4th Fastest College VIII

This wasn't our best race ever, we had half the crew in some sense of recovery from illness and despite all that we had a decent row. We were only 10 seconds off of Catz who were the quickest college 8+. This was further confirmation we are in a good place to build towards Fairbairns.

We were told if we didn't put our legs down and produce a good result in the VIII+ we might do two IV+s for Fairbairns as the W1 IV was going faster than the VIII. We delivered.
Very relaxed, very technical and fast! A good pickup at the end and no die in the middle. A good result and only beaten by Trinity Hall and Jesus (UEA don't count).
My first race with this crew. The technique was very good, so we could flow along. Of course we
put power down, but it felt very smooth.

2nd Fastest College 2nd IV

We rowed.
We did slightly better at some point rather than others.
We didn't sink, capsize, get overtaken or reduce the population, so given that we've only been rowing in IV's for a week it actually went really well. Didn't quite get the sub 10 we were looking for, and still need to work on pushing together, but we're looking to be in a good place for Fairbairns!

Bomber said it's our best ever row and race. I am inclined to agree. Stayed together, kept our heads and didn't let the red mist overtake, unlike the uni IVs final.
Coming into the P&E we were part of a three boat regatta and then hit two swans. Coming into the swans we were on a 2:02 split, coming out of the swans we were on a 2:28 split. Ah well. Still won, even on tired legs having raced the VIII first.
(Based on results, Pembroke were trying to match our splits as they raced two divisions later and were faster than us for the first kilometre and then died to 13s slower overall)
Definitely the best we have raced so far. Very technical. Hit some swans hard about 50m from the finish line while trying to overtake 2 other boats, almost stopped the boat.
Fantastic result!
The second race of the day, so we were already somewhat tired. However, this IV is inexplicably
super rapid, so we still won! My first racing hipflask and they served pretty good mead in the pub.

My first time coxing a race towards the boathouses. I forgot I had to take corners until we were on first post leading to some interesting lines - but I had a good grassy.
A load of fun, I can't wait until I cox another race (hopefully not another year long gap).

A promising start for our first race (or so I'm told). Alex's third race of the day but his feedback and encouragement led to some of the best rowing I've experienced so far. We'll always remember the immortalisation of a nasty crab by the professional photographer and our 6 seat holding his seat in the air mid-race! The only way is up.
Good start, solid rhythm by the time we hit first post. At grassy, Erik Hedin then overhead crabbed so hard his seat came off on one side. Couldn't recover it so easied, then raced off in 6s while George MT from the bank and I explained how to put it back on. Someone yelled 'yeah 5 and 6' from the Plough. Not very helpful. Were back in all eights by ditton, which lead to some fantastic work al the way down to the railway bridge. Then had to concede the racing line, and raced a coxless city IV to the finish. Great effort from the crew for their first race, just unfortunate Will Whitton could not cox it.
I never expected to see a rower in front of me hold their seat up above their head during a race, hopefully never again...

This was the crew's first time rating above ~18. The first kilometer went extremely well, beating Jesus (the QErgs rivals) by 15 seconds.
Unfortunately, it was at this point that an irrecoverable overhead and a friendly houseboat brought the crew to a standstill. Even more unfortunately, this was right in front of spectators at The Plough. It would be indelicate of me to mention that one of them filmed the whole affair.
After a brief respite, the crew were back on it, and the second half of the race was also very promising.
Once the crew learn to leave the crustacea in the Cam (perhaps they were just trying to save them from the leptospirosis?), this will be a very scary crew to race against.
