

Don't know all the results, but the 3rd men and 4th men each won their first round. Also the 2nd men won the plate after being DQ'd against Peterhouse for steering near the finish, having beaten them by a length. Amusingly Peterhouse went on to lose narrowly in the final, which makes our 2nd men the fastest M2 crew. Awesome work.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd men's VIIIs all won their categories at the City Rowing Club organised 500m sprint regatta on Sunday. The cream of the club's rowing talent also walked off with a leisurely win in the coxed IVs event.

Although the City Sprints is not the largest event of the term, the results reflect a good start to the term's training and bode well. Full details are to be found in the Results section - thank you to everyone for updating it.

3rd Mar '03Lent Bumps round-upby AHLF
This term FaT were able to put out 5 men's VIIIs and 2 women's VIIIs.

The 5th Men's VIII and 2nd Women's VIII both put in very creditable performances in the Getting-on-Race, but sadly failed to qualify.

The 4th Men had a very good, though ultimately slightly annoying week. On the first day they bumped up from Head of the 4th division, after rowing over. They then bumped on their second and third days, leaving them on track for blades. They were closing down Sidney II ahead of them, but had a slight incident with the bank, and fell victim to the over-bump from Caius III. However, we are still one of only two clubs with a 4th boat on the river. LMBC IV was considerably below us and won spoons...

The 3rd Men showed themselves to be very competent early on in term. They always knew they were fast, and so it was no surprise when they bumped on the first 2 days inspite of Clare II's best efforts to block the river. On the third day they were left all alone, with the boats behind them impeded by Clare II and the boats in front of them all having bumped out. On the final day another piece of river-blocking from Clare II resulted in a technical row-over even though they had gained on Pembroke II.

The 2nd Men had perhaps the hardest job of all of our crews. Starting behing a very fast LMBC II crew and in front of a ludicrously lowly placed Peterhouse I, it was never going to be easy. They held Peterhouse at a canvas from before Grassy, but finally succumbed just round Ditton. On the second day they rowed over comfortably ahead of King's setting them up to chase a very slow Downing on the third day. Unfortunately disaster struck. They were blown by a gust of wind with 5 seconds to go, and went straight into the bank while King's rowed past. On the last day they closed on King's but it was never going to be enough to get them before they got Downing. Fate was not kind to the 2nd Men, but they can take comfort from the fact that they are without doubt the second best 2nd boat on the river.

The 1st Women had not really had a chance to prove themselves before the bumps. However they were very keen and met the challenge head-on. They put in a good row on the first day. Sidney bumped Catz behind them and they were never in any danger from the sandwich-boat. Ahead Girton were always just a bit too far away. On the second day the Sidney cox left his life-jacket at the boathouse, so Catz were awarded a technical bump. Again FaT rowed over comfortably, though with a little less determination than the first day. The third day was almost a carbon copy of the first with Sidney again bumping Catz. By this time the crew was getting a little bored of rowing over... The fourth day saw them chasing New Hall who were facing spoons. A very powerful effort from FaT saw New Hall bumped opposite the Plough. Sidney were nowhere. This is the first time in 5 years that FaT W1 have gone up in the Lents. Congratulations.

M1 have been looking fast all term. They won the Head to Head, Head of the Nene as S3, and Robinson Head. The question was never were they faster than the other crews, but were they faster by enough. An overhead crab on the first day when only 1/4 length off LMBC left us limping home holding Emma off with no difficulty, but unable to close on LMBC. On the second day they made ammends and hit LMBC just after Ditton. They were now chasing Caius who were Head. The plan on the 3rd day was to race the course at our own pace. It didn't work. The rowing was by no means the best they have produced and they never closed inside distance. They knew something special would be required on the final day. A tremendous start saw the gap from Caius down to 1/3 length around Grassy. Sadly it was just too much to ask, and FaT began to fade a little into the reach. At the same time Caius put in a huge push. They closed slightly at the end, but Caius finished comfortably ahead. It was a great effort by the fastest College boat on the Cam, but sadly not quite enough.

Well done to everyone. I had a great week, and I hope you enjoyed yourselves too. Things look good for the Mays...
7th Feb '03FaT win Robinson Head !by mjb
The Lent VIII won comfortably, beating Headship holders Caius by a margin of 1s and dispatching the rest of the field with ease.
The 2nd VIII lost out to a crew from LMBC, but beat no fewer than five first boats, finishing in a creditable 9th place; the 3rd VIII were the fastest 3rd VIII - beating a host of 2nd boats and finshed 16th overall. The 4th VIII came 30th, the only 4th boat to enter the race.
The Women's VIII finished 12th in their division.

We had two crews competing in Saturday's Head2Head timetrial organised by Cambridge City Rowing Club.

The men's 1st VIII posted the fastest time of the day. Caius, starting Head in the Lent Bumps, went faster on the first leg of the two part race but were dispatched on the second to finish 10 seconds down overall.

The 2nd VIII finished well relative to other 2nd boats (beaten only by the matched crews of LMBC) and finished in the middle of the crews due to be racing around them in the 2nd division of the Lent Bumps.

23rd Nov '02FaT WIN Emma Sprints by RJN
The 2nd VIII won Emma Sprints in style. The first race consisted of a small head start for our opposition (which bow 4 decided to ignore). We were winning too easily so we raced against them in IVs for msjority of the course. The second round saw us face some Emma Novices, similar tactics were used, although bow pair took on the 8 Emma novices for a good few strokes, and managed to hold them off. Our third race was a grudge match, as we took on the Pembroke boat that took out the other Trinity Crew. We beat them too. In the final we took on the might of Clare's mixed crew. It was a slightly closer race, but we still won easily. What can I say, we had the sticks of power on our side!
17th Nov '02Winter Head Resultsby mcp
Several 1st and 3rd crews raced in the Cambridge Winter Head on Saturday. Our results may be found here.

The 1st men's VIII, with their sights set on the Fairbairns, were 2nd fastest college behind Caius. The 1st novice men and both women's novice crews rowed - experiences which will be really useful for the Clare Novices and Novice Fairbairns.

The 1st women's IV also entered and, joined by some recent leavers (members of the 'old boys' club - Black Prince Boat Club), won Senior 3 VIIIs. (1 reply...)

Congratulations to the Men's 2nd 4+ on their victory today, and on their winning the competition. Yet another indication that there are great things in store for us this year...
19th Aug '02Commonwealth Regattaby jpd
Emily Booker, rowing in the English Women's Lightweight Quad, won a gold medal. They beat Wales by two lengths, who beat Northern Ireland by a similar margin. Simon Knight was also racing in the Welsh Men's Eights, but unfortunately was not so successful. Congratulations to them both, hopefully forging the path for others from the club on to the international rowing scene. (1 reply...)
19th Jun '02May Bumpsby mcp
The results for all our crews can be found in full on the May Bumps results page. Our top crews performed well - the May VIII stayed level at 9th, whilst the 2nd, 3rd and 5th VIIIs all rose comfortably. The women's 1st VIII went up 1.
Many of the lower crews suffered, but the club is proud of everyone's efforts - most notably those of the 4th VIII - who remained the highest 4th VIII on the river - and the 6th VIII who avoided spoons with a gutsy and exciting row on the final day.

Well done to everyone involved. Watch this space for photos and other additions including the famous 2nd VIII song! (1 reply...)

2nd VIII in MS4 8+
With John Earl and Joe Grundy subbing for Matt Byrne and Hugh Colvin/Martin Peck
In our heat we had a strong row to come second to Emma I (the Head Crew) by only 1 second in a time of 3:09 (only 3 seconds off the MS4 8+ course record)! Heat winners went straight into the Final, second place to the repercharge. In the repercharge, we again had a good row, although not as aggressive as in the first race. We lost to Winchester School.
Stern IV in MN 4+
In the largest event of the day with 20 entries
Our heat was our first race of the day. We had a very good start and surged to a very smooth 38. After 300m we were 2 lengths up on our opposition, at which point the rate dropped and we held our lead to win our heat in 3:37.
In the semi, with two crews going through to the final, and with Will and I trebling up, we had decided that if we were a comfortable second after 500m we would just aim to hold that. In the race, despite being second at 500m we pushed through our opposition to take the lead. At 750m, they had obviously taken the rate down to save themselves for the final. We followed their change to remain about a length in front.
In the final, as in our heats, we lost ground off the start. At 500m Sam told us we were rowing through them, and despite two near-boatstopping incidents between then and the line we pushed all the way to take the win in 3:24 (the course record for MN 4+).
MS4 4+
In the heat (from Cox): Sam Adams, Henry Clouting, Will Thorne, Maris Goldmanis, Dan Walker. Jon Davies for Henry Clouting in the repercharge.
I didn't see the heat, but from what I could gather the crew had a technical row to claim second, and a place in the repercharge.
The repercharge was not a great race - we had jumped straight from the VIII to the IV, with Will and I having done the MN 4+ just before that. The boat felt very heavy, and at 600m it was obvious we were out of contention, so we took the rate down to save ourselves.

14th May '02Successes at the weekendby mcp
Congratulations to the third men's VIII who won pots (handsome glass bottomed pewter tankards) at the Cam sprints on Sunday. Success was also enjoyed by John and Neil in a pair, and Sarah and Sally who rowed with recent club leavers in a IV.
First and Third was also represented in the Head2Head (John Earl in his single scull!), and at Bedford on Saturday, where the women's 1st VIII and the men's 2nd VIII gained yet more race experience. (2 replies...)
7th May '02Beginning of term racingby mcp
The Head of the Cam and Nottingham City Regatta were both last weekend. Our men's 2nd VIII travelled to Nottingham and enjoyed some exciting side by side racing, and was also pleased to post better times than Downing II.
The men's lower boats squad fielded two crews for the Head of the Cam in Cambridge, and the women's squad, one.
Our website has been updated with all the relevant results.
9th Mar '02Womens Head of the Riverby mcp
Because of yet more gusty winds, the Women's Head of the River Race, which our 1st women's VIII travelled down to row in today, has been cancelled.
It is a great shame particularly since college women's crews never usually have the chance to row it, because it often clashes with the final day of the Lent Bumps.
4th Mar '02The Lentsby mcp
The Lent Bumps last week saw a good deal of success for 1st & 3rd.
The men's 1st VIII saw its first bump in Lents or Mays in two years. It turned itself around after dropping to both Caius and Maggie, to end up third on the river - down just one place after bumping Emmanuel on Saturday. The other men's crews also performed well, rising two or more despite loosing a day's racing due to heavy winds.

Unfortunately, luck did not go the way of the women's 1st VIII - which was hampered by obstruction ahead for most of the week and overall also fell one. The women's 2nd VIII enjoyed themselves by rising a well earned two places in their three days.

Our website has descriptions of all the races and plenty of pictures of our crews and other boats on the river. Many thanks to Richard Spencer, Jonathan Davies and Chris Stone for providing most of them - and there are more to follow soon.

There are also some pictures from the Boat Club Dinner and bop - thank you jpd.
22nd Feb '02Getting-on-Race by arr
Two women's crews, the 2nd and 3rd VIIIs both competed in the Getting-on-Race this afternoon, racing other college lower boats to try and win places in the Lent Bumps next week.

The 2nd VIII, who have been performing to a high level recently, had a very controlled row, despite a slight incident approximately 15 strokes from the end. Their race was well together and powerful, and showed good potential for the remainder of this term, and next.

The 3rd VIII, who until last night didn't exist, and only today had their first outing (the race), had a brilliant row, including a nice little scrap with a Christs men's VIII about 100m from the finish line. RTT, complete with CULRC lycra, showed surprising competency in his coxing, and steered a good line around the corners, helping his crew to register a very respectable time.

Well done to all those who raced today, especially the 3rd VIII, many of whom were dragged in at short notice! (1 reply...)

Congratulations must go to the women's 2nd VIII who missed penants by a mere 4 seconds yesterday - beating the men's crew and finishing just 8 seconds behind the 1st VIII... an impressive performance.
I'll add the results to our site tomorrow, but the official results are here. (1 reply...)
16th Feb '02Pembroke Regattaby mcp
Having watched most of the day's races, I have uploaded details of our crews' performances in today's Pembroke Regatta. Head to "Results" to see them.
Note that at present all the reports and opinions are my own and are not officially endorsed; if you wish to make any additions or changes simply use the feedback page!

Whilst it hasn't been the most spectacularly successful day, watching the races from the towpath is brilliant fun - well worth the trip if you are ever able to.
30th Jan '02Cambridge Winter Leagueby mcp
As promised, the details of our performance in the Cambridge Winter League have been added. The crew of last term's novices had a good result - finishing not much more than a minute behind the 1st boat and beating all six Novice category entries.
As usual, head to "Results" to see them.
29th Jan '02Head 2 Headby mcp
I have updated the site with some details of the weekend's racing. To see them simply choose "Results" on the main menu.

Whilst it would be foolish to draw too many conclusions this early in term, in terrible conditions the women's 1st VIII put in a brilliant time and hinted there may be plenty to look forward to in the weeks to come. The men's squad crews performed acceptably considering the weather and equipment difficulties.
More details of the Cambridge Winter League will follow when I can get through to their website!
6th Dec '01UEA Challengeby jwe
On Wednesday (December 5), the novice men went to Norwich to compete with the novice crews of the University of East Anglia, and of Churchill College, at UEA's invitation. They raced over a 1.5km course. They beat both UEA crews; the timing result for Churchill's row was a bit questionable, but Churchill seem to have won overall.
30th Nov '01Senior Fairbairnsby mcp
More details will follow, but its been a good day for Trinity, with the 1st men's VIII coming in as 3rd college VIII (equal with Maggie), the 1st men's IV coming 2nd, the 1st women's IV coming 4th, and the old boys crews performing phenomenally finishing only 2s behind Emmanuel and Downing (beating our 1st VIII by 8s) and as highest placed 2nd VIII respectively.
(The winners of the wine, and a few more details, will be seen to later.)
30th Nov '01Novice Fairbairnsby rjn
The 1st novice women came 5th in the novice fairbairns yesterday, keeping up the good novice women's results in the club for the last 3 years. The 1st novice women, abandoning the war paint, and unfortunatly a crew member down (note to future lower boats captains: ask all novices if they have any compulsary trips to the Tate Art Gallery on the day of novice Fairbairns before picking crews) raced a good solid race yesterday. Stealing the stroke of the 2nd novice VIII (who'd already raced the course once), and putting her on bowside, the 1st VIII were ready to go. Tom had the 'great' idea of going for a quick paddle before the race, pushing off 5 minutes before we were suppossed to be marshalling the marshals went crazy. After a good few minutes of '1st + 3rd what are you doing?' (classic quote of the day: Marshal to a Queens novice boat: 'Queens, what are you doing?', Queens: 'we don't know') and '1st + 3rd you'll be disquallified if you don't spin and go back NOW' (Tom: 'don't worry, keep rowing'), they came back to to the boathouse and marshalled. Going off behind LMBC they had a good start and were looking comfortable across the course. There were no major disasters in the boat. The 7 strong bankparty however had a bit of a problem with a truck blocking the whole road - meaning that the 1st VIII got a few strokes of rowing without a crazed shouting from the bank distracting them. The girls rowed a focussed and powerful race. Despite a number of them almost throwing up on the finish line were still in good spirits at and managed to sing all the way back to the boat house. They pissed off Downing the most, changing the lyrics of 'we'd rather be at Oxford than St Johns', to 'we'd rather be at Oxford than at Downing'. Loving the controversy this caused they sang other 'adapted' versions at Robinson and Jesus (after telling them that Jesus would add 10 secs to our time if they didn't stop singing they sang 'we'd rather be at Jesus than at Oxford') but manged to get back to the boat house alive.
They (and the club) should be proud of what they acheived in less than ideal circumstances yesterday. I certainly am.
24th Nov '01Clare Novice Regattaby mcp
What a day! Both women's crews won their way to their semi-finals, and the men's 2nd boat performed v. well too. Disaster for the men's 1st boat in the 1st round, but clearly great potential to do extremely well next week.

I have added some descriptions based on what I saw today to the Clare Novices Results page, and hope to add a few pictures soon - hopefully by Monday night. If anyone has anything to add or alter, please email me.
23rd Nov '01Clare Novice Regattaby mcp
The 2nd women's novice boat won their way through two rounds of the clare novices today. In their first race they dispatch Jesus C easily - even gaining 1/2 length's lead after 2 or 3 strokes.
Unfortunately, errors by the start marshalls meant we crashed in to the tow path side bank off the start against Caius in the next race. The ensuing panic resulted in a number of further encounters with the river bank and gave our opponents a lead of about half the reach (a conservative estimate).
However, some brilliant rowing and numerous disasters in the opposing boat meant that by the time both crews got going together Caius were just one length up!
The girls then had the excitement of a nail-biting side by side race through the railway bridge and to the finish... to a final verdict of a win by ~ 1/4 of a length!!!
17th Nov '01Novice Men Win!by jpd
The Men's Novices stormed the Winter Head today, (almost) sweeping the (novice) board.

The 1st Men's Novice VIII came 2nd in M Stu Beg 8+ (losing to Westminster School), in a time of 10:34 (faster than last year's 1st VIII!).

The 2nd Men's Novice VIII came 9th in M Stu Beg 8+, the second fastest college 2nd VIII (losing by 3 seconds to LMBC II). They crashed at Grassy (not Peter Brandt stylee), and were 9 seconds quicker than LMBC II over the second half of the course. They clocked a time of 11:23 (they lost an estimated 18 seconds in the crash, which would have put them in front of LMBC I!).

The 3rd Men's Novice VIII came equal 15th (with a Kings College London boat), the fastest (and only) 3rd VIII, beating Magdalene II and Jesus II in a time of 12:13.

The 4th Men's Novice VIII came 17th, in a superb time of 12:23 (only 10s slower than the 3rd VIII).

The 1st Women's Novice VIII came 5th of the Cambridge colleges (behind LMBC, Pembroke, Christ's and Magdalene) in 12:35.

The 2nd Women's Novice VIII came 9th in their category, in a time of 13:58.

The 1st Men's VIII won ARA Novice 8+, in a time of 8:59 (their second race), and came 4th in Student Senior 8+, behind Kings College London, Emma/LMBC composite and Jesus, in a storming time of 8:42.

The 2nd Men's VIII came 7th in Student Novice 8+, in 9:32.

A big thanks from the MLBCs to all coaches, subs, bank parties etc. who have enabled these fantastic results.

The results from today's racing are out - here. Since most of us are away training tomorrow, for a full summary of our performances and pictures and stuff check back late tomorrow or Monday.
A quick scan shows the 1st novice men going fastest of all novice crews, the women's novices coming 5th, and the men's 1st VIII posting the 5th fastest college time in a closely fought battle... a result we fully intend to improve on in Fairbairns... Any other stats, anyone? (2 replies...)
15th Nov '01Queens Ergsby RN
5 1st + 3rd boats raced at Queens Ergs. All of whom looked menacing in their Extermin VIII t-shirts. Jonny Boy, who we 'won' last year, also made an appearance to support the novice women of 2001.
The 1st novice women were the first 1st + 3rd crew 'race' (if thats an appropriate word?). We decided to enter the newly chosen fixed crews into the competition, and not just the best erg times. This makes their performance is even more credible. They came 3rd in their heat, with p.b's from over half the crew. A p.b by at least 2 seconds was put in by bow girl Hannah Barry, despite her falling off her seat. It was a strained heat, with new rules (that we didn't know about) put in and taken out again within about 5 mins (when the computer system worked and then broke down!).
We met the 2nd VIII at Great Gate (after a break for pizza), and used this opportunity to tell the 1st VIII that they had got through to the final - coming 8th overall.
There were also fantastic performances form the 2nd VIII. Being a rower down, the amazing Emily Chappell offered to do 2 500m pieces for us. She gave everything for her first one, collapsing off the erg, only to get back on a few minutes later to put in another respectable performance.
The 1st VIII's final was at 10.00, and was delayed (meaning that the beautiful and diligent women's lower boats captains had been at Queens for over 5 hours).
As the standard this year was so high, we decided that our aim for the evening was to come top 5, which would mean moving up significantly from 8th. Fantastic perfomances were put in by everybody, Hannah pulled 1.53 (managing to stay on her seat this time!), Nonny pulled her first sub 1.50. Everyone gave it everything. We don't know the official results, but we finished 3rd.
The boys did well, with the 1st VIII getting to the final, coming 7th overall.
Photos will be on the website soon. (1 reply...)

Most unfortunately, at short notice the Light IV is unable to make our race this afternoon, and all possibilities of subs or rescheduling it have been explored without success.
With all the crew now at 'full fitness', it is a great shame to be missing the opportunity to see to what extent we could have improved upon the weekend's performance.

Get out and support the 2nd men's IV at 2pm - they are now our soul crew still in the hunt for glory in the Uni IVs and are up against Christ's II. (1 reply...)

Four of the club's six senior IVs were due to race on Monday, but two went straight through to the 2nd round when their opposition scratched.
Meanwhile, the 1st women's IV cruised through their first round against Magdalene, winning comfortably by 3 lengths, but sadly came up against the powerful Peterhouse in their 2nd round, and the men's 3rd coxed IV met Catz II, and both crews have been knocked out.

The men's and the women's 1st coxed IVs both came 4th in the college IVs events in the Cambridge Autumn Head on Saturday. The 2nd IVs also performed creditably, placing in the middle of their events. Meanwhile the renegade Coxless IV proved yet again that training, outings and coaching do actually help - or perhaps just that coxes are worth their weight, after crashing on the reach!
Special mention should also be made of our men's novice crew (crew and results to follow shortly) who not only completed the course but beat plenty of crews too. (3 replies...)
22nd Sep '01Oxford City Bumpsby gf
After a hiatus which lasted many decades (excepting only a one-off anniversary event in the mid-60s), last year the Oxford City Bumps returned from the dead.

This year, thanks to the efforts of SJB, BPBC turned up with two scratch IVs. In keeping with our usual randomness, our coxes were from Emma and New Hall. Racing was under Torpids rules.

The nominally "first" IV (CCSI, JPB, AJH, GF) was pretty agricultural and opened with a row-over 1/4 of a length off our old adversaries, Merton Gannets. Meanwhile, the other crew (CWEP, DEM, SJB, JPD) dispatched an aged CORC crew in no time.

Second time out, the chasing BPBC crew destroyed us off the start. In an instant, they had closed to just a few feet off our stern. Push for push, we held them there for what seemed like ages, then eventually had to concede the bump and with it first boat status.

We then switched the tractor beam on to the Gannets and hit them just before the line, keeping our crew level, with the others being up two from one race.

Race 3: dull row-overs.

Finally, the crew that had become the 2nd IV was chased by a worryingly rapid CORC effort. They hit us emphatically, but we discovered later that this was only after both of our crews had rowed past a crashed IV which had started third (and due to that crash finished last).

So: Having started 5th and 7th, we finished the other way round in 3rd and 4th. Headship next year? Well, IC hold it for now and are no soft touch. Anyway, the "second" crew went up four, and hence can claim discretionary blades. One problem...

We now need to decide what our blades look like!

BTW, welcome today to our latest random ringer, Jim Brooks - a Gannet who was in the crew finishing second - he'll be joining us for the HOTC in October, along with FaT-coaching Maggie buftie Paul Alexander. (3 replies...)
