| The Cambridge Channel Challenge sponsored by Deloitte, a charity race. This summer First and Third are competing in The Cambridge Channel Challenge: a rowing race between half-a-dozen boats from colleges of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge aiming to support the charities Cancer Research UK and the University Sports Complex. It will take place after the 19th June dependant upon favourable weather conditions. The inaugural Cambridge Channel Challenge was launched in December 2004 and is organised by members of the Lady Margeret Boat Club of St. John's College, Cambridge. The race will start at Shakespeare Beach in Dover and will finish when the first rower steps onto French sand, after more than 5 hours of intense rowing. The English Channel separates England from Europe by 21 miles and is well known for being one of the world's most challenging stretches of water for ocean rowers. The row will be tough: side by side racing for over five hours in variable conditions- it will make any Cam based race look like a gentle Sunday afternoon paddle! This will also be a two fold Guinness world record attempt, for the fastest time and for the greatest number of crews competing. | The following were elected as officers of the 2005/6 Committee of First and Third Trinity Boat Club at the elections on Sunday 22 May 2005. Overall Captain: Pia Schaefer. Men's Captain: Rachel Munro. Women's Captain: Pia Schaefer. Secretary: Dan Jane. Junior Treasurer: Honey Duan. Kit and Social Secretary: Amelia Russell. Men's Lower Boats Captains: Tom Andrews, Albert Cheung, Seb Pancratz, James Scott (joint team). Women's Lower Boats Captains: Clair Birbeck, Katie Birley, Harriet Booker, Damilola Dauda (joint team). Coxing Captain: Magnus Jones. Webmaster: Catherine Aiken. Many congratulations to them all, and thanks to those who voted. | First and Third now have their very own webshop where you can help raise money for FaT when shopping online through Amazon, John Lewis, M&S, Oddbins and many other retailers. All you need to do is go to our webshop and then click through to the retailer's website and make your purchase. A commission of between 1 and 10% will then be paid straight to FaT and can go towards subsidising social events and dinners. | ||

| We now have a selection of new boats to squeeze into the boathouse. A new Lola coxless IV replaces Mary Gwyneth who sadly met her end at the end of Peterborough rowing lake 2 years ago. A new 'elite' novice VIII has arrived to help ease the strain on Peter Brandt and Titan during novice term. In addition, we also now have a coastal IV, which will be of immense value in the coaching of novices; it is a wide stable boat but will give novices much of the usual benefit of outings in IVs. It will also be useful for seniors during technical outings. Both boats are made by Burgashell. The coastal IV will probably even get used to take FaT across the channel as part of the Cambridge Channel Challenge organised by LMBC! (3 replies...) | ||

| Congratulations to First and Third oarsman Alla Doubrovina who beat Oxford by 2 1/3 lengths at the Henley varsity races on Saturday. Alla, who noviced at Trinity in 2002, rowed at bow in the women's Blue boat. Alex Summers, president of the men's lightweights club, was the other FaT oarsman in the weekend's races against Oxford. Alex, rowing at 2, sadly suffered his third consecutive defeat with CULRC. | Further to Iain's post of the 1st of June, congratulations to Andrew Fisher, club Captain in 2002-2003, who was invited to stand for the post of CUBC Honorary Secretary and has taken on this important role for 2004-2005. Extraordinarily, this means that 2 of the 3 Honorary Secretaries this year are First and Third. The "Hon Sec's" are responsible for most of the day to day organisation of rowing and the official CUCBC races on the Cam. We can surely look forward to not only better run races but, one hopes, even fewer fines! ;-) | ||

| As the new KSS, I feel it's my responsibility to get people looking forward to a new year of bopping, formalling, and other fun activities. Please sign up on the Social 04/05 list if you want to hear about any of these fantastic events. This term, the main events on the calender are the Fresher's Cocktails, Club Formal [provisionally 9th Oct], the boathouse BBQ, the Fireworks party, a Novice-Senior Formal, and of course the end of term carnage that is the post dinner Fairbairns bop! Of course there will be the obligatory formals against rival boat clubs - let me know your particular favourites/most hated rivals. This is mainly working on the timetable from last year, so if there's anything [sporting events, meals out, trips, more drunken foolery - you get the idea] you would like to see added, please let me know asap, and I'll do my best to organise it. | As people will be aware, there is currently no webmaster for the coming academic year. We need somewhere in college for the webserver to live. If you read this and are living in a set in college next year, please consider volunteering to have it in your room. - The main responsibility is to keep it plugged in & switched on and restart it very occasionally as the need arises. - It is a normal sort of PC (but without a screen) in a tallish tower style case. - If you have your own computer you can still use the internet etc. Secondly, we need somebody who wants to learn some basic Linux skills to help keep the PC up-to-date. Like any computer, the webserver occasionally needs security patches & needs somebody to liase with college. This doesn't need to be the same person who is looking after the computer. Iain and I are both happy to stay involved to help with backup, support and tuition as required. Iain had no linux or programming experience when he took on the job - all that's really needed is a desire to learn about it. Ideally, you might have thought about taking on the webmaster committee position! As Iain will testify, being webmaster is a great opportunity to learn about writing web pages in html and, if you want, to develop some computer programming and sql database skills. These are valuable skills sought after in the big wide world and make a fine addition to any CV alongside a cambridge degree and rowing! Take the credit for running the world's best rowing club website... Keeping the site up-to-date with all the club's news and results ensures our website remains famous as the best club site out there - and in reality is very little work from day to day. It is great fun running something used so regularly by the hundreds of past and present members. | Congratulations to Steph Richards who coxed Leander to victory in the prestigious Ladies Plate at Henley on Sunday. They won against Harvard by 3/4 of a length. The Ladies Plate is the top event for club crews; it is the 2nd event for VIIIs, beneath the Grand which is for national crews. Steph novice coxed with First and Third in 1999 and was cox of Goldie in 2002. Simon B has posted a photo from JET and also sent me this amusing link. (2 replies...) | ||

| For the forseeable future all email addresses ending @firstandthird.org will not work. I have been instructed to stop this function by the Computer Office. The Trinity Computer officers will not allow the website to resume normal service until it can be proved that the group mail lists do not contravene any University rules. | In a very enjoyable ceremony today the Prince of Wales came to college to name our new coxed IV. A large number of current and former boat club members going back to the 1950s turned out for the ceremony. Peter Brandt, the Boat Club President, opened the ceremony by expressing the clubs delight that the Prince of Wales, a former member of Trinity, took the time to come and name our boat. The Prince responded in kind, and declared the boat be called "The Prince of Wales", pouring champagne over the bows to mark the occasion. After the ceremony, the Prince of Wales managed to talk to almost everyone present. Including the current Boat Club committee, a host of former captains, and many of the new novice intake. All those who I spoke to after the event were thrilled to have had a chance to meet the Prince, and many strained to make sure they didnt miss out, as evidenced by the marks on Will's hand from holding the rope! A few pictures have been posted in the photo gallery, and more will be posted soon so keep your eyes peeled. A special thanks must go out to the Junior Bursar, Porters and Clerk of Works for helping to make the ceremony run so smoothly and get it all set up. | ||

| Our new coxless pair arrived today, it is currently still in wrappers but will be operational by the end of this week or early next week. We will call the boat Amartya Sen in honour of the Master of College. The official naming ceremony will be later this year at an as yet unspecified date, but hopefully before he leaves! | ||

| Could all people interested in rowing for the Mens squad this term, at whatever commitment level, please come to a meeting in E1 GC at 18:00 on Sunday 28 September. I will discuss the training plan and times with you then and arrange sessions for this week. I expect to select the light four later that week and the 1st/2nd coxed fours the week after. I will discuss selection criteria at the meeting. If you cannot attend then it is essential that you get your availabilities for the week to me and that you speak to me as soon after the meeting as possible. | ||

| The Rules of the RTT Regatta
1. That this be a side by side regatta in single sculls. 2. That the course be 500m from the second post upstream of Ditton Corner to the first winning post of the Colquhoun sculls. 3. That this race take place annually on my birthday (18th April), or the nearest public holiday. 4. That anyone who is my friend be qualified to compete. 5. That entries be free of charge. 6. That the appointment of umpires, presentation of prizes and the resolution of all disputes be at the sole discretion of RTT. 7a. That the draw be made by me on the afternoon of the regatta. 7b. That the first round draw be entirely biased towards amusing combinations of competitors. 7c. That the second and subsequent rounds be selected randomly. 7d. That the order of races be determined by me. 8. That two boats only start in one race, each boat to abide by its own accidents. 9. That in the event of a dead heat the course be re-rowed immediately in the opposite direction. 10a. That in the event of a competitor falling in, a pint of bitter be presented to the me at the Maypole that evening. 10b. That in the event of me falling in, a pint of bitter / lager presented to each competitor at the Maypole that evening. 10c. That in the event of a competitor causing me to fall in, the competitor present a pint of bitter / lager to each other competitor at the Maypole that evening. 11. That the winner be required to attempt to swap his blades over before collecting the prize. 12a. That any competitor wishing to do so may attempt to swap their blades over, with the best attempt or fastest successful attempt qualifying for a pint of bitter / lager from me at the Maypole that evening. 12b. That competitors in this sub-event be exempt from rule 10 for the duration of their attempt. 13a. That in the event of an American or Frenchman winning, this regatta cease to be held. 13b. That in the event of a coxswain winning, I go out in a 4+ ten times before being allowed out in a real boat again. 14. That Eton Boy wear a red sunhat whilst competing. 15. That any President of a University club who loses to a woman, be required to repeat the course wearing nothing but gold socks and other clothes (if any) at the sole discretion of his adversary. 16. | The campaign for the Lent Bumps begins here!The camp, between 6th and 12th January will involve plenty of work in sweep oared small boats (pairs and fours) to increase awareness of the movement of boats, and will also include outings in sculling boats, such as doubles and quads. There will also be an opportunity to learn how to structure erg tests to get the most out of your potential when these are used next term. The camp will be a brilliant chance to get some training done before selection for the Lent Eights begins and is strongly recommended for anyone wishing to try for the 1st VIII. | Before the start of the Lent Term, there will be a training camp on the Cam for senior men interested in a seat in the 1st or 2nd Lent VIIIs. Everyone whom this concerns should have received a letter about this at the end of last term, but this is a reminder.
