6th Jun '06BumpIT!by mcp
The wait is finally over...! BumpIT Mays '06 is here!

It's altered slightly from the Lents - to allow ANY (full) division to be predicted. You have to predict at least 2 (3 in the daily game) divisions to enter. It'll then take your best two scores - so it could be worth predicting everything just incase! Aggregate charts and such like are still here and do the same thing. Enjoy!

BumpIT website accounts created for the Lents are still on the system. If you can't remember your password you can get a reminder on the main login page.

Obviously the Getting On Race hasn't happened yet (I picked the top few GOR entries for now!) and there may be other changes to the start order. When I add any such changes to our May Bumps main page, the changes will be migrated out to existing predictions in a way which preserves as much as possible of the existing competition entry - but you may need to come back and review any affected parts of your bumps charts before the Bumps actually start!

Finally, as ever it's been a bit of a scramble getting the updates ready, so please help me by alerting me to any problems that seem to crop up or anything that doesn't make sense! Thanks.

Is it my imagination, or do you *have* to predict a certain number of bumps. What if I genuinely believe that only about 3 bumps are going to happen in a division.

Then I would question your sanity! Get real!! The min number of bumps within a division is 4 for the full 4-day, and 2 for the single day. This means the leaderboard will be better because it won't have empty predictions on it, and aggregate charts will be better too!

Particularly on the last day in the 1st division, there *can* be an awful lot of rowing over. A quick flick through Tim Granger's bumps archive reveals the 1996 Mays where only Robinson bumped Christ's - everyone else rowed over. The 2004 CRA bumps - every boat in M1 rowed over on the last day. Last day of the 1990 Women's Mays, everyone rowed over except Girton bumping Homerton in W1

Ok, sounds like a fair point... we'll change it so on the single day competition you only need one bump in the division.
Richard I challenge to find any college based bumps division in which every single crew rowed over on any given day!

Well, while not having the extensive knowledge (and time...) that some might do, I was originally thinking of Day 2 in Lents this year in M1, where only 3 bumps occurred... Plus a bump by the sandwich boat, though that didn't make a difference to the divisions enterred thing.

... which was the kind of scenario I was thinking of for the minimum number of bumps you might want to put in. As you can see from the above, for the 1 day the limit is lower. Thanks to Richard's efforts it is now 1.

Talking of the 1 day competition... I am looking into why it is quite so slow now. One of the queries is running very slowly, probably best to wait until tomorrow if you want to do lots of 1-day bumping!

I think this is sorted now? It is certainly better... but difficult to tell from here (standard broadband connection) how snappy it is within college.

just thoughti'd wish everyone GOOD LUCK, as i am told bumps is nearing. (would come watch but lying on a beach in kenya recovering from altitude sickness sounds more fun....)

Unfortunately Thursday's one day BumpIT will not be available to play until after all results from today are complete. As this won't happen until after the W1 rerow at 12.15 tomorrow, there will be a very short interval for entering predictions.

Apologies - we realised this needed a solution previously, but haven't quite got round to one yet

A short interval in the middle of the night, no less. How about just pretending they rowed over since noone will care about results that low down anyway and then I can have my fix....

Also, I'm afraid the scoring, whilst now largely doing what it should, still isn't quite right - I am looking particularly at randg's M1. This should have a much higher score than this - the 'error area' is blatantly not as high as 5. Unfortunately I am back at work today :-( so won't get onto this until tonight.... Until then, the scores are all provisional!

Latest set of bug fixes uploaded... increasingly confident in everything now! Thank you all for your patience.

Erica and Mercury have pulled away at the top of the field in the men's and women's competitions respectively. Meanwhile Lyns and Pedro are looking good for their BumpIT T-shirts! Well done!! Specially Lyns who got her prize winning entry in in the space of half an hour between today's rerow and M6.

Will be running final checks on the scoring tomorrow, but it's looking alright at the moment, if anyone spots any irregularities please let us know.

What fun. :-)

Whilst checking back over the records for the 2nd VIII in the Mays (10th being the highest position since the merger of 1st & 3rd), I've managed to find a single division where every college crew rowed over.

2nd division of the 1957 May Bumps - every boat from Caius I, then top of the 2nd div, to 1st & 3rd III (the sandwich boat) rowed over.

What's the betting the Grey Barge man parked sideways on First Post and it was just eighteen technical rows over...?

Was it the last day? If not, was there much change on the next day?

It was the last day - on the previous day there were only 2 bumps, and the 2nd day only 3 bumps.

Must just have been a case where the boats were almost in their speed order at the start of the bumps.
