Club Committee
2009-2010 Manifestos
My name is Alex Caulfield and I’m a 1st year classicist (the only classicist in the boat club!). I rowed with NW1 and then for W1 in Lent term, who successfully bumped Jesus back against all the odds! Having noviced recently, I can remember what things were like being new to rowing, whilst my time in the 1st boat has given me the experience needed to help the new novices in all respects.
I would really like to be a WLBC because I’ve had a great time rowing this year and I want to make sure all the novices next year have as much fun as I did.
Plans for WLBC:
Freshers’ Week:
- Chaplain’s Squash - have the most eye-catching stand by all means necessary including stickers and balloons
- Boatie Cocktails - lots of enthusiasm, stash and fluorescent coloured alcohol
- Advertising - flyers on notice boards/in pigeon holes, emails, info about the boat club in freshers’ packs, posters, facebook group for novices, talk to college kids etc.
Novice Term:
- Work with MBCs to organise tubbing sessions, coached ergs, coastal IVs then VIIIs
- Select crews early to encourage team spirit, lots of crew pastas, team bonding
- Run 3 novice VIIIs so everyone is involved (try to arrange a 4th if possible) and enter all the boats in Clare Novices and Fairbairns!
- Keep them keen - no early outings, limited ergs (test for Queens’ ergs), no crucifix!
- Lots of novice formal swaps with other colleges (hot boats only) and within the club
Lent and May Terms:
- Pre-term rowing camps to build on skills gained in Michaelmas
- Integrate novices into senior boats as quickly as possible
- I really enjoyed the social side of the Lent training camp, so continue to develop that
- Get the Lents headship back and continue the rise of W2 in the 2nd division, move both crews up as far as possible in Mays and get more boats on the river, with a W3 and W4
- Bank party races and get bufties to come back and coach the lower boats to get variety in the coaching
- BE KEEN AND HAVE FUN!!
