Peter Brandt Sculls (Novice 1x), TL in his single scull

2nd round
Opposition Scratched
Malek saw my name on the draw, and, trembling with fear, emailed CUCBC to conceed inevitable defeat...

... or he just wanted to focus on Foster-Fairbairns. Either is plausible. (Tom L)
3rd round
Beaten by Fell (Fitz) by 15 seconds
Time: 2:13
The race got off to a fairly reasonable start. Tracey was always going to cost me about half a length off the start, and for the first quarter or so of the race I managed to not conceed too much more, but eventually my woeful lack of high rate technique started to take its toll, and two failed attempts to drive the rate up culminated in a fairly nasty crab (and narrow avoidance of capsize) about half way down the course. After recovering quickly the rowing went fairly ok, and I managed to avoid doing any disastrous steering, but at this point it was clear the race was well over.

With illness the week before this race leading to my doing almost no sprint training, and my rather comedy use of a tracer shell and macon blades, this wasn't ever going to be easy, and my sup-8-minute coxy physique being drawn against the rather brawnier eventual winner probably didn't help. All in all however, I thought it was a pretty reasonable first spack, and I'm keen to keep training. Cheers to Emma for stepping in to banksteer me for the first half of the course. (Tom L)

Fairbairn Junior Sculls, TDC in his single scull

Quarter finals
Beat Thornton (Trinity Hall) easily
Time: 8:04
I was a fair way ahead of this guy at STCS so I was hoping this race wouldn't be too hard. I didn't feel I'd made much progess on first post reach so I stayed on a relaxed 32, cornered well, and then found myself with a substantial lead at the Plough. Coming onto the reach I thought I might take it up a nodge to break 8 minutes, but a lapse of concentration resulted in a shrimp and then I plodded home. The margin at the finish was 45-50 seconds which apparently counts as easily. Pleasantly surprised to record the fastest time of the day at this rather conservative pace. (Tom C)
Semi finals
Beat Mauritz (Sidney Sussex) by 16s
Time: 8:16
I had no idea how quick this chap would be, and after yesterday's experience I wanted to keep a bit in reserve for the final. I kept him about on station for the first half of the race, but then he lost a bit of speed, allowing me to stretch the margin without killing myself. (Tom C)
Final
Beat Dakin-White (Pembroke) by 1.2s
Time: 7:57
On the basis of earlier results, I was pretty sure I would win if I didn't do anything stupid. I started cleanly enough and settled to about 1:56 pace, and observed that he wasn't getting any closer, so I stuck on that with some modest pushes on the straights. At the start of the reach I was maybe a second behind, so I tanked it up to 36 and did just enough for the clear win. In retrospect this was a silly race plan because I hadn't practised winding for the finish, it would've been safer to row my own race rather than watch the opposition. I'm a bit disappointed with the time, maybe I didn't push hard enough in the first 500. I reckon with fresh legs I can do this course in <7:50, but the schedule didn't allow me a proper attempt.

Very happy to finally win this event at the fourth attempt (although two of them weren't very serious). Thanks to everyone who helped me out from the bank, especially Emma and Alex. Rum all round! (Tom C)

Peter Brandt Sculls (Novice 1x), TAO in his single scull

2nd round
Beat Tucker (Magdalene) easily
Time: 2:03
Rowing on the towpath station.
Scrappy rowing in the first half of the race, but held level, perhaps gaining a very slight lead on the opposition. We then both failed to take the gentle bend in the reach. For me this meant finishing on meadow station, for my opposition this meant meeting the bank, effectively ending the race. (Thomas)
Quarter finals
Beat Hughes (Jesus) by 9 seconds
Time: 1:53
We were level off the start and then I slowly pulled away finishing a little way in front. (Thomas)
Semi finals
Beaten by O'Brien (Magdalene) by 11 seconds
Time: 2:17
Derek has been sculling a while and I knew he would take me off the start. I was about a length down, moving onto rhythm and starting to look to take some ground back when a steering misjudgement meant my blade clipped the towpath side effectively ending my chances.
There was little in the margin in the final and I am fairly gutted that I went out without participating in any close races. (Thomas)

Maiden Sculls (Women's), SIM in a single scull

1st round
Beaten by Gerrard (Jesus)
I guess I should write a few words. I never expected to win and only hoped to prove to be competent enough not to lose by a lot. Well, I was fairly incompetent at the start and after realising Gerrard kept increasing her lead (being bigger and overrating me it was not surprising) I lost motivation to push really hard thus the last 20 strokes were sub-standard (on a 500m course quite lame, I know). All-in-all I was not pleased with the row but I could have figured that would happen as I have never rated high in a single for longer than few bursts in the week before the race. On the upside thanks to some good banksteering from Tom I didn't crash! Thanks :) (Sonya)

Colquhouns (Open 1x), TDC in his single scull

Quarter finals
Beat Houghton by 18s
Time: 8:10
Jim is considerably more powerful than me so I didn't take any chances. The row to the Plough was the fastest I did this week. (Tom C)
Semi finals
Lost to Hale by 1.5s
Time: 8:18
A very tight race. I closed slightly in the first 500, and coming out of grassy I felt a bit more wash so I thought I was up a bit more. In fact the wash was caused by him sharply increasing his rate and boat speed. Consequently we were level at the Plough, and we stayed level until about 100m before the line when I was hit by a gust and missed a stroke.

Not really disappointed because John's a very good rower, and I would've been very slow in the final having already raced 3 times. (Tom C)

Head of the Cam (IM2 1x), TDC in his single scull

48th overall
Time: 11:21
Based on my result two years ago, I wanted to row 10:40 here. The plan was to set off at 1:55 and move it on a bit on the Reach. Up to Ditton it was going well, but then my legs completely died and it was like rowing in treacle. The second half of the race was 30 seconds slower than the first, whereas it should be 10 seconds quicker given the location of the corners. Too many hard sessions lately. (Tom C)
