Women’s Lower Boat Captains 2008-2009

Julia Robson, Kimberley Green, Kirsty Syder, Danny McMillan

Our team is like a boat

We have a stroke, a bow, a ‘powerhouse' and even a cox. And, as you will see, a true FaT boat at that, with our high concentration of mathmos.

Julia Robson noviced as a rower in 2007, rowing for the first novice women before joining the 2008 Lent's headship crew.

Kirsty Syder noviced this year and then rowed in the third Lent VIII who scored a thrilling against the odds victory in Pembroke Regatta.

Kim Green (not a mathmo) also noviced as a rower in 2007 and rowed for the successful second Lent VIII who went up three in bumps.

Danny McMillan (not a woman) coxed the first novice women this year before having a go at keeping the third VIII girls under control.

The Plan

Last term we represented all levels of the women’s boat club (and did rather well we like to think), and will continue our winning ways with our simple race plan:

Draw 1

Boatie cocktails - get as many freshers as possible to sign up.

Draw 2

Excessive publicity - This will take the form of posters, emails and door knocking. We want to make sure that everyone who signs up actually does something and gets really keen.

Draw 3

Tubbing - Organise as many tubbing sessions as possible to introduce freshers to rowing. We will work with the MLBCSs to run tubbing for the first few weeks before we start getting out in coastal IVs and then VIIIs. All the WLBCs will coach tubbing sessions so that we can spot potentially talented rowers and coxes.

Wind it up

Get crews set as soon as possible to encourage team spirit and make the whole experience more fun. Crew selection will be done on a mixture of talent and interest. We will find an array of senior boaties to coach the crews and will try to have as few early outings as we can so as not to discourage too many people. The number of outings will range from 3/4 per week for the first novice women down to 2 for the lower novice boats. We can definitely get three novice boats together, but hopefully we can convince enough people and get a fourth boat this year.

One of the great things about novice term is the social side of things. We will organise loads of formal swaps and encourage crew pastas so that people get as much fun out of rowing as possible.

Steady rate

Get as many novices as possible to enter Queen's ergs and then enter a minimum of 3 women’s boats for Clare Novices and Novice Fairbairns.

Mid-race push

Novice retention - We want to make sure that FaT women are a force to be reckoned with in both Lent and May term. Before the start of both terms we will run a pre-term training camp for ex-novices and anyone who hasn't rowed or coxed for a while. Our aim is to get three boats for Lent bumps and four boats for the Mays.

The Lent training camp is of particular importance as it is a great way to ease novices back into the club. It will be a mixture of rowing in the day and social events in the evening to encourage people to stay involved with the sport. We want as many ex-novices as we can get rowing in senior boats in both Lent and May term.

The aim is to continue the club's recent success in the bumps. This includes retaining the Lent's headship, maintaining the rise of the second VIII and also keeping a huge focus on the lower boats (3rd VIII in Lent, 4th VIII in May) so that they get on and don't have to sit on the bank watching everyone else.

During both terms all the WLBCs will bank party as many races as we can, be in charge of a lower boat each and we will get bufties to come back to coach boats.

Push for the finish

Win as many races as possible - Although taking part is the most important thing, rowing is great when you win.
