The manifestos that have been received are now available on the elections page.

There are as yet no candidates for the posts of Women's Captain, Secretary and Junior Treasurer. These are all vital positions for the running of the club, so if you have not stood for a position but have the necessary skills then please strongly consider standing.

This year's elections will be held this Sunday 20 May at 7pm in the Winstanley Lecture Theatre. (12 replies...)

3rd Apr '07Charlie Allenby bjg
As many of you will already be aware, Charlie Allen died last Tuesday morning following a long battle with cancer.

Charlie arrived at Trinity in 2004 with a fine coxing pedrigee, having been Captain of Boats at Radley and having coxed for GB Juniors. After coxing briefly at the start of his time here, he decided to devote his energies to coaching, being particularly involved with the women's side of the club. Highlights of his coaching career include the infamous 'Up 6' Women's Lent VIII of 2005 and two strong 2nd Women's VIIIs in 2006.

Charlie's style was ruthless and uncompromising. In Lent 2006 he moulded Dom Hockley into a cox in his own image, leading to disqualification in Pembroke Regatta. For Charlie, this was merely a sign that Dom was learning the correct, aggressive approach to coxing - as his race report states, 'Dom, I am sooooo proud of you'. This was soon followed by the sinking of Downing in the Lent Bumps.

I will always remember the last time I was coxed by Charlie as a typical illustration of his attitude. He was subbing into the coxed IV last Michaelmas and we were doing a practice piece around the corners. Within a few strokes the rudder had snapped off but, undeterred by this, Charlie still steered between two crews and around First Post Corner using only his hands and expletives before finally giving up.

Charlie was heavily involved in drama, variously starring in, directing and producing plays including the Dryden Society's most recent production of The Country Wife. He was also an occasional speaker at the Magpie and Stump comedy debating society. He was a colourful and likeable character, and was well-known around college. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

Charlie had planned to make a return to coxing in the Lents, but was unfortunate to be prevented from doing so by his worsening health. Despite his lack of involvement, he maintained a keen interest in and support for the club.

There will be a memorial service for friends and family in Warminster on Friday 13 April, and another in Trinity Chapel on Saturday 28 April at 2.30pm, which everyone is welcome to attend. If you need more details of these services, or would like to pass a message to his family or make a donation in Charlie's name, then please get in touch with Lynsey Porter (lkp25). (1 reply...)

15th Feb '07BumpIT!by bjg
BumpIT is back - click here to play!

This is our bumps predictions game, launched this time last year. The rules (unchanged since the Mays) are explained on the main page, with details of the scoring system (for those that are fussed) in the Leaderboard section. There are two versions of the game: 4-day, for predicting the complete men's or women's bumps charts, and Daily, for predicting each of the five days of the Lent Bumps.

Prizes will be awarded to the Lents 2007 BumpIT Champions: hoodies for the 4-day competitions and T-shirts for the Daily ones, so if you're running short on clothes then get that entry in!

Please note that, for now, the bottom ten men's and women's crews are those that finished bottom last year. These will be altered after the Getting-on Race, at which point you may wish to change your predictions.

If you are not already logged in, then you can log in to play using your normal website username and password. If you're not sure what I mean by this, then please get in touch at webmaster at firstandthird.org.

Finally, apologies to Will who entered before the official start of BumpIT and was therefore deleted. It's the only way he'll learn. (8 replies...)

21st Jun '06FaT end year solidly!by pks
After a very promising Mich and Lent term, First and Third braved the waters of the Cam despite all vicious constraints inherent in Cambridge exam terms. This led to thoroughly sound performances all around and a lot of fun for all those involved behind the scenes, in the organisation of the "FaT Bumps" and, of course, the crews.

Competition in the Getting-On-Race was fierce for the Men this year, as only three places were up for grabs. As a result, our very promising 6th men and worthy and distinguished Fellow's VIII did not get to participate in the Bumps. Well done to them for putting in the preparation throughout the term, though!

Racing througout all divisions was a lot more exciting than in most terms, but seemed to mysteriously follow Jenny Lee's BumpIt predictions most of the time... The bottom divisions were, as always the most adventurous and our 5th men made good use of this, rowing a grand total of 6 gutsy races and bumping up into the 4th division!! The 3rd VIII followed in the footsteps of a series of very experienced 3rd VIIIs and a string of up 3's or 4s. A challenging position to defend! The girls fought hard against their overpowering competition and had fun with the Bumps experience.

The 4th Men (Grads) seemed to be reaching for the stars at the beginning of the week. Bumping easily on the first day, they were not contented with a mere up one on the second day, but double-overbumped in great style. Unfortunately, they lost out against a strong Selwyn II in a "sandwich" situation on the second day, where half of the division seemed to be within a couple of feet of each other. They subsequently fell to a very strong Corpus crew, that ended the week up 9 (!). Sad though it was they could not go up 8, one should not play down the significance of going up 4! Well, done, ye Grads!

The 3rd men were a serious pair and lazy gents composite, but gelled in true FaT style as the week went on and the Thunderbird harmonies came together. Amongst their accomplishments, bumping the red enemy on Day 2 should probably be rated highest.

The 2nd women were unfortunately placed on the first day in that they had a bit of flotsam two crews ahead of them. This denied them the blades they really would have deserved... That said I was never prouder of the crew than during this row-over, which really showed that the women's squad has finally started to develop some real depth beyond the 1st VIII.

The 2nd men had people in tears this week. Tears of happiness when they bumped Selwyn M1 heroically, tears of laughter when re-reading interesting message board predictions about how they might fare, and tears of frustration, when Caius M2 did find their form on the last day. Considering their positioning in the first division, staying level is an absolutely awesome result, well done, boys (and Jenny!)!

The 1st women's first Bumps race resembled a Triathlon of rowing, flying and swimming. An interesting overhead crab by Christs had Dowining's stern swinging into Grassy wildly and while Churchill and Selwyn got away with a blade clash, Jo reduced the boat speed from full to cruising when her blade became wedged on the Downing cox' back. She then performed a 360° turn and ended with her feet back in her shoes while Erica ejected into the Cam and swallowed a worrying 2 mouthfulls of Cam goo. Needless to say, there was a re-row. Unfortunately, Jo was rather unwell after above incident and so a rather out-of-the-zone Pia subbed in for the two races on Day 2. Christs caused yet more damage when they got themselves caught before W1 could catch Churchill, thus denying the girls blades. Up 3 was still a great result, and we all know what they say about good crews...

The 1st men seemed to have their usual interludes with Queens M1, who bumped out in front of them on Day one and managed to get away again on Day 4. In between, however, the guys bumped Downing and Tit Hall and positioned themselves nicely for a shot at a double Headship in 2007.

All in all, this was a fantastic set of Bumps, and according to Richard Bullock it has, with our sweeps of events like the Uni IVs, and our great Lents performance, earned the Club the Michell Cup (subject to CUCBC confirmation). I would like to thank the rowers for putting in so much effort throughout the year, all voluntary and remunerated coaches, all supporters and a lively and hard-working Committee. It's been amazing and I hope to see the Club continue its way to the top at all levels of committment.

Thanks for a great three years and good luck,

Rah rah First and Third,

xxxx Pia (3 replies...)
6th Jun '06BumpIT!by mcp
The wait is finally over...! BumpIT Mays '06 is here!

It's altered slightly from the Lents - to allow ANY (full) division to be predicted. You have to predict at least 2 (3 in the daily game) divisions to enter. It'll then take your best two scores - so it could be worth predicting everything just incase! Aggregate charts and such like are still here and do the same thing. Enjoy!

BumpIT website accounts created for the Lents are still on the system. If you can't remember your password you can get a reminder on the main login page.

Obviously the Getting On Race hasn't happened yet (I picked the top few GOR entries for now!) and there may be other changes to the start order. When I add any such changes to our May Bumps main page, the changes will be migrated out to existing predictions in a way which preserves as much as possible of the existing competition entry - but you may need to come back and review any affected parts of your bumps charts before the Bumps actually start!

Finally, as ever it's been a bit of a scramble getting the updates ready, so please help me by alerting me to any problems that seem to crop up or anything that doesn't make sense! Thanks. (16 replies...)

17th May '062006-7 Club Electionsby mcp
The site has been updated with manifestos for the boat club elections for next year's posts. (Apologies for the two that are missing still - please note this is through no fault of the candidates.) They are here. Please contact webmaster@firstandthird.org to correct any mistakes made during the creation of these web versions.

And for those who for whatever reason haven't been reading their email of late (or prefer to read things in blue and gold), here's a reminder about this Sunday:

Hustings and elections will take place this Sunday at 1700h in the WLT. Please see below for details of how to vote, either by attending the Elections or by proxy (i.e. if you can't be there in person).

I am pleased to announce the following candidates for election to the 2005/6 committee (in alphabetical order of surname):

Overall Captain: Pedro Cunha, Erica Thompson
Men's Captain: Pedro Cunha
Women's Captain: Erica Thompson.
Secretary: Phil Horler, Magnus Jones
MLBCs: Will Laffan, Lorry Carr, Andrew Sugden, and Martin Yarr (joint team)
WLBCs: Amy Hewer, Sorcha McGinn, Lynsey Porter, Fran Rawlins (joint team)
Junior Treasurer: Adam Blacklay, Igor Ostrowski
Kit & Social Secretary: vacant - please consider standing!
Coxing Captain: Charlie Allen, Dominic Hockley
Webmaster: Bryn Garrod

Copies of their manifestos are available to view (or will be soon) at the boathouse and also online.

As yet no-one is standing for the position of Kit & Social Secretary (KSS). Please consider standing so that the club can have some kit and socials next year, and it should be fun to do as well! If you would like to stand, I suggest you chat to some former post-holders, e.g. Amelia Russell (arr36) or Rachel Munro (rjm80).

* VOTING PROCEDURE *

The candidates will each be invited to make short speech and receive questions from the floor. Afterwards they will leave the room during which further debate may ensue. Silent votes are then cast. The election is made using a single transferable vote system, i.e. voters should state their order of preference for each candidate, including RoN (Re-open Nominations).

* PROXY VOTING *

If you wish to vote it is recommended that you attend the Elections if possible because then you will have a chance to hear the candidates speak and ask them questions. However, it is possible to have a proxy vote.

From Section II.14 of the Club Constitution: 'Members of the Club who, with sufficient cause, are absent from the annual elections, may apply to the Secretary at least three days prior to the meeting, for a Proxy, which they and the Secretary shall sign and date, which shall state: I, N.N., Member of the First and Third Trinity Boat Club, do hereby grant the bearer the right to vote "in loco remigantis", provided that I am absent, at the annual elections to be held on D.D.'

If you cannot come to the Elections and wish to have a proxy vote, please reply to me (secretary@firstandthird.org) stating this at least 3 days before the election (i.e. by 1700h on Thursday 18 May). I will then put a permission slip in your pigeonhole with the above statement on it and my signature and date; please sign it as well. You will then need to ask someone who is attending the Elections to vote on your behalf. Please give your permission slip to that person to take with them to the elections.

I hope this makes sense and that we have a good turn-out of voters to give the fairest representation of the views of the club. Good luck to the candidates! And to the Club in finding some more candidates!

30th Apr '06London Marathon 2006by MHS
FaT and BPBC were well represented in the London Marathon 2006. Erica Thompson, John Earl, Sarah Taylor and Simon Blackburn ran the 26.2 miles on the streets of London along with nearly 40,000 other competitors. They all clocked excellent times, beating a few distinguished athletes on the way. Here are their times (+ a few notable others):

James Cracknell 3:00:10
John Earl 3:13:47
Simon Blackburn 3:54:58
Erica Thompson 3:56:17
Sarah Taylor 4:03:35
Sir Matthew Pinsent 4:08:03
Sir Steve Redgrave 5:29:06

They all ran for charity too: Erica for Medecins Sans Frontieres UK, Simon for the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), and John & Sarah for St John Ambulance. You can still sponsor them online:

John & Sarah

For more information on the race itself, check out its website. Perhaps a team from FaT should take on Maggie next year...?
26th Apr '06Fat make mark on Berlinby pks
This year's training camp was held at Berlin. Around 20 worthy oarspeople of the First and Third made their way (more or less!) via Ryanair to the reborn federal capital of Germany. We were hosted by a very generous (and patient) RC Tegel, a liaison that had been established through this year's Blue Boat #5, Thorsten Engelmann. RC Tegel row on a fantastically big lake that ends in various canals, rivers and side-arms, which are rowable up until the North and Baltic Sea. As if to prove this, Russ and Bernd, our big and angelic main contact and launch driver, bonded over losing an 8+ and ahem, my double, on the first day. We had somewhat missed the turnoff to the canal! So for once, there were no early morning queues to fear (although the big tanker ships and tourist boats were rather scary at times) and we got in some quality water time and miles in previously underused boat classes: 4- and 4x were used - and raced - extensively, as were small boats.

All our practice at steering and occasional wake braving culminated in the Russ orchestrated showdown of the matched and mixed 4-/4xs crews on Sunday afternoon. Over a distance of 2k, 1k and 500m those that had remained to the final stretches of the camp battled it out for 'slave ownership' rights over the opposing crew for the night. Needless to say, the stakes were high and the racing fierce. The first slave task, decreed by Matthew Sargeant and carried out by Adam Blacklay and Will Laffan were some beautifully performed press-ups in the pedestrian precinct of Alt-Tegel over dinner. Lynsey was later observed packing Lorrie's clothes (after all, he was on the early flight) while I personally regret not having been young and energetic enough (...) to have come out and actually witnessed Dan Jane's handstand on the U6.

On the cultural side of things, we went sight seeing communally and in small groups and got a VIP tour through the Reichstag, arranged by my counterpart at RC Tegel. A night-time tour through the Pergamon Museum to see the world famous Pergamon Altar and Gate to Babylon, various shopping sprees and a lot of kebabs, dinners, cocktails and various club visits rounded off what was a most enjoyable week. We can but hope that my graphic description of Bumps racing at Wednesday's RC Tegel 'Club Night' has not put off our new friends from Tegel from paying a return visit!! (I also hope we didn't bankrupt the all-you-can-eat brunch café. They must be having nightmares about English people in JPMorgan kit!)

Thanks to all those who helped me out with this... and all attendees for behaving so impeccably. I think we definitely made our mark on Berlin! xxx

2nd Apr '06Lilie wins boat raceby mcp
Two First and Third oarsmen represented Cambridge in the races against Oxford this weekend. Lilie Weaver was rowing at 4 in the women's lightweight crew and Seb Pancratz rowed at 4 in Granta, the men's lightweight reserve crew.

The women's lightweights beat Oxford in a thrilling race. They came from behind and after rowing through their opponents held on to win by a canvas. Well done Lilie!
Sadly for Seb, after a hard winter of cold outings at Ely the men's lightweights did not fair so well - in what was a disappointing weekend for Cambridge overall.

The boat races between Oxford and Cambridge for crews other than the men's heavyweights (the women's Blue, reserve and lightweight and men's lightweight and lightweight reserve crews) all take place at Henley rather than the tideway. Though they enjoy less publicity than the famous race on the tideway, the level of training and preparation and desire to win is no less intense.
More on Saturday's racing can be found here.
16th Mar '06STCSby AJS
Tuesday 14th March saw the annual Second Trinity Challenge Sculls in the break between the hail and the rain. A bumper number of entrants, a strong field and some strong showings by some of the newer entrants made this a very enjoyable and competitive race!

In the Men's Single Shell, Ed Richardson (Downing) once again took the prize in a time of 10:13, six seconds faster than his nearest rival Colin Leonard (Pembroke). David Hopper (Peterhouse) took the fastest male coxwain prize in 10:35. For First and Third, newcomer Tom Andrews and Albert Cheung were the quickest two boats, in times of 12:03 and 12:04 with Phil Horler finishing in a time of 12:40.

In the Women's Single Shell, Anna Simpson (Corpus) took the honours in a time of 12:23. Anna also took the prize for the fastest Women's Double with Sarah Rose (Lucy Cavendish ) in 11:01. Representing FaT Amelia Russell and Catherine Aiken finished in a respectable time of 12:12 from a difficult draw with the fastest male single right behind them.

Aaron Pascovitch (Jesus) and Nick Woods (Downing) won the Men's Double category in 9:48.

Sadly, the only entrant in the clinkers category scratched, but the swell in numbers for the doubles categories, introduced last year, more than made up for the drop in an event which may well be scrapped in the near future.

Full results can be found here.

Finally, thanks to all of those who helped me out through the organisation and the day itself, especially to Honey, Martin, Rich, Sam, Lorry, Will, Harry and Billy for spending the entire afternoon marshalling and to Sam and Martin for helping me cart equipment all over the place and with the website. I feel it was a very successful race and something FaT can be proud to have hosted!
7th Mar '06Lent Bumps Roundupby pks
This year's set of Lent Bumps was certainly a successful and most enjoyable one for all members involved, be it in the heat of the chase or supporting from the towpath... or computer screen.

First and Third had 10 crews actively rowing this term. Of these, the 5th and 6th men and 2nd and 3rd women had to compete for bumps places in the GOR. The 6th men put in a very good time and the 3rd women did marvellously until forced into the bank at Ditton by an overtaking crew. Unfortunately, neither crew managed to secure a place. The rowers involved should have a much better chance in the Mays.

The week started off with the lower division races on Tuesday. The 5th men, having achieved no mean feat by being the only 5th VIII to get on were the first crew to race but unfortunately got bumped to foot of the river, where they rowed over for the rest of the week.

It was a sad day for the 2nd women, for whom an accident spoilt the chances of a permanent place on the River, when they got bumped by an inferior Newnham III crew. They pulled it back admirably, however, bumping back Newnham on Thursday, Trinity Hall on Friday... and "beaching" a late acknowledging Downing W2 on Saturday.

In the 3rd men's division, the 4th men, mainly comprising promising novice intake, dominated their field comprehensively, cruising to blades and the 4th VIII headship, while a gentlemanly 3rd VIII did their gentlemanly duty by taking the 3rd VIII headship from the undeserving red menace.

The 2nd men finished the week up 2 with a very gutsy row-over behind Peterhouse M1 on Day 4. The highlight of M2's racing, however, was Magnus' spectacular overtaking manoeuvre on Friday-provoked, again, by a Downing crew not knowing when to concede...

The 1st women were denied blades by a spooning Downing, but finally got the bumps race they had been longing for... the one where the bump is hard earned, when Jesus W1 put up a very good fight and prolonged the chase until about 100m from the Railway Bridge. The suitable satisfaction of having bumped the Enemy on Day 1 and having finished 4th, being in an excellent position to attack the Headship for the first time in 2007 made this week a happy one for W1.

The whole Club suffered with the 1st men, when they gave everything they had in the week's fourth and final attempt at the bump on Caius. Having sized up the opposition, which, given some last minute substitutions into the Caius boat were a bit of an unknown quantity, on the first three days, they went to within an inch of their limits and a canvas on Caius on Day 4. Ultimately, everything was not quite enough, resulting in a more than respectable 14th consecutive row-over in second place for First and Third M1.

Although the Club's results were not fully representative of our crews' potential and speed, especially, given victories for M1 in Pembroke Regatta and W1 in Robinson Head (twice...;)) and H2H, I think we have reason to be proud of all seven crews' performances this week. I wish to thank the rowers for the time and effort they have committed to the Club once again, this term, all our coaches and our supporters, FaT, BPBC or other!!

Rah, rah, First and Third!!!

18th Dec '05Michaelmas Term Roundupby pks
Michaelmas term began very positively with JPMorgan approaching us with an offer of sponsorship. An offer gladly taken. The senior squads started training in fours in preparation for the University Fours regatta- with excellent results: victories in the women's 4+ and the Light IV (men's 4-) categories.

As the focus shifted towards the Fairbairn Cup, the squads moved into VIIIs, participating in the Autumn Head (men only- coming first in the VIII and the 2nd IV) and the Winter Head (men came 2nd in the VIII, women did badly coming 10th!). All our ardour and our coaches' involvement paid off: The 1st VIIIs both came 3rd in the Fairbairns and the women's 1st IV beat a very strong field to the Fairbairn IV's Cup. BPBC, as expected, made a strong Fairbairns appearance, with BPBC M1 defending the Inivitational title... yet again! Well done to all involed... a great warm up for Lents...!

Our LBCs did an excellent job recruiting the finest of this year's freshers intake into our novice squads. All crews showed great promise in the Fairbairns, with the women's 1st VIII coming 7th after not qualifying for the Queen's Ergs final and the 1st and 2nd men beating BPBC II/ Fat W1 and Fat W2 in Senior Fairbairns respectively. Well done to all the novices for getting involved with the sport. We hope you had a good term and return to row at senior level next term!

A great thank you to our coaches for self-sacrificing (and hopefully continuing) efforts, especially Iain, Henry and Russ! And JPMorgan for sponsorship and encouragement. Stay fit over the holidays everyone and have a good Christmas!

Ra Ra First and Third!!!
22nd Nov '05Atlantic Rowing Raceby mcp
The 2005 Atlantic Rowing Race from the Canary Islands to the West Indies begins this Sunday, the 27th. Ex-captains Rich Dewire and Dan Darley are rowing as team 'Atlantic Prince', competing against around 50 other crews (including Olympic Gold medalist James Cracknell rowing with BBC presenter Ben Fogle).

This week is your last chance to win £1000 by correctly guessing how long it will take! Rich and Dan need every ounce of support to help cover their costs of competing and for their nominated charities Cancer Research UK and Make a Wish Foundation, so please head to their website www.atlanticprince.com and enter before it's too late! The deadline for entries is the start of the race, this Sunday. (15 replies...)
9th Nov '051,000,000m Rowing Recordby mcp
Dan Darley and Rich Dewire have broken the Concept II world record for 1,000,000m on an indoor rowing machine! They finished at 10:32 a.m. this morning with a total time of 3 days 17 minutes - an incredible achievement and breaking the previous record by 4 hours 31 seconds.

They have rowed alternately since 10:15 Sunday morning, swapping every 1 to 2 hours and catching whatever sleep and rest they could between turns.

The record attempt has also helped to raise the profile of their entry in the Atlantic Rowing Race, beginning later this month, the 2003 winners of which were the previous 1,000,000m record holders.

18th Sep '05Iain wins FISA Mastersby ELT
First and Third's boatman Iain Law won two events at the FISA World Masters Regatta in Strathclyde Park this weekend - the men's (B) 1x and (B) 2x categories, rowing for Laich o' Menteith BC. With an eight-lane course available, the regatta can accommodate a very large number of entries from around the world; there were 60 entries in the MB2x and 80 in the MB1x category. An impressive achievement!

In the Silver Goblets and Nickalls' Challenge Cup, Tom Rose and his partner Tom Dyson, rowing for Cambridge University Lightweight RC were unlucky to be drawn against the Danish pair, B.B. Helleberg & T. Ebert. This pair had recently won the Lightweight men's pairs at the Eton World Cup, and Ebert is a reigning Olympic champion and was ranked by FISA as one of the world's top ten rowers in 2004. The race merited a mention in the Daily Telegraph. The two Toms are now focusing on the lightweight category at the National Championships and we all wish them every success there.

Jon Davies stroked a Rob Roy BC four in the Wyfold Challenge Cup, but was beaten in the first round.

Steph Richards, who won the Ladies' Plate with Leander Club in 2004, was again coxing their Ladies' Plate entry. After beating crews from Sweden and Ireland, the crew raced Cambridge University BC in the final. They were unable to match a crew consisting primarily of this year's Goldie colours, which won by one and three quarter lengths.

Cambridge University Women's BC, featuring Alla failed to qualifer for the Remenham Cup.

First and Third withdrew its entry from the Temple Challenge Cup, an event for which no Cambridge College crews qualified. The only Cambridge College represented in the regatta was Clare BC who lost in the first round of the Men's Student Coxed Fours.

[Very many thanks to Simon for this summary.] (1 reply...)

Finally... this year's superb second VIII song is here.

I have also finished uploading my photo collection from the last day of the Mays. These include entertaining pictures of Downing beached after being bumped by the grads. Also in general I tried to include a sense of just how many people there were on the banks watching. The atmosphere was amazing.

2nd Jun '05Channel Challengeby ad
The Cambridge Channel Challenge sponsored by Deloitte, a charity race.

This summer First and Third are competing in The Cambridge Channel Challenge: a rowing race between half-a-dozen boats from colleges of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge aiming to support the charities Cancer Research UK and the University Sports Complex. It will take place after the 19th June dependant upon favourable weather conditions.

The inaugural Cambridge Channel Challenge was launched in December 2004 and is organised by members of the Lady Margeret Boat Club of St. John's College, Cambridge. The race will start at Shakespeare Beach in Dover and will finish when the first rower steps onto French sand, after more than 5 hours of intense rowing.

The English Channel separates England from Europe by 21 miles and is well known for being one of the world's most challenging stretches of water for ocean rowers. The row will be tough: side by side racing for over five hours in variable conditions- it will make any Cam based race look like a gentle Sunday afternoon paddle!

This will also be a two fold Guinness world record attempt, for the fastest time and for the greatest number of crews competing.

In order to make this event as successful as possible, we need your help. The aim is to make as much money as possible for the chosen charities and in order to acheive this, we need you! Follow the link below to the justgiving account and then.... just give! Please help us to make this event a real succes for the charities.

5th Apr '05Raise money for FaT!!by ALC
First and Third now have their very own webshop where you can help raise money for FaT when shopping online through Amazon, John Lewis, M&S, Oddbins and many other retailers.

All you need to do is go to our webshop and then click through to the retailer's website and make your purchase. A commission of between 1 and 10% will then be paid straight to FaT and can go towards subsidising social events and dinners.
4th Apr '05New boatsby ALC
We now have a selection of new boats to squeeze into the boathouse. A new Lola coxless IV replaces Mary Gwyneth who sadly met her end at the end of Peterborough rowing lake 2 years ago.

A new 'elite' novice VIII has arrived to help ease the strain on Peter Brandt and Titan during novice term. In addition, we also now have a coastal IV, which will be of immense value in the coaching of novices; it is a wide stable boat but will give novices much of the usual benefit of outings in IVs. It will also be useful for seniors during technical outings. Both boats are made by Burgashell.

The coastal IV will probably even get used to take FaT across the channel as part of the Cambridge Channel Challenge organised by LMBC! (3 replies...)

29th Sep '04Trinity rules the waves!by mcp
Further to Iain's post of the 1st of June, congratulations to Andrew Fisher, club Captain in 2002-2003, who was invited to stand for the post of CUBC Honorary Secretary and has taken on this important role for 2004-2005.

Extraordinarily, this means that 2 of the 3 Honorary Secretaries this year are First and Third. The "Hon Sec's" are responsible for most of the day to day organisation of rowing and the official CUCBC races on the Cam.

We can surely look forward to not only better run races but, one hopes, even fewer fines! ;-)
28th Sep '04Social Events at 1&3by LW
As the new KSS, I feel it's my responsibility to get people looking forward to a new year of bopping, formalling, and other fun activities. Please sign up on the Social 04/05 list if you want to hear about any of these fantastic events.
This term, the main events on the calender are the Fresher's Cocktails, Club Formal [provisionally 9th Oct], the boathouse BBQ, the Fireworks party, a Novice-Senior Formal, and of course the end of term carnage that is the post dinner Fairbairns bop! Of course there will be the obligatory formals against rival boat clubs - let me know your particular favourites/most hated rivals.
This is mainly working on the timetable from last year, so if there's anything [sporting events, meals out, trips, more drunken foolery - you get the idea] you would like to see added, please let me know asap, and I'll do my best to organise it.
Well that's all, have a great term!
30th Aug '04The website 2004-05by mcp
As people will be aware, there is currently no webmaster for the coming academic year.

We need somewhere in college for the webserver to live.
If you read this and are living in a set in college next year, please consider volunteering to have it in your room.
- The main responsibility is to keep it plugged in & switched on and restart it very occasionally as the need arises.
- It is a normal sort of PC (but without a screen) in a tallish tower style case.
- If you have your own computer you can still use the internet etc.

Secondly, we need somebody who wants to learn some basic Linux skills to help keep the PC up-to-date.
Like any computer, the webserver occasionally needs security patches & needs somebody to liase with college. This doesn't need to be the same person who is looking after the computer. Iain and I are both happy to stay involved to help with backup, support and tuition as required. Iain had no linux or programming experience when he took on the job - all that's really needed is a desire to learn about it.

Ideally, you might have thought about taking on the webmaster committee position!
As Iain will testify, being webmaster is a great opportunity to learn about writing web pages in html and, if you want, to develop some computer programming and sql database skills. These are valuable skills sought after in the big wide world and make a fine addition to any CV alongside a cambridge degree and rowing!

Take the credit for running the world's best rowing club website...
Keeping the site up-to-date with all the club's news and results ensures our website remains famous as the best club site out there - and in reality is very little work from day to day. It is great fun running something used so regularly by the hundreds of past and present members.

If you think you might be interested you can email Iain and I with any questions using webmaster@firstandthird.org.

25th Nov '03The Prince of Walesby DJH
In a very enjoyable ceremony today the Prince of Wales came to college to name our new coxed IV. A large number of current and former boat club members going back to the 1950s turned out for the ceremony.

Peter Brandt, the Boat Club President, opened the ceremony by expressing the clubs delight that the Prince of Wales, a former member of Trinity, took the time to come and name our boat. The Prince responded in kind, and declared the boat be called "The Prince of Wales", pouring champagne over the bows to mark the occasion.

After the ceremony, the Prince of Wales managed to talk to almost everyone present. Including the current Boat Club committee, a host of former captains, and many of the new novice intake. All those who I spoke to after the event were thrilled to have had a chance to meet the Prince, and many strained to make sure they didnt miss out, as evidenced by the marks on Will's hand from holding the rope!

A few pictures have been posted in the photo gallery, and more will be posted soon so keep your eyes peeled.

A special thanks must go out to the Junior Bursar, Porters and Clerk of Works for helping to make the ceremony run so smoothly and get it all set up.

Contact Andrew Fisher (ahlf2 - Men's Captain) or Alex Lee (acl37 - Women's Captain) if you would like to attend. Coaching will be provided from Sunday 29th September through to Friday 4th October. We hope as many of you will take advantage of this as possible, since it is a great opportunity to improve very quickly. We will be entirely on the Cam, and Mr. Coleman says it is not too late to change the date you want to come back up.

12th Apr '02May Term Campaignby mcp
A large squad of the club's top oarsmen are leaving this weekend for a week in Dublin, where they will be training and competing in the Trinity Regatta next Saturday. (A second page of information about it is here.)
Others remaining in Cambridge or coming up early will be rowing on the Cam.

Last term's squads, which achieved good results across the board, will be strengthened by the support of our University level oarsmen and are looking forward to this term with confidence.
The club hopes to regain a great deal of the ground lost in last year's May Bumps come the end of term.

If you are interested in rowing this term to any extent, be sure to email lbcs@firstandthird.org as soon as possible!
19th Feb '022002 University Crewsby mcp
The University crews for racing Oxford have almost been finalised - sealing the fate of the 9 people from Trinity who have been trialling this year.

Steph Richards, last year's 1st men's cox who noviced here two and a half years ago, and Simon Knight continue to do very well trialling for places in the Blue boat or Goldie (the heavyweight men's 2nd boat) at CUBC. Unfortunately it seems likely that Simon may be in 'spare pair' (who are reserves in case of injury of another oarsmen), but we await the official press announcement on March 4th.

Simon Case, this year's president of the men's lightweights, will row in the lightweights' first boat. Tom Rose narrowly missed out out on a place in that crew, but will join Joe Grundy and possibly John Earl (depending on further selection) in Granta, the 2nd crew. Neil Talbott is a spare; it is thought he would have been firmly placed in a crew were it not for serious injury recently.

Finally, Alex Lee is to cox the women's lightweights and Sarah Taylor is a Blondie (women's 2nd crew) and lightweights spare.

We wish them all the best for the last few weeks of preparation. Goldie races 30 minutes before the Blue boat on the Thames, and the other crews race at Henley a week before on the 24th March.
1st Feb '02BPBC v FaT Cricket 2002by MAC
Last year, we floated the idea of a cricket match between FaT and BPBC. Owing to a lack of planning and, consequently, enough players, the match stayed purely in the realms of the imagination and never reached the wicket.

This year will be different. Black Prince already have a team - we are already strggling to work out which bowlers we shall have to "rest" for the fixture.

I have provisionally booked the very scenic pitch at Madingley, 3 miles outside Cambridge, adjacent to the excellent Three Horseshoes pub, for Sunday 9th June. It's a good wicket, suited to all types of bowling.

Being the weekend before the Bumps, FaT should be fully available that day and will find cricket an excellent way to rest their aching limbs from incessant Grind pieces.

Format for the match is yet to be decided - and will be done by consultation between the two sides - possible plans are either 1 innings per side (30-40 overs) or 2 innings per side (2 x 20 overs). Tea will be laid on, umpires provided etc etc...the full works.

Black Prince BC CC greatly looks forward to meeting FaT CC on that occasion.
28th Nov '01BPBC crews for Fridayby mcp
Ok, with BPBC (First and Third old boys) crews for Friday shaping up (see latest post from the buffers), it's time to get going on your guesstimate for the relative times of BPBC and FaT!
With plenty of May colours on board you think BPBC should go pretty swiftly, but to what extent will three weeks of rowing as crews benefit First and Third?
If you've no idea just have a guess anyway and maybe win a bottle of wine out of it for Saturday night...
23rd Nov '01Men's 2k ergo challengeby jwe
In the new vein of challenges resulting in prizes, I am offering a bottle of wine to the man whose 2k on Tuesday shows greatest improvement on the start of term (in watts). The current leader is Dan Walker, who in the 4 weeks of the last training cycle improved by 20.8 watts, followed closely by Dan Jane with 19 watts. (2 replies...)

25th Oct '01Autumn Head restoredby jwe
After giving out to everyone that the Autumn Head would be cancelled yesterday, the news went out this morning that the event would still be run.
24th Oct '01Conditions Updateby jwe
Autumn Head organisers Rob Roy have said that the racing will be cancelled; it also appears that the Cam Conservancy are not optimistic for the flood watch to come off before Sunday.
22nd Oct '01Tideway Training Campby mcp
Two men's IVs and one women's have spent the weekend training on the tideway in London. Previous captain's Matt Arnold ('98) and James Leake ('95) coached, making use of a Thames Rowing Club launch and video camera. And the club's new IV made its maiden voyage - surviving despite being steered by me, thankfully ;-)
The two days have been peculiarly devoid of major disaster - the worst it got was JPD's car filling with a couple of inches of water as the river side road flooded at the top of the tide on Saturday.

30th Sep '01Steering Committee meetsby jwe
The committee met to discuss how to improve the performance of the top end of the Club's men's squad. Adrian Cassidy, chief coach of CULRC, and Peter Brandt, President of the Club, provided very useful input and guidance, which have led to a set of key changes to the structure of the men's squads, the teaching of novices, and the coaching infrastructure for men's rowing. Further details will be distributed at Committee and Men's meetings in the next couple of days.
19th Sep '01MEN'S TRAINING CAMP MTGby jwe
Men's training camp meeting will be held at 6pm in E1 Great Court on Sunday 23 September. Anyone eligible to row for 1st & 3rd (ie, all members of college in statu pupillari) is invited. Those who provided me with their addresses before going down will have received letters, but even those who have not received letters should come if they want to row this term!

Note that if you miss this meeting but are available during training camp week (week to 30 September), then you should get in touch with me as soon as possible to let me know your plans. Note, it's not necessary to come to training camp in order to row the University IVs or Fairbairns this term, but it's highly recommended.

Information on the start of the term's rowing proper will be forthcoming.
