Club Committee
2009-2010 Manifestos
My name is Hannah Roberts and I’m a 1st year mathmo. I rowed in NW1 in Michaelmas and so I can remember what it was like to be new to boatie life. I have the experience of having rowed in the 1st VIII in Lent term, and have been learning to scull this term (and still haven’t capsized!)
I think I would make a good WLBC because I’m well organised, proactive, and can take initiative. Being a mathmo, I’m also available a lot of the time! I’m friendly and keen. I’ll aim for my enthusiasm to rub off on the novices and not scare them away!
I would love to be a WLBC because I’d like to get more involved in the boat club. I’ve really enjoyed rowing this year and think it would be great fun meeting and helping train all the novices.
Plans and aims for the year:
Recruitment:
- Be a big presence at Chaplains squash, and produce a well decorated stand that people can’t avoid.
- Organise Boatie Cocktails, with free bucketfuls of alcohol and advertise with posters and flyers under doors.
- Make sure tubbing sessions run smoothly and try to minimise waiting around.
Post recruitment:
- Carry on working with MLBCs to start with. Organise a meeting for novices to discuss training plans and upcoming events (e.g Queen’s ergs).
- Get people into eights and coastal IVs as soon as feasibly possible, but try to minimise coastal IV outings (they’re really uncomfortable).
- Select for Queen’s ergs on 500m test times and get at least two keen teams.
- Select two keen novice boats, with fairly regular training and aim for a third. Try to make sure the enthusiasm of lower novice boats doesn’t drop off after selection.
- Organise plenty of formal swaps with hot men’s boats only.
- Introduce a sticker chart for novices, (stickers for outings, races and any other sport). Everyone loves the sticker chart!
- Try and avoid earlies, to get rid of the rowing stereotype.
Next term(s):
- Integrate novices into the boat club by trying to persuade as many as possible to come to training camp and organising socials.
- Get the Lent’s headship back, make sure W2 continue going up and make people keen for a W3 so that they can get on.
- Split up responsibilities for lower boats and coaching between LBCs.
