Thomas Rychlik - Men's Lower Boat Captain
I'm a mathmo fresher and noviced last year in NM2. Since then I've rowed for M4 and am currently the captain of M3. I'm both eager and dedicated and look forward to participating further in the boat club.
Novice Recruitment:
- Getting heard and seen at Chaplains Squash.
- Boat Cocktails, in the traditional fashion where freshers can sign up for erg sessions, bank tubbing session and tubbing outings.
- Targeting existing students as well as freshers - many people have been put off due to myths and legends. These include overestimating the commitment involved and the strength/stamina needed to row. Addressing these issues from the start could increase uptake.
- Continue posting flyers on noticeboards.
Novice Training:
- Emphasis on flexibility in training schedule for novices. Try and get boats organised with availibilites in mind
- Get established in boats quickly (well before Queen's Ergs) to promote teamwork
- Emphasis on technique and high level of fitness by creating a log of improvements tobe made for each individual person. Give information on additional training that can be done such as at the gym (optional gym sessions)
- Encourage more people to take up coxing. We need more coxes!
- Will do our upmost to ensure consistent coaching.
- Avoid early morning outings where possible: they are unproductive and put people off.
Novice Social Events:
- Work hard at forming closer ties with Homerton, be it swaps or social gatherings
- Organise formal halls with the women's lower boats club and with other colleges.
- Emphasis on rowing as a social sport by encouraging events such as crew pasta and boatie dinners.
- Fish game leaderboard
Novice Retention
- All the above should persuade the novices that they should never leave the club.
- Getting novices to look forward to bumps and stressing how important/fun they are.
- Making novice races enjoyable with features as silly crew uniforms (pirate hats etc)
