Due to technical difficulties regarding the coxbox, this race was undertaken without the rate. Despite this, we settled at what felt a reasonable, sustainable rate in the first couple hundred metres. The race felt good within the race, certainly better rowing was undertaken than in the outings this week.
Via comparison with Downing and Churchill M2, both whom rowed this and Newnham head, we made gains of a few seconds in the last week, so a reasonable result.
The 40s gap with Hughes Hall M2 off the start was narrowed across the race, from 8 or so lengths down to around 1 1/2 - 2 lengths by the finish line, again sadly denying me the joy of an overtake by a couple of lengths.
Two subs (ex M1) we received.
We grabbed hold of our oars and we heaved.
Our rate might have been low,
Our time may have looked slow,
For no mighty tailwind was perceived.
We would have rowed twice as fast if George had given us five big booms :(

Good weather, half-decent results and enjoyable race.
Despite only having one outing after last weekend, we completed the full length at rate 30* with around the same quality rowing as last week’s rate 28. Mistakes were perhaps more noticeable due to the higher rate and longer course - we had a boat-stopping multi-crab on the reach - but we definitely improved from last week.
For me, (probably) had some good strokes in the beginning but bad habits started kicking in after a while. Aligns with my expectations, probably will just continue focusing on the things I’ve been working on.
Joke of the race: “Thanks for the splashing, helps me with my attention.”
*Apparently we actually started off at rate 32, then everything fell apart, but somehow we got back to 30 and maintained 30 afterwards
