Lost to Black Prince in the quarter finals Quarter finalsLost to Black PrinceTime: 2:46It all started with coach Zara asking: do you want to race a single and/or double? Who would say no to that?!
Second Chance and I… it was love at first sight! I just couldn’t resist the green colour of the shell… but alas it being a lightweight men’s shell, it didn’t like me back. Bomber tried to patch things up between us suggesting I could use 3 seat pads and a sandbag. I didn’t.
After countless hours of arduous training and scavenging blades from a friendly town club in an attempt to find the perfect inboard and so win Second Chance’s heart (and my race?), the draw came out! I was so excited to see who my opposition would be and prepare a suitable race plan!
Andrew, casually, as I was getting into the double for a training session: the draw is out; you’re racing Zara.
Me: I need to speak to the organisers! Surely they can’t expect me to race my coach?!

Lost to City in the quarter finals Quarter finalsLost to CityTime: 3:00
Lost to Keble in the semi finals Semi finalsLost to KebleTime: 2:22Men's band two turned out to be made up entirely of novices. The winner would be whoever didn't crash.
Unfortunately I decided to aim straight for and hit the first buoy in the course. After quite a bad crab, I recovered and somehow made the distance back being just under a canvas up on Keble approaching the final sprint. I then decided once again to make friends with the bank ending up stopping about 10m short of the finish line.
I may not be able to race in a straight line but at least I produce exciting viewing material for those on the bank.

Beat Devil's Elbow in the semi finals and Beat Keble in the final Semi finalsBeat Devil's ElbowTime: 2:02 FinalBeat KebleTime: 2:17This was a fantastic race to bankparty, even more spectacular than the performance I put up against Keble.
My word of wisdom to Hugo "you've got this if you don't crash." He ignored this advice.
Hugo started on the towpath station and quickly made back up the starting deficit, however crabbed 200m in and Keble moved ahead. I told him to be calm and restart and then nearly immediately Keble crabbed. They set off again nearly even, Hugo slowly gaining distance over the next third of the track. Both competitors decided to once again stop, Hugo crabbing and Keble rowing into a stationary marshaling crew. Hugo recovered much quicker and easily crossed the line first.
Great viewing all round, a well deserved win for Hugo who looked so happy as he crossed the line.

Raced 3 rounds: Beat Oxford Amateurs in the final Quarter finalsBeat FaTTime: 2:14This is the first time I have ever rowed in Pike and I hope it's the last. Yikes.
Sorry Marianna... I got quite close to flipping a few times but alas I survived the 550m I needed to.
(Exit, pursued by a swan) Semi finalsBeat Oxford AmateursTime: 2:08My opposition was called 'concussion express' and based on the Accies instagram, this was from a capsize. She also won this event last year.
She proceeded to capsize whilst boating. She got back in, rowed to the start and we raced. I don't think a pre-race capsize is optimal for performance. I did a start, made up the stagger disadvantage, got a few lengths up and then stopped pushing.
(Exit, pursued by a swan) FinalBeat Oxford AmateursTime: 2:08She told me I was going to win on the start line. She was correct.
I didn't scull well today but c'est la vie. Another pot for the mantle piece (once I've cleaned the ice cream out of it) and a reminder that being a few weeks out of practice is suboptimal for performance.

Beat Oxford Amateurs in the semi finals and Beat Nottingham in the final Semi finalsBeat Oxford AmateursTime: 1:54Me, Michael, Michael's 1x blades, my 2x blades and JGS came together for a total of 600m before this race. I had to stroke a double in a race for the first time ever as Michael told me firmly that he was steering and I was stroking.
Quick backstops build, a few standing starts in which we hit R41 and managed to row roughly the same stroke length and we were then attaching to a stake boat for the start. I had just beaten half of our competition in the W1x final and was reasonably confident we could win this one.
The start was pretty good, rate 40 or so. Held at 1:41 on the split for about 150-200m, at which point we were roughly 5 lengths up. 250m in Michael suggested that I settle down and bring the rate off 38. Eventually we were at 33 and the horn sounded that we'd crossed the line. I then got asked to please calm down next time. Oopsies.
We won tho.
(Exit, pursued by a swan) FinalBeat NottinghamTime: 1:53I promised to calm it down on this one. This time we were on the towpath side and were on the stake boat for quite a while. 99s seemed unable to figure out what race we were (and indeed what 'BPC/DEB' was as a club) and initially thought we were the Master's B/C/D Mixed Doubles final. No no, this was the senior category thank you!
The start was good. Powerful. Sustained. We made up the deficit from the stake boat quickly, but then Nottingham hung with us for a couple hundred meters and it proved necessary to keep trying to fly along at a rate Michael didn't approve of. After about 400m they gave up and we had a nice victory margin in the end.
Two pots for both of us today!

Raced 3 rounds: Lost to Huntingdon in the final Quarter finalsBeat HuntingdonTime: 1:50This expedition was a gargantuan task of logistics. Six people racing, all in two different boat classes without enough shells or blades to go around. We met at 7:30am, rowed a 2x and 1x down and I cycled equipment to the meadow. We all then ran back to the boathouse, grabbed the shells we would be racing in first and made it back to the railway bridge timed perfectly for a 10am start.
This was my first race of the day and felt the best, possibly as I wasn't yet tired. We had a really strong start, immediately gaining lengths. About 3/4 of the way down the track our opposition hit the bank and we wound it down and paddle the final stretch. I was buzzing, my first race steering where I didn't hit the bank.
(Andrew Farquharson) Semi finalsBeat BroxbourneTime: 1:52Race two for me. Not our finest, this time we were on the Towpath station so started down on our opponents. We rowed slightly frantically, and I s-turned down the river. About 100m before the finish I shouted "Hugo, hard right NOW" which I was told could be heard at the boating pontoons. We narrowed avoided the bank and finished ahead of our competition with a comfortable margin (even if it didn't feel comfortable in the boat).
(Andrew Farquharson) FinalLost to HuntingdonTime: 1:48Having spoken to our competition before boating it turned out the father and son duo we were to be racing were not inexperienced like our earlier races. We pulled our fastest race out of the bag however we were simply out-techniqued and lost to the better crew.

Lost to Rob Roy in the semi finals Semi finalsLost to Rob RoyTime: 2:28Having rowed my single back to the boathouse and tucked it in (of sorts), we walked with Georgie from the boathouse to the Reach (this is a pre race ritual for sculling races).
We sat and waited, got rained on a bit which was refreshing and then boated and rowed to the start to meet our opposition! The marshals couldn’t find us on their sheets, Georgie knowingly was shouting at them ‘look on the last page!’. She was right. We were there. The second hurdle was locating our opposition. The Marshals didn’t know (as they were a late addition) and asked us. We were not sure either but we saw a double lurking under the railway bridge and asked them. They were indeed our opposition, so we were off!
We flew off the start and got to our race pace! It felt good! At some point, I felt a buoy on my left blade… a bit later a buoy on my right blade… then again on the right… another one on the left... Having finished our Super Mario game with the buoys, we crossed the finish line successfully, without crashing and firmly in our lane!
