Rowed over
A much smoother day 1 than Lents, with most of the crew having at least one bumps campaign under our belts now.
We went in expecting a row-over, with Sidney M2 having beaten us quite handily at 99s Regatta and little faith in Girton's ability to hold them off. Our predictions were well founded, as they bumped out before grassy, as did the other four boats ahead of us, leaving us with nothing to chase but top finish. Our pursuers, Hughes M2, were decent but never threatening and we'd moved out to at least two lengths approaching the P&E.
At this point, near tragedy strikes. A full overhead near stops the boat and half of us stop rowing. With Bomber screaming from the bank to keep going, we struggle on without any semblance of rhythm and a blade fully parallel to the boat, Hughes M2 closing. Chaos and confusion reign as bank, cox and rowers all yell simultaneously. As Hughes come almost within a canvas, we pull away again, adrenaline and their poor rowing creating a sizeable gap again as we push over top finish (and a bit further until a marshal tells us we've finished).
A little bit of excitement added to an otherwise mundane row-over.
High hopes in the crew for catching Girton M2 tomorrow.
