I'd like to blame at least 10 seconds of the deficit to Zara on Luke Barratt, because he took the clams off Pike without telling me.
I'd then like to blame another 10 seconds of lost time on the fact that I didn't notice this fact, despite explicitly thinking about and looking at the clams before push-off
The remaining 12 seconds are because I'm not very good at sculling or thinking up more excuses.
Joking aside, Zara is much better than me, and beat me, so I guess that's the correct result.
My longest race yet in a single, and my first of the season so I was a tad nervous coming in.
I managed to do something resembling training in the run up to the race so was in a relatively good position.
Something felt wrong with boat setup (see the aformentioned clam issue - it's geared for someone a lot quicker than me) which I couldn't figure out, and the seat then derailed mid warmup.
I enlisted the help of Orson to help fix things, and ended up ready to race (barring the still undiagnosed setup issue)
The start went well, and I settled into a good rhythm. I remember thinking how heavy it felt mid race, but put it down to technique.
I took what I think were good lines thoughout, and did a nice final sprint to the finish.
All in all, the race went pretty well.
I pulled over at Cantabs on the way back to catch my breath, at which point I finally noticed the clam issue and got rather fustrated with myself.
Paddling home was uneventful, so I went to join my City squad at Kerb for coffee and cake.
I'd like to thank Andrew Farquharson for dealing with Champs complicated entry system on my behalf and doing the admin to let me race, and Bomber for offering to review my race footage and give me some video feedback.
