Katie Poseidon - Women's Lower Boats Captain

I am a third year doing Middle Eastern Studies, and I noviced at First and Third in 2007. Since then, I've rowed in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Women's Boats, and enjoyed my time in all. I was also a WLBC last year, and want to maintain my commitment to the club by continuing in this position.

Coming into the position after a relatively successful year, my goals would remain generally the same. For novice recruitment, I would follow the same strategy: Attract Freshers at the Chaplains' Squash, and publicise as much as possible with flyers and posters Encourage tubbing sign up at the Freshers Drinks, and also bring along other members of the club to encourage integration from the start Wear lots of stash during Freshers Week.

Encourage college children/random freshers in the bar to row.

This past year, our strategy of developing the novices seemed to work well.

Organising swaps and socials to emphasise the fun side of rowing.

Working with the MLBC's to organise as much tubbing as possible, then moving into IV's and VIII's as soon as possible to develop crew spirit, but continue tubbing sessions to work on technique Aim to get out 3 VIIIs and find committed senior members of the club to coach.

And, as always, reward novices with food.

In Lent and May Term, experience has shown that communication with the captain is key, and the role of the WLBCs needs to be clearly decided on at the start of term. In order to be successful, the plan would be to:

Begin Lent term with a training camp, to encourage integration of novices with the senior members of the squad Select crews early on so there is maximum chance of success in the getting on race for W3.

Continue social events to encourage ex-novices to carry on with rowing.
