No evidence exists of any race last weekend.
In-between then and now, we appear to have learned how to sit a boat (at least moderately), and at least began to listen to Bella during a race.
It feels good.
At least, it feels like the race that we have at the start of the term most terms, one where we rowed hard and went home going “well, we probably could have gone harder around grassy, but we were all out of gas by the end”, and “hmm, we rowed like we were slightly-better coordinated than a dung heap built of manure (with Csongi demonstrating precisely how much we are rushing by comparison to him from the aerial footage)”. Great.
In fact, better than that, as we went over comfortably at 34 or above, having anticipated 32 or so, so at least we pushed together.
A nice place to work from (and maybe next time I won’t be borrowing Isaac’s special blade).
Mate’s subbing in for Isaac was hugely appreciated. He’s been invaluable this week for M1, subbing in on strokeside for Elnoy’s mysterious illness, and on bow side today for Isaac’s anticipated post-Edinburgh-stag-do illness (JP sabotaging M1 from beyond the grave), keeping up without much trouble (I bet he had thought that I wouldn’t mention his overhead crab on the way down to marshalling <3).
We had a good time. It may not have been the cleanest of rows, but it now feels that we’re in a good place to build from.
Yeah FaT!

After Máté's shear wattage broke one of our stretchers yesterday a transplant was needed from QE1 and our frankenboat carried us through our best race so far.
Alex's shaming of our front end on the way down magically taught us how to row and it was a really good race and much improved from last week.
Crossing the finish line at a 1:36 split may have been an interesting way to pace it however. Champs head we're coming for you.
12 seconds off of M1, we're coming for them. On paper, they should easily be faster.

I should write a report for my actual crew,
For whom so far races have been far and few.
Our first race together, but we flew.
Rowing together, trusting in what we knew.
Settling into a strong rhythm, led by stern pair,
Splits on the coxbox for Alex to declare.
Making sure that the blades went in square,
Catches going in early, water for us to wear.
Round the corners what dropped was the speed,
But we knew what we had to do to succeed.
Chase the straights, get back to what we need,
Send it down the reach and not concede.
For the most of the race my mind was blank.
In hindsight we had more in the tank.
With enthusiastic support from the bank,
We crossed the line at a 1:47 with a final yank.
A positive result, at 7:46
But with plenty of things to fix.
(We beat Christ's significantly and even beat Maggie W1- much more to come from us at Champs' Eights next week if we learn to push out of our comfort zone and absolutely send it.)

To get me to sub, all you have to do is ask.
Especially when I get to walk away with a hip flask.
Going into the race, spirits were high, and our row down to the start was powerful.
Marshalling was slightly tricky as we were double-stacked, with Clare trying to sit outboard of us and Kings.
We knew the results of the previous division while we were marshalling, so we knew that anything under 8:38 was likely to be a winning time.
On that basis, plus a £1.99 GPS app on Bao's phone we knew that as long as we kept the split below 2:09 we should be good, so Bao said he'd yell loudly if we went above that.
We paddled down to the start, and our rolling-start-gremlins reared their ugly heads once more, but we made it across the line at 90%+ of max boat speed, and probably only lost a second or so.
Down 1st post reach we were on a 1:53 split, and so I focussed on setting a powerful rhythm and letting the boat row efficiently.
We settled onto 2:04 at a sustainable r32, knowing that we were doing well.
Our split dropped off around the corners, with 2:18 being called on the exit of Ditton, but a huge push as the rudder came off brought the split back.
I avoided the mistakes of Head-to-head and took the rate up to 35 for the last 300m
Just as I could feel myself on the point of completely blowing, I heard Csongi (our wonderful bank party) call for the last 5 strokes so gave it everything and we crossed the line with a time of 8:24.86
We knew already that it had been a quick race, and the results were live updating so we were all asking Csongi questions about other crew's times as we paddled home.
We got back to the boathouse, and took our crew photos, one with the wonderful Amanda and one with the traditional crossed blades.
Finally, prizegiving was at the Haymakers Pub so some of us went over there to pick up our hipflasks, and have a celebratory pizza and drink.
Well done to everyone, and a huge thanks to Csongi and Chiara for bank partying, and to Zara and Lily for subbing in for the day and providing a lot of watts between them!
My first win in the stroke seat, and I couldn't be prouder of the crew I had with me!

First race in May term for W3 since 2011 and first race outside of bumps in May term since 2007.
From what I've heard it was a solid row and they are in an excellent position for the getting on race in a few weeks. I'm really proud of them for their commitment and willingness to get up at 6am.
