Danny McMillan - Water Safety Officer
My name is Danny McMillan and I am standing for the position of water safety officer. I am a second year mathmo who noviced last term, coxing the first novice women. I am currently involved in coxing with the senior women's squad.
Although issues of health and safety can be dry, and sometimes are treated as a joke, I think it is of paramount importance that every member of the club is fully aware of the safety issues involved when rowing. Thus as safety officer I would make sure that members of the club are familiar with reporting accidents, collisions or any other issues pertaining to safety in the incident log book. I would also make sure that the log book provided by the Amateur Rowing Association for recording incidents is kept up to date and that the annual audit is properly taken care of. Safety will also be ensured by my replenishing the first aid kit on a regular basis and routinely checking that lifejackets are in good working order - something I will have no problem doing as a cox. Finally, I would liaise with other members of the committee and report to them on any issues of safety which I think they should know about.
Apart from the irony of having someone who crashed a boat in his novice term as safety officer, here are some reasons why I think you should vote for me;
- I am fully aware of what the job entails and I am confident in my abilities to carry it out.
- Having been involved in an incident on the water myself I now understand how important the issue of safety is.
- The job involves keeping records and being organised; both of which are skills I have demonstrated in my current role as secretary of the TMS.
- As a mathmo I have lots of time in which to carry out my duties.
- I am really keen about the sport of rowing and would love to be more involved with the club.
