Day one bumps syndrome really. Wasn't our best possible row by a long short. Never got within our distance on Catz despite the fact we thought we had a faster start than them. Downing sprinted, died and got twatted by Newnham on Grassy so there was no pressure from behind as we made our way down the track.
We should have been better, there was no lack of effort but the tech was really quite violent and panicked.

I tried giving a pep talk about how it's not over till it's over and we could maybe pull this off. I am not sure I ever believed it.
We got out-watted. We did move away off the start, then promptly rowed ourselves into a hole coming past the Plough and got bumped on apex of Ditton. It is very very hard to out-row a crew that is significantly fitter, stronger and more experienced than you are, unless they simply cannot row. We did well to last to Ditton and Newnham admitted they thought they were getting us earlier and had to work a hell of a lot harder for the bump than they wanted to.

Ok this one was less than ideal. Newnham didn't leave a bitter taste, this did.
We swung hard on the chain, Liliana had to miss most of the start sequence so we didn't hit the bank and Downing closed to 3/4 under the A14 bridge. The situation was rough from the start. I was hopeful that Homerton might bail us out, as they closed to half a length from Downing on First Post Corner and that would have given us a lifeline. Unfortunately Homerton exploded and never got closer to Downing, but their sprint pushed Downing onto us hard. We kept them at 3/4 until the Plough, when they made a move and started taking seats and seats and seats.
A few big tens gave us an extra minute and a half, but Alex didn't hear Bomber tell him to go left on Ditton to steer away from the Downing bow. By the time he realised we needed evasive steering, Downing had significant overlap and Hattie had to shorten up to avoid her blade hitting their bow.

I was prepared for Homerton to sprint at us like they did at Downing. They did not. They then got taken out by Fitz on First Post. Boring!
We closed on Downing fast, getting to a length on first post and 3/4 outside the Plough and then sat there until bottom finish. We were ultimately not slower than them.
Major victory of today was unlocking that extra gear and level of 'push' that we had been missing, hopefully the 7/9 returners from this crew are able to take that mentality, add 30 watts per person by training properly and murder Downing for me next year.**
