1st men's VIII, 1st division

Quarter finals
Lost to Peterhouse by 1 1/4 lengths
The crew for 99s almost resembled the May's crew, although Chris was missing. This particular combination was fairly stable; I think we had been out at least twice in the crew order of the day.

Off the start we held them fairly well, although didn't move away. This was disappointing. We then faded away throughout the course. Not our best rowing, but it cleared the cobwebs. (Sam)
Plate final
Beat Catz by not crabbing. Then had impromptu race to the finish line, started by a game of chicken, which we won by "a canvas"
Our start was poor. Catz took several seats in the first moments of the race, and moved fairly steadily out to 2/3rds of a length, and then a full length. It felt like once we settled into a rhythm, Catz started to move less slowly on us. Whether we were in fact moving back on Catz is presumably dependent on which boat you sat in.

It was at this point that their stroke man crabbed. It must have been a fairly major event, because it took them over into us, and caused an after-crab for another of their crew. We disentangled and sat around a little bit, before Priya (the Catz cox) gave us a lesson in racing and called Catz back up. They were down on us though, and so we had time to respond and get back up to speed without relinquishing too much ground.

Nothing got broken, and everyone seemed unhurt. With a crew change for us, and a lack of crabs from Catz, it will be interesting to see where we stand come Bumps.

Heats
Beat Selwyn W1 (3/4 length)
Considering the general cluster-badger that is racing around exams, we were pretty proud of ourselves for turning up to race with 8 girls and a cox. We didn't know much about Selwyn aside from some rumours on the messageboards about relative speeds and that they had the Blondie cox and stroke in the boat. We had some trouble getting lined up on the start and Nines decided to send us off a couple of seats down with little warning. As a result, our start was scrappy, and I didn't dare look over to see where we were in relation to Selwyn. We 'settled' to 38 and seemed to be holding them, albeit almost with their blades in our laps. Clearly the cox was keen to bring Boat Race steering to the Cam. Matt called a 'down 2' which I was apprehensive about, but turned out to be a very sensible call. We sat about a length up, but still with overlap and found it hard to find the motivation or legs to open up the gap any further. We were comfortable and the race seemed to be in hand. Apparently the Selwyn cox was 'displeased' with my comment about gutsy steering after the 3 cheers. My apologies if you took it as a dig, I did actually mean it as a compliment. It was good race strategy, especially considering Nines failed to provide us with an umpire, and credit to both coxes for avoiding a blade clash. (Julia A.)
Semi finals
Lost to LMBC W1 (2 lengths)
We had Neil on the bank, so much was made of trying to beat the 'red scum'. I find it hard to take up this particular buftie tradition of hating Maggie with any gusto, and so I went into this race seeking to improve on the technique and style of the last, quite scrappy, race. We didn't know what to expect, and so insisted on being lined up on the start this time. This took a while and shortened the course by about 20m. They inched up on us off the start and then began to walk away. We had calls to stay in touch with them, and for power 10s and big legs, but we were quite simply out-gunned. (Julia A.)

2nd men's VIII, 2nd division

Quarter finals
Won easily
Churchill M1 didn't even turn up to race they were that sure we would beat them (R.J.C. Stroud)
Semi finals
Lost to Magdalene M1 by 1 and a half lengths (?)
Magdalene are stroked by the Goldie stroke, and their 5 man was the mighty Helge (blue boat), so it was always going to be a long shot. We held them off the start for the first 30 strokes or so, which was really satisfying, but once we strode down onto pace they started to walk away from us. Not sure exactly what the margin was, but it was a fun (read: painful) race! (R.J.C. Stroud)
Off the start line we kept with Magdalene, losing at most one seat in the starting sequence. However once we moved on to the stride they started moving away from us, and although we couldn't keep with them it was valuable racing experience against a formidable crew. Overall it was an enjoyable and hard-fought race on our part, and one that (hopefully!) bodes well for bumps! (Strange)
While our practice start was distinctly octopean this did not translate into the beginning of the actual race, where for the first time (and with bumps 2 days away, let us pray not the last) everything felt clean, together and really very fast. It turned out that this was actually fast enough to put a seat up on Magdalene, giving me the exhilarating feeling of watching us pull ahead of a boat with an intimidatingly Helge shaped height spike in the middle. Sadly, it was not to last and when we strode the boat fell down and we lost our speed and more importantly whatever rhythm had been working hitherto. From here we could only push on and watch in dismay as Magdalene moved up on us after which we lost sight of them, never to regain. The row felt decent but not special, and even when Neil pointed out that they could always crash our pushes had a minimal effect on boatspeed. And they didn't. This had  one further unfortunate consequence in ruining Jason's perfect 99's Regatta results record. Sorry Jason... (John)
