Cambridge Head-2-Head

A timed headrace in two parts, length 2x2600m
Beginning of term race practice.

Robinson Head
Fri 6th February
A timed head race over a course shortened because of the floods - Gunshed to Peter's Posts
An event for college crews, usually of minor importance.

Head of the Nene
Sat 7th February
A 5000m timed head race of Regional Importance
Most of the top college crews travel to race at Peterborough, for this invariably unpleasant but key race in preparation for the bumps.

Newnham Short Course
Sat 7th February
A timed head race from the Little Bridge to the Railings (approx 1600m)
With many 1st and some 2nd VIIIs at Peterborough, the majority of crews entering are lower boats.

Pembroke Regatta
Sat 14th February
A side-by-side knock out regatta on the reach, over 1100m
An event for college crews run in 3 divisions. For many crews, the last race practice before the bumps, and a popular event.

1st men's VIII (1st division): Raced 5 rounds: Beat LMBC (2/3 length) in the final
2nd men's VIII (2nd division): Beat LMBC II (1 length) in the semi finals and Beat LMBC III (easily) in the final
3rd men's VIII (3rd division): Lost to Trinity Hall II in the 1st round
4th men's VIII (Restricted VIIIs): Lost to LMBC V in the final

Bedford Head
Sun 15th February
A 2000m timed head race on the Great Ouse
An event attended by a minority of Cambridge Colleges.

Lent Bumps Getting-on Race
Fri 20th February
The 2000m qualifying race for the Lent Bumps
The Lent Bumps are the focus of the term for college rowing, but only those boats finishing higher than 10th from the bottom of last year's races are automatically entered. All other crews must compete for the 10 places available.

Lent Bumps
Tue 24th - Sat 28th February
The famous Cambridge University Bumps on the River Cam
The focus of the year so far. The Lent Bumps are smaller and less prestigious than the May Bumps, but nevertheless involve 69 men's and 52 women's crews.

Fairbairn Junior Sculls
Wed 4th March
A 2000m knock-out regatta in the 'chasing' format for single sculls
We put two entries in to what was this year a high standard competition.

Mike Orger: Lost to Richard Court - St. Catharine's (easily) in the quarter finals
Jon Bevan: Lost to Ed Pain - Jesus (easily) in the quarter finals

Foster Fairbairn Pairs
Wed 4th - Fri 6th March
A 2000m knock-out regatta for coxless pairs raced in the 'chasing' format (boats starting 100 yards apart) from the posts before the motorway bridge to those by the pink house in the Reach.
The small boats races generally attract only a small number of entries - and by regularly entering crews we have had many successes in recent years.

Wilde/Darley: Raced 3 rounds: Beat Peck/Robinson (14s) in the final
Backhouse/Ponsonby: Rowed over (Moore/Stoll - King's scatched) in the quarter finals and Lost to Wilde/Darley (9s) in the semi finals
Bevan/Ingram: Lost to Peck/Robinson (3s) in the quarter finals
Peck/Robinson: Raced 4 rounds: Lost to Wilde/Darley (14s) in the final
Dixon/Wilton: Beat Cornfield/Downing (26s) in the semi finals and Beat Stout/Blount - Queens' (10s) in the final
Cornfield/Downing: Lost to Dixon/Wilton (26s) in the semi finals

Women's Head of the River Race
Sat 7th March
The Women's Head, on Tideway
The usual 4 1/4 mile race.

Head of the River Race
Sat 21st March
A huge head race down-river on the Tideway (tidal river Thames) over the University Boat Race course
The largest annual VIIIs head race in the country, attracting most rowing clubs and many University and College crews.
