Club Committee
2012 - 2013 Manifestos
Rob Stroud, Jason Long, Yining Nie, Adam Dougall - Men's Lower Boat Captains
Aims for Michaelmas 2012
- Aim for 6 novice boats
- Massive recruitment drive- get every male fresher signed up at chaplain’s squash, and also active recruitment by encouraging people to come to boatie cocktails- door-knocking in Wolfson/Blue Boar/Angel Court if necessary.
- Also encourage people from other years to start rowing.
- Tubbing- get as many of the people who sign up to tub as possible. BBQs/toasties as an incentive to come during the first week. Get as much support as possible for coaching tubbing from the rest of the boat club to allow for large numbers of novices to be tubbed.
- Social- lots of formals, room parties, swaps and raves to foster a sense of community amongst the novices: aim to build their entire social life around rowing!
- Training Plan- Consistent plan developed before the start of term. Aims will be made clear to all coaches and novices to ensure maximum progress is made
- Coaches for technical outings will be found from amongst the more senior members of the club, and of course the LBCs will be prepared to coach everything else when required.
- Structured coxing training plan, including novice coxes observing senior coxes during outings.
- Talent development squad for promising novices, offering optional extra coaching- encourage some to go on training camp
- Some form of fitness-based training- build up to Queen’s Ergs, and possibly towards the end of term for the higher boats.
- Minimise number of early-morning outings
- Make rowing (seem) fun!
- Encourage training during the holidays- realistic goals (1-2 sessions a week) and opportunity for people to log their times with LBCs as an incentive to train
Aims for Lent 2013
- Start training immediately- before term begins preferably as there is not a lot of time before bumps.
- Some form of non-2k selection and then using squads for outings until upper boat selection is finished
- Aim for at least 3 boats
- Again, structured training plan tailored to each crew
- Focus on consistent coaching- 1 regular coach per boat- from senior members of club
- At least one compulsory erg per week- encourage erging in groups
- Lots of bumps/getting-on race prep, including race visualization to prepare for every eventuality
- Post-bumps plan: small boats training/sculling so that enthusiasm is not lost at the end of term
- Maintain massive social scene developed in Michaelmas term.
- On-Cam training camp in week immediately following Lent term/week preceding Easter term, as everyone pays for accommodation during these times anyway.
- Training over the holidays: similar system to Christmas holidays, but with more sessions available to do per week (3-4). Warning of 2k selection test at start of Easter term(!)
Aims for Easter 2013
- Ensure training begins again promptly
- 2k selection test as early as possible- squad until upper boats are selected
- Aim for 3 boats (not including fellows/grads/banter boats)
- Same training system as Lent term
- More compulsory ergs, building intensity towards bumps.
Rob- As a token arts student, I hope to encourage non-mathmos to join the club, and the fact that I am ginger should help with widening access. I also have a good amount of coaching experience, and intend to complete a level 2 coaching course over the summer.
Jason- As a stereotypical mathmo, I should be able to engage with the bulk of the potential novices for next year. Having thoroughly enjoyed my novice year, I would like to be able to recreate the experience for next year’s novices.
Yining- As I do a joke degree (Linguistics, what?), I have literally no contact hours, and therefore have plenty of time to focus my attention on rowing. As a cox, I hope to be able to ensure that the novice coxes get proper coaching attention.
Adam- I definitely have my priorities sorted when it comes to putting rowing before my degree, and this will allow me to put my focus purely on lower boats for Mich term. By the way, it was me who stuck the peanuts to the ceiling of the boathouse.
WE ALL LOVE ROWING LOTS
