2nd men's VIII, 2nd division

1st round
Beat Emma II
Quite a nervy row, with the surge being an afterthought:- we still won convincingly, but unanimously agreed it was a shocker: have to do much better next time! (Anything to do with being short)
We had a surge ???

Some good steering off the start pushed the Emma crew wide down the long reach while we sloooooooooooooowly pulled ahead. Lots of powerful strokes were taken, but we probably need to be more efficient in our rowing, and apply the power together. (Matt)
2nd round
Lost to Queens II : Course not rowed out
To tell the story of this race, let me take you back to an event that morning, 6.15am, before the day's racing....
I turned up to sub into a 1st VIII outing, to discover that they had removed their rudder getting BP1 off the trailer. Two members of the 1st VIII were busy attempting to remove BP2's rudder to replace it. Dispite protestations, they continued, attempting for a good 10 mins until they realised that they would never remove it, no matter how hard they tried.... We had the outing in BP2, but I digress:

A much stronger start and a powerful surge saw us onto a glorious row: the kind that is painful but you don't want to stop because it is going well. The Queens boat had burned it off the start (see photo of Mays 2002 for Queens' ability to do this) and gone up by three seats or so. 40 seconds down the course, they were starting to blow, whereas we were in our rhythm: we stopped the rot and started to pull back. It was developing into a wonderful row through and a decent scrap. Imagine our surprise to have our rudder break during the next push.... We ended up getting far too friendly with banks, marshalling boats, etc. and decided to pull in further down the course until the end of the set of races and then limp home.

A day of bizarre coincidences, no? (Anything to do with being short)
To add to Will's report, I could just see the Queens' cox starting to return to my peripheral vision (eyes in the boat !) when I realised that bow-side's blades were just skimming the edge of the bank. Remembering that there's a slight corner on the reach, I assumed it was just another excellently judged line from our cox when instead of the expected call of "Push," my speaker relayed a not-quite-sotto voce-enough "Oh, ****" as we landed gracefully halfway along the reach.
After pushing off, we pulled another top notch start out of our bag of tricks and powered off after the enemy, determined to catch them and make a fight of it. Coming under the railway bridge our line was a little wide and we slewed to a halt next to a Darwin crew. As the realisation that we'd lost our rudder set in, we decided to make our way home in fours, using the other four for steering; Rachel still had her hands on the rudder strings, though, and continued to steer on the journey home, despite having experienced the futility of such action in the race :-) (Matt)

2nd women's VIII, 2nd division

1st round
Lost to Cantabs
While marshalling at Chesterton, what at first appeared to be a mixed crew passed by. I didn't know that mixed crews weere in this event said Katherine (as quick
as ever). As fate would have it, this turned out to be the "womens" crew who we were drawn against in the first round. Despite our best efforts, Cantabs drew
slowly away from us. We settled into a strong rhythm, thanks to encouragement from the bank party (thanks Vicki !). Commiserations to Celia (at stroke) who
injured her shoulder after 20 strokes, but still continued rowing. We pushed hard, we were gutsy, but we lost. Cantabs scratched at the second round ( Grrrrr !!!
evidently we pushed them to their limits) but we're still looking for that orange. Next stop - the Getting-On race. (Katherine)

3rd men's VIII, 3rd division

1st round
Beat LMBC III, by 1 1/2 lengths
Maggies coach was overheard on the bank beforehand saying that many crews would push too hard and then burn out, and not to worry about boats pulling away.

Sadly for maggie, they seemed to take this to mean that they didnt need a fast start. They were half a length down after our draw strokes, and even further once we'd wound.

They held us just short of having clear water up the long reach, with the slight bend to their advantage, but by the railway bridge the result was clear.

A big push near the end saw them closing, but never putting us under pressure. A nice row, and a satisfying result. (snowball)
Quarter finals
Beat Caius III, by 1 1/2 lengths
Caius III start the bumps a little way down the 4th division, compared to Maggies 2nd in the 3rd division. You might have expected a walkover, but they certainly were not. Caius often promise to have a good 3rd Lent VIII, but have recently been off target. Last years comedy effort (no lifejacket on the first day of the bumps?) this certainly was not.

We had the towpath side, and so the initial advantage, but after we took a little off them on the start they held us. They tried to draw level just before the railway bridge with a big push, but we responded well and held them off. By the time the bend was well in their favour they were too tired to push us, and we were able to pull away with ease. Well done to Caius though-they pushed us a lot harder than Maggie. (snowball)
Semi finals
Lost to Clare III (II), by 2 1/2 lengths
Another excellent start saw us steal the early initiative. All day we've consistently hit 38 to 40 on the wind, striding down to about 36, and this was the same. Once we'd settled we held onto a slim lead for about a minute. Then Clare pushed. We we're already flat out, but they had another gear. Lifting their cruising speed with ease, we were finished well before the bend came to our advantage under the railway bridge-they knew what they were doing.

Clare III have yet to get on, as do Clare IV, who made the final from the other half of the division. Sadly their 1st boat was not in action, and their 2nd VIII scratched this morning. (snowball)
Just a brief addition: We lost to pots hungry Clare II rather than Clare III (through explanations to long-winded and implausable to go through). The 3rds have, however, beaten Maggie and Caius III demonstrating that we are the fastest 3rd boat and worthy of our high position in the bumps. (Michael)

Grad VIII, Mens Grad VIII, 3rd division

1st round
Lost to Clare IV (III)
A very good Clare IV was always going to be a toughie. Clare went on to make the final, beating Downing III and Catz III, before losing to Clare III. (snowball)
