FaT vs. BPBC Golf Challenge, May Term 2008

A golf match held at Cambridge Lakes pitch & putt, between Black Prince and First & Third.
Sat 17th May

Match report

I agreed to Mike's request to write a report a while ago but forgot, hence the lack of coherence now. First and Third's scores in this fixture had formed a strictly decreasing sequence and realistically we were unlikely to halt that progression. Thus our only aim was to avoid a whitewash. Our team was of the minimum permitted number of players (5) and number of golfers (0).

Chris and I arrived late - very late - so Jim and Will were nominated by phone to go off first in their threeballs match, in which JPDx2 beat Jim by 3&2. By the time I arrived Jim was in a bad mood and I didn't watch much so I've no idea how anyone played. The second threeballs match was a genuine classic. For the rest of my life I'll remember the first time I saw Chris at the tee, the first time I saw him hit a ball (five strokes later) and the first time I saw him hit a ball without it going on to hit his left foot (a further five strokes). Tom played pretty well and lost to Fisher/Horler by 2&1.

The foursomes and singles matches followed in a predictable fashion. The highlight of the day from First and Third's point of view was of course Jim's point against JPD, which avoided the whitewash. (I guess the other eight matches were the highlight for Black Prince.) Special mention must also go to Tom O'Neill. He was unlucky to be drawn against Mike and his zero points certainly don't do his golf justice: he lost both his matches 1 down and could certainly have scored points against other opposition.

So a heavy defeat to the city executives, but only one match was over before seven holes had been played and three of our defeats were at the last, so it could have been worse... Many thanks to Mike for organising the event and to the First and Third team for turning up. Next year we're going to train.

First and Third golf team

Foursomes match 2
Dean/O'Neill lost to Ingram/Fisher (1 down)
We started badly losing the first three holes with scores of two over par. However we fought our way back into the match with steady improvement ensuring that we weren't beaten until we halved the final hole. (Thomas)
Singles match 3
Garrod lost to Fisher (2 down)
In a rematch from last year, I was pleased to make it to the ninth tee with the match still live for the first time ever. Unfortunately the match was over by the time Graham made it to the ninth tee. (BJ)

BPBC golf team

Foursomes match 1
D'Arcy/Goodson beat Garrod/Tanner (4 & 2)
This was a very pleasing performance. After we traded the first two holes, we managed to stay a little more consistent than Bryn and Jim, scoring a three-over-par round of 30 between us. On a personal note, I was pleased to hit three out of four greens from my tee shots, a feat I sadly couldn't replicate later on in the day. (Mike)
Singles match 1
Davies lost to Tanner (3 & 1)
My initial unfounded confidence was soon undone by a low, and declining, level of skill.

Maybe I'd have done better playing one handed...? (JPD)
Singles match 4
Goodson beat O'Neill (1 up)
This was a fantastic match that went right down to the wire. I knew that my work would be cut out when Tom hit his first tee shot to within six inches of the pin, and duly took his birdie to take the first hole. I took the next to draw level, and although I took the fifth, I found the sand on the sixth and Tom took advantage to level again. I hit the green on the eighth and parred to go dormie one up and in a nail biting finish, we both missed putts that could have won the last hole, making the final scoreline one up. (Mike)
