Club Committee
20014-2015 Manifestos
Max Odenthal - KSS
I am a fresher schoolboy rower, rowed in M1 in Michaelmas term and currently row with M2. I therefore have direct recent experience of both senior squad and fresher rowing and the social experiences they offer throughout the year. I believe a change and increase in the organisation of social events will be beneficial to the club's performance in bumps over the years to come, by means of recruitment, team bonding and rower retention.
Freshers' Week and Michaelmas Term
Having talked to freshers who either never started or gave up rowing this year, their reason was, almost unanimously, the impression of a lack of social life and non-rowing amusement within the Club. To dispel this myth, if elected Social Secretary I will implement an improved social programme for freshers which will help to dispel this myth, the timetable of which will be clearly visible at the first social event of term. I will also work together with the LBCs to ensure both that these events go to plan and to get feedback about them. Additionally, I will make use of Facebook in the organisation and advertisement of all events.
Fresher timetable:Boatie cocktails:
- Move this event from the WPR to the College Bar, as this space lends itself more to conversation and therefore obtaining an impression from current rowers what FaT is really like
- In addition to the traditional two free cocktails for those who sign up, free shots on the door, thereby visually enticing the freshers into signing up (I have already confirmed the possibility of this with the Ents Officer)
- Large, visible poster displaying the novice social timetable and the faces and names of the LBCs
Swaps:
- Joint swaps together with other college sports teams: I have already confirmed the possibility of joining up the fresher men's rowers and footballers with the Social Secretary of the Football team; this puts rowing in a better social position within college thanks to increased interaction
- Swaps with people that aren't other rowing teams will add variation to the social life of the club
- I will continue to organise boatie swaps with other colleges’ boat clubs
Other
- Pub crawl early in term for novices-will give novices a chance to get to know each other and the senior rowers better and is great fun
Events for the whole club (these will also be included in the novice timetable):
- Barbecue at the boathouse at the beginning of Michaelmas term, with non-rowers also welcome
- Swaps with the same variation as those for the novices
- Pre-drinks in one of the rower's rooms (I will often volunteer mine) before one of the weekday nights out throughout the first two terms, again with all non-rowers welcome
- Paintballing
- Meals out during the pre-bumps drinking ban
- More expensive tickets for Guy Fawkes Night, providing better drinks in larger quantities and better food and music
- Garden party in Easter term
