Magnus Jones for Secretary

I joined the Boat Club in October 2004, and have rowed or coxed every term since then. I have trained with both men’s and women’s boats across the commitment spectrum. Over the past year, my Coxing Captaincy has allowed me an insight into the committee’s work and the organisation of the club. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of my time in the Boat Club, and want to continue to do my bit for First and Third in 2006/2007.

Now my first year on the committee is at an end, and I’m keen to get in on next year’s action. I have a good grasp of the Secretary’s role and responsibilities, and I’m confident that I can keep the off-water side of the club running smoothly - sorting out race entries promptly, thinking ahead about dinners and events, and keeping the accounts in good order.

I have the attributes required of an effective Secretary:

Accounting skill

Six weeks of audit work experience this summer will allow me to effectively keep track of the Boat Club accounts.

Committee experience

As the past year’s Coxing Captain, I know the workings of the club and will help bring a sense of continuity to the new committee.

Safe hands

I am a conscientious and well-organised worker. Tasks entrusted to me will be carried out promptly and effectively.

Determination

Any committee is going to have its ups and downs over a year. I’m stubborn enough to stay focussed and supportive when things get rough.

Building on the well-oiled machine that is the current Secretaryship, I intend to keep all the fiddly details of running the Boat Club where they belong - in the background. Providing the captains and officers with a low-stress environment in which to focus on their core tasks, I will work to foster a sense of mutual supportiveness within the committee. By promptly typing up and distributing minutes, advising and assisting the other committee members, and ensuring a fair spread of essential tasks across the committee, I will further ensure that the running of the club goes smoothly. Organising affordable quality Dinners is also high on my list of priorities, as is ramping up incident security for these in as non-intrusive a way as possible.
