Stayed level - Bumped Clare, bumped by Pembroke
Wednesday
Bumped Clare
Till Ditton we said. It's a five minute race we said. Well we didn't account for a total fuck up of a start and losing 3/4 a length off the gun. Whoops. Still bumped though! Good opportunity to practice panicking.

I gotta say there is nothing quite like the feeling of bumps for making you want to absolutely wreck yourself.

Friday
Bumped by Pembroke
Best split: 1:37
First 500m: 1:47
Peak rate: 44.5
Rate for first 500m: 40
Average rate: 38
Average split: 1:54ish

You're not having my HR data because I was ill enough that I hit a peak 10 strokes in and couldn't push it any higher because my body simply refused to go any harder.
(Stat Dog (woof woof))
Our plan was to bump by the book
Get Emma before Pembroke could look
But though we got near
And gave some good fear
They did bump us on poor Ditton's nook

We raced damn well. 8(?!) splits quicker going around First Post than yesterday having flown out of the blocks at rate 44.5. But despite getting three whistles on Emma, in the end Pembroke were the quicker crew and managed to catch us in the nick of time. Here's to a painful day tomorrow...

I won't lie, I thought Clare might get us given the levels of disease down the boat. Turns out they still don't know how to do a bumps race. See you all next year.  (Plague Victim #1)

Down 2 - Bumped by St. Catharine's and Peterhouse
Wednesday
Rowed over
I would rate this as M1's best performance in several years (take that as you will). We gained on Pembroke off the start (despite a coxbox cutting in and out) and slowly reeled them in. We got the 1st whistle in the Gut, the second as we came around Ditton and then the third at the White House (however I was not aware we were at three until after we passed bottom finish.) We unfortunately sat at a canvas off Pembroke without the drive to get the bump. Day two is a new day and another chance to catch Pembroke. (Andrew Farquharson)
Thursday
Bumped by St. Catharine's
Simply we were the slower crew and there isn't any shame in that. We rowed some of our best today, we gained on Pembroke off the start getting up to a canvas off them when Catz caught up to us on Plough Reach. When Catz went they went and we couldn't compete on speed. (Andrew Farquharson)

2nd men's VIII

12th in division 2
Up 3 - Bumped Pembroke II, Downing II and Emmanuel II
Tuesday
Rowed over
They had a good start, gaining steadily on Sidney I. Shortly after they past the motorway bridge they were on 3/4 of a length. Although the crew faded slightly out to 1 length. Then the second checkmate of the day occurred - carnage in the Gut. Re-row time.
Their start was nicer the second time and they had gained out to 3/4 in the first ten strokes. Unfortunately this was were they stayed. Sidney just reeled Pembroke II in for that overbump and not even the generous two whistles of Bomber could get the missing distance in time before Sidney bumped out.

Thursday
Bumped Pembroke II
Is there anything better than winning a four boat sandwich around first post corner with 3 different overlaps?

We knew what we had to do and executed our race plan. A call was made around the ditch for a 1 minute fly or die push, with Darwin M1 quickly closing on our stern and Pembroke M2 approaching overlap on Downing M2. The crew responded well, halting Darwin's push for long enough to secure a (crunchy) bump halfway around first post corner, while Pembroke had significant overlap on Downing M2. Luke's accidental (or so he claims) crab upon holding it up resulted in Darwin (failing) to overtake on the inside of the corner, stopping their boat. This 'unfortunate' accident does mean the boat is set up well for the remaining days of bumps, even if there is a significant puncture in the bow.

Friday
Bumped Downing II
Despite harsher weather than yesterday (hail from the 1 min cannon to the bump) this was our best rowing yet. Our aim was simple: same as yesterday but better. We delivered. We reached 1 whistle within the first 5-10 strokes with calls of 3 quarters soon after. Our rhythm was effective and boat speed picked up as we dropped the rate from 40 to 36. From there 2 whistles were shortly followed by 3. We were told to put in one power minute and we did, bumping Downing halfway down first post reach.

Onto tomorrow: again but better

Up 4 - Bumped Newnham III, Anglia Ruskin, Lucy Cavendish II and Emmanuel III
Tuesday
Bumped Newnham III
Since we are a majority novice boat, it was very kind of ARU and Catz to offer us a practice row before the real deal. In one day of bumps alone we have become seasoned veterans.
Tomorrow, we hope to thank ARU for this opportunity. Or more accurately, our bow ball does. Up close and personal.
(Hazel Herzog)
A chaotic race for everyone!

We went out of the blocks hard, with Churchill gaining on us slightly.
We got a whistle on Newnham, and Churchill got one on us - I'm not sure which way around.
Churchill then dropped back and we closed to 2 and then 3 whistles on Newnham
At this point half the river started yelling hold it up, so we did
It turned out that Catz and ARU had managed to entangle their boats into a XVI++ and block the river in the process, thus stopping our race at around 6ft from Newnham's stern

After what felt like forever but was probably 2 minutes, our glorious captain arrived in a CUCBC hi-viz and told us to go back for a rerow. As an aside, it was mildly amusing watching Bomber go to students to find things out, because usually he has all the answers!

For the rerow we did exactly the same thing again, just a bit colder
Churchill gained a bit and awarded themselves a whistle, we closed on Newnham and got 3 whistles in about the same place as before. We bumped them about 100y after the bridge with Churchill about 2 lengths back from us.

Our clearing was a bit scrappy, but Churchill easily got round us on their way to row over. Unfortunately for them there was no crew to chase. Which was unfortunate for me, because I'd predicted them double overbumping in Bumpit!
(Rosie)
A klaxon a day keeps the doctor away (or two as M2 later found out.)
From umpiring Magdalene two boats behind, FaT gained fast. They had nearly bumped Newnham by the motorway bridge. Only by deciding to spear into a clearing Catz boat did they make a brief escape by getting the division checkmated.
In the rerow much the same happened and they got Newnham.
(Andrew Farquharson)
Wednesday
Bumped Anglia Ruskin
We got a whistle on stroke 7
We got 2 whistles on about stroke 10
On about stroke 15 ARU caught a boatstopping crab. They also snapped their own steering. It is unclear whether these two events are connected.
A bump was awarded.
In an unconnected incident a length further up, Catz also caught a boatstopping crab and ended up parked, which confused everyone thinking that ARU might have bumped Catz before we got them.
Having held it up, we then briefly tried to wind it up again before holding it up a second time
We pulled into the bank with only about 1/3 of the boat being confident that we'd bumped, and the rest of the boat very confused.
Having unconfused ourselves we rowed home with what we think was some of our best rowing of term, despite some hail.
(Rosie)
Many things occurred in quick succession. Wish I could tell you what most of them were.  One of them was a whistle almost as soon as the cannon went; the next, a brief period of general confusion (and damage to the ARU boat). The final, crucial thing, though, was a bump, well before the bridge.
A bump is a bump is a bump.
(Hazel Herzog)
Friday
Bumped Lucy Cavendish II
It was a very wet, choppy, windy and painful row which culminated in us bumping Lucy Cav while Lucy were 6inches from Emma's stern

We knew today was going to be a hard race, because Lucy were quick.
We knew that we were quick enough to bump them over the whole course, but we also knew that Lucy were quick enough to bump Emma.

Our plan was an all-or-nothing 500m sprint to first post corner, and to hope that Emma could hold off Lucy for long enough.
They could.
Just.

Far closer than any of us really wanted, but we got the bump.
High point of the day was Connor calling "Rate 39, Up 2" which is a bold call for the 3rd division, although ultimately successful!
(Rosie)
Saturday
Bumped Emmanuel III
By the standards of W2 this was a very uneventful race.
Lucy Cav disappeared backwards into the distance, we closed on Emma
We bumped them half way along first post reach. Not a klaxon or a 3 boat sandwich in sight this time!

According to the Website W2 is now higher up than we were when we came off the river in 2019 (Starting 9th in 2026, having finished 11th in 2019)

Up 1 - Bumped Queens' III
Tuesday
Rowed over
Peterhouse gave chase,

Jesus caught Queens with much haste,

Over we did race.
(Oscar Allen)
A good rate, some lovely lines and a committment from the start that has been missing from a few recent outings gives us a nice foundation to build on for the rest of this week. (Max Acton)
The first day of lent bumps was here;
In us Jesus 3 had much fear.
They bumped by a hair,
Clipped first post whilst there,
And Peterhouse never got near.
(George Moger-Taylor)
Some patented asymptotic lines from Moger-Taylor sealed the deal (Robert Crossen)
This morning we entered the fray,
And Jesus M3 were our prey.
They bumped with their bow,
Caught Queens' by the Plough,
And Peterhouse was kept at bay.

(Toby Collins)
Jesus ahead, Peterhouse behind,
Up to rate thirty-six we did wind.
Jesus bumped rather fast,
Peters fought to the last,
But could not match our cox's tight lines.
(Nick Nelson)
Wednesday
Rowed over
We pushed to within 1/2 length of Queens' along Plough reach. We slowed into the corner. They pushed off Ditton; we gave up. They wanted it more than some of us. Rowed over with crews in front and behind at station. (Toby Collins)
Thursday
Bumped Queens' III
Again chasing Queens'—attempt two.
Straight off from the cannon we flew.
Our stroke seat came back,
Their stern we did whack,
And next race we have ARU!
(Toby Collins)
Happy and zippy
Finally put the legs down
A bump at long last

(Max Acton)
Saturday
Rowed over
Today was our very last row,
And ARU were not that slow.
We gained a small bit,
But they were more fit;
We gave a respectable show

Up 2 - Bumped Pembroke III, King's II and Hughes Hall II, bumped by Hughes Hall II
Tuesday
Bumped Pembroke III
One length during the winds, half length quickly afterwards. We went full power, there was probably half a minute where we were hearing triple-whistles from the bank, then we were told to hold it up.

Not exactly sure what happened it took me a few seconds to take the stroke I was supposed to. Sorry for the £50 boys.

We caught Pembroke M3 before first post corner, so there's probably not much to comment here... Hold on, yes, didn't Pembroke M3 bump our M3 last Mays? Yea this one was personal.
(Brian Chen)
Wednesday
Bumped King's II
The rowing today was probably not the best we've done at high rates, but we were fast enough to get to one length after the starts. Stayed at two whistles for quite a while but eventually three whistles came and we gave it our all. Lucy steered into them for the bump quickly after overlapping, overall a very nice race as always. (Brian Chen)
Another strong performance today saw us chase down King's M2. A strong start led to us coming to one length off quickly after the end of our start sequence. We maintained an (ambitious) stroke rate of 36, but this paid off as we were able to quickly come to a canvas off King's. The final push at the third whistle, even if it seems like an eternity, allowed Lucy to skillfully bump their crew. Overall, we were done less than 150 seconds after the cannon fired. The blades campaign continues tomorrow with us hunting down Hughes Hall M2 (Piers Marchant)
Thursday
Bumped Hughes Hall II

The river lay still, the air full of dread,
Our paddling wobbled, our technique misled.
A practice start, oh, what a sight!
Two strokes of air, not done quite right.
Yet hope still burned, though nerves ran high,
As oars met water, the race drew nigh.

Off the start, we held our ground,
But Hughes ahead still surged and bound.
Through First-Post, a length behind,
Yet power waned, our pace went down.
Between the bend, I lost my sight,
Only László’s shoulder, flashing in my mind.

From Grassy’s turn, a sight so sweet
King’s II behind met their defeat.
A row-over seemed our destined fate,
But then two whistles! No time to wait!
Three whistles soon! A final cry!
With one last push, we soared on by!
"Hold it up!" the moment came,
My first bump, a victor’s claim.

The row home? Oh, let’s not dwell,
Our technique fled, it’s just as well.
A crab mid-roar, a tangled oar,
Some laughter shared, no need for more.

To M4, my thanks I send,
May blades be yours, your triumph penned!

(Bálint Tóth)
We knew that Thursday would be a pivotal moment in our blades campaign, as we had to get two subs. This threatened to disrupt the pattern we had gotten into in the previous days, especially as the stroke seat changed, and I had to change sides too. Hughes Hall M2 had rowed on the previous two days so we knew they could hold out if necessary. Thankfully there was no cause for consternation. Despite a rocky start, we managed to settle into a rhythm, and we soon heard the first whistle. We stayed at about a length off, but slowly began to chip away at Hughes Hall. The second whistle came soon enough and we began to pick up the rate. We had been sitting at 32 and came up to 36 in order to secure the bump, which came fairly swiftly after the third whistle. We stopped by the plough and were delighted to learn that M3 in the same division had bumped up for the first time too. We go again on Saturday for the final race of the blades campaign against Peterhouse M3 (Piers Marchant)
Saturday
Bumped by Hughes Hall II
Sometimes in life things just don’t go your way by pure bad luck, like that digital circuits section where you were sure you were 100% correct but somehow ended up with a 42/60, or that dream job interview where you nailed all five rounds only to be told they’ve just run out of seats. This was one of those moments.

Going in we knew we were faster than Peterhouse M3, and after two days of chasing Queens our M3 was confident that Peterhouse wouldn't catch them. We expected a tough race, but we were ready.

After first post corner we were around 1 length from Peterhouse, but they were closing in on Queens a lot faster than expected. Around the gut their bump occurred, denying us of blades. Amidst all the chaos our 2-seat unfortunately caught an overhead crab, and his seat came off the slides as he was recovering. As it was now impossible for us to row on, we had no choice but to concede to Hughes Hall behind us.

It's tough, but this is how bumps is. Even though we were unlucky this time, it doesn't change how strong we are and how much we've improved since training week. We've put in the work, pushed through the pain, and shown that we can put on a good fight. This won't be the end for me, and I know this won't be the end for anyone in our crew.

Yeah M4!
(Brian Chen)
