1st men's VIII, 1st Mays

5th in Category, 8th Overall
Time: 9:53
We won this last year. Stern four were ready to go again. Unfortunately, we were short due to injury, with Iwo and Andrey both racing twice today

Marshalling was fine, and we set off nicely.

Hearing 5 minutes in just after the top of the reach is rather disheartening, but we dig in and drive, managing to build back up to 36 by the finish.

Nearly 50 seconds slower than last year, and the boat doesn't quite feel even, nor does the effort feel well-distributed. Being beaten by a Caius 4+ is a little disheartening, but we've seen the amount of blues kit in that boat.

It's a place to start, and the best way to go from here is up. (Thomas Frith)

2nd women's VIII, Lower VIIIs

1st in Category, 23rd Overall
Time: 12:16
By any normal standard, having 1 outing before the race is a scratch crew.
For FaT W2, having a single outing with the same 8 rowers as the race makes this the most training we've done this year.
As a result of this massive training volume, we won our category. Let's ignore the fact that the only other boats in it were novices, we did really well by any metric.

Our race plan was to wind to 30 on the start, and then just stay there and this went pretty well. I managed to row quite technically in parts of the race, and with decent power in parts as well. They weren't the same parts, but that's something we can work on in the future.
It was the longest race of the year for W2, and we were definitely suffering but everyone pulled really well and it was a great row all round.

Winning our category was fun and so was overtaking other boats. Let's ignore that we overtook IVs/quads and only beat Novices...

At least it wasn't a totally scratch crew.

I never want to hear those splits again when racing at that pressure, in hindsight the conditions were not speedy.

1st women's IV, Club A IVs

2nd in Category; 27th Overall
Time: 12:41
Despite being vehemently against entering this race only three days before hand, once training in this IV (or permutations thereof) a couple of times I was excited to row this race. I am very glad we did as I think all four of us have made an incredible amount of technical changes to our rowing in the last week and it was a great opportunity to challenge ourselves to race it in quite windy conditions. It was also really encouraging to see how much Maddie's coxing had improved since Mich now she has returned to FaT.

The race itself was quite long, owning in part to the actual race length but also to the heavy head wind on the reach which was unexpected (especially given two of us had raced in w2 this morning and had assured the rest of the crew it wasn't too windy). We are also glad that Maddie has such high expectations of us however we are yet to meet her expectations of completing the railway bridge to top finish in one minute.
Overall great race, really proud of everyone and excited for this term (the rowing not the exams).
