1st men's VIII, Senior VIIIs

3rd College VIII, 5th Overall
Time: 15:01
I don't think anyone wrote this up at the time because we were all shocked by the result. This is how I remember it a year on...

Caius had beaten us by a massive 16 seconds in the winter head, so we'd been working very hard in the last couple of weeks. It felt like we'd moved on a lot, and we were rowing very well indeed for a mich term eight. It went a bit wrong in the last couple of days, with Florian getting ill, but Phil jumped in and the boat didn't feel much different.

Before the race, Henry gave us an inspiring pep talk, informing us that when Caius had beaten us they'd had a couple of subs in the boat: Kleinz and de Groot. After hearing this, we really thought we could beat them. In retrospect, I'm sure it was a lie, but a very good one.

The execution wasn't amazing, we didn't deal that well with the conditions, and the rate was a pip or two below our target. I personally rowed so badly that I couldn't face getting back into a boat the next term. But even so we didn't expect to lose by anything like as much.

Was it a disaster? I think that Caius were exceptionally strong, probably the fastest crew to race Fairbairns in the last 5 years at least. I think beating Black Prince almost for the first time was a great achievement. Who really gives a toss about these other colleges? (Tom C)

BPBC 1st men's VIII, Invitation VIIIs

1st of 8 Invitational VIII's, 6th overall
Time: 15:10
Feeling the absence of a ratemeter pretty badly here, we hit a solid but slightly pedestrian rhythm off the start before nudging it up a gear out of Chesterton and onto the Reach.

A good result for FaT, and a slightly below-par time for us. Still, we won our division by a minute, which is more than Caius managed! Where were Lady Somerset? (Jon)

3rd men's VIII, Lower VIIIs

2nd of 3 Third VIIIs, 30th of 37 College VIIIs, beat the girls ;)
Time: 17:18
Well rowed! This was a really committed piece; the work stayed on right through to the finish line, even though it was considerably further than they've rowed before. A very creditable result, and well up there with smaller college's first VIIIs and other second VIIIs. More importantly, they beat LMBC III (scum ex-novices) by nearly a minute and a half. Nice work.

I hope you've enjoyed rowing this term. This result shows that if you guys come back to row next term (please!) you'll be a force to be reckoned with. (Erica)
Beat the girls, beat a bunch of senior crews, beat BP 2 and caned LMBC 3! A strong and sustained row all the way. Thanks for letting me have my first outing of the term with you :-) I enjoyed every second, and look forward to rowing with you next term. (Albert)

BPBC 2nd men's VIII, Invitation VIIIs

10th of 14 Invitational VIII's, 44th of 51 Men's VIII's
Time: 17:37
Met ATBH around 9am, and the crew were all introduced to one another. Decided that a two stroke practise outing would be sufficient to gel as a crew before the start of the race.

We went off rating 35 or so, cruised at 31-32 for most of the race and took it up for the finish. A good solid rhythm throughout was offset by a distinct lack of power through the drive phase, possibly due to a slight lack of rowing-specific fitness.

Christs M1 came past under the railway bridge and we noticed FaT M2 had closed slightly behind us in the later stages of the race.

All in all an enjoyable row, nice and tidy, but lacking a bit of purpose. Disappointed to find we'd come in behind Kings M1 (and FaT novices), but at least we beat the women ... (Matt)

1st women's VIII, Senior VIIIs

3rd of 23 college 1st VIIIs
Time: 17:51
Really not bad at all, considering the trials and tribulations we've been through this term.

As for the rowing, it was quite ok - not the best we've ever done, but not nearly the worst (that was Winter Head!), and certainly well committed through the boat. The race was well planned and we stuck to it confidently.

Third is a very solid result, and one we should be looking to build on for the Lents. There's a lot of potential, we just need to get back into it quickly at the start of next term and make the most of it. (Erica)

4th men's VIII, Lower VIIIs

Only 4th VIII, 37th of 37 College VIIIs
Time: 19:01
Not too bad, considering we'd only just stopped being novices, and were rather tired after the day before.

We didn't have much luck with the equipment; the cox-box was intermittent, removing (at least for bow four) the knowledge of some of Nadi's calls; and Harry broke his seat so we lost our Rhythm and had to row the last 1k or so with only 6 full-slide. And even so, we were only last by 2 seconds.

Everyone was committed and worked as hard as they could; and ultimately, thats what matters. Next term we'll learn technique:) (Paul)
