'Go. GO.'
Wait what??
So after giving our opponents a 5 second head start because Tony thought it would be funny to start us before we were at front stops with blades square in the water, we were off.
With a lot of heavy steering off the start I managed to get us pointed straight down First Post Reach with a chunky cross-tailwind pushing us along. Eventually we hit race pace and settled onto something sustainable and mostly-unpanicked... if a bit confused as to what had happened. We eventually got it together and hit race pace after the Bridge and started moving together well.
I took a nice line around First Post but had to fight quite hard to line us up for Grassy, for some reason we always cross the gut too early and end up skewing wide. But not this time! We took a decent (but not perfect) line round the inside of Grassy and gave it some legs down the Plough Reach. The video looked tidy enough anyway.
Ditton was as good as I've ever taken it, almost too tight at points as we've actually become quite good at this whole pressure steering thing. Coming out of Ditton, Bomber told us we were behind and just had to go for it. The lift was immense and we gunned it to the railings 'Go now Andrew go now, wind it' 'Zara go with him' was the call and we wound it up to R38 coming through the railings, with the split dropping to 1:52. At some point around here I realised we were going diagonally left across the reach and just about course corrected enough.
100m from the line I knew we were going to hit the bank because I had nothing left to outpower Andrew and pull us away from it, but also realised we'd cross the line before we hit anything.
*whistle*
*second fainter whistle*
Straight away I realised it was a dead heat and straight away we crashed rather hard into the same reeds Dido did yesterday. Took us quite a while to get out of there... oopsies.
Thankfully you don't re-row finals and the Emma double was 35 seconds behind us.
Cheers for setting that one up Tony!
