Club Committee
2005-2006 Manifestos
Amelia Russell for Kit and Social Secretary
Me
I’m a fifth year clinical medical student, and since signing my life away to First and Third way back in 2000 I’ve rowed fourteen out of fifteen terms. During that time, I have also acquired an enormous quantity of blue and gold kit, and had a great time at lots and lots of social events. I have previous committee experience as a lower boats captain in the 2001-2 committee, and have close friendships with several previous holders of the post. I like organising things, having a good time and wearing as much poncy kit as possible, which I think gives me a good start at being a successful KSS.
Social
Garden parties, bops, 'treasure hunts', barbecues, fireworks, cruises on the Georgina all help to foster great club spirit and provide excellent distraction from the less enjoyable aspects of college life (such as degrees and revision). If elected I will
- Organise traditional club social events, such as boat club bops, May week midnight punting, the fireworks party, the annual ‘treasure hunt’, STCS cocktails and the freshers’ barbecue
- Aim to repeat, and build on, the success of more recent socials – the Georgina cruise and punting regatta for example
- Introduce new events, like a summer Strawberries, Meringues and Champagne party (possibly in the fellows’ garden), and smaller scale events to entertain those of us still in Cambridge during the vacations, such as curries, punting trips and five-a-side football
- Integrate novices into all aspects of the club social life, so that they get as hooked as we all did!
- Be open to suggestions for new social events
- Continue to ensure that we are socially superior to the Red Scum, and aim to demonstrate this at every possible opportunity
Inter- and Intra-boat-club formal halls are also great fun, especially during the long dark winter months, and if elected I will organise these with a diverse range of college crews, for both guys and girls, as well as aiming for a termly formal hall for the whole club.
Kit
Blue and gold kit is great. I love it. Stripy kit is great too. In fact, kit is generally great. More kit is always a good thing. Therefore, I propose to
- Put in a termly kit order and make sure it arrives before Bumps
- Extend the range of kit to include girls zephyrs, visors and indeed anything else in which there is sufficient interest expressed
- Investigate further antipodean kit buying opportunities – this will hopefully save lots of your money so that you can buy more kit for the same amount
- Arrange another batch of FaT thongs and boxers
- Make sure that novices have smart blue and gold kit at an affordable price
- Keep a stock of gold and field club socks so that they are available at all times; novices inevitably forget to go and buy them and I for one am always losing mine
- Wear FaT kit as often as possible to advertise it to you all, so that you will buy it. This will also make the other colleges jealous that they don’t have such good colours as blue and gold.
- Continue to ensure that we are more superiorly dressed than the Red Scum, and aim to demonstrate this at every possible opportunity
Between late February and early April 2006, I will be out of the country for a period of eight weeks on my elective, and will be in fairly limited contact. This period includes about two weeks near the end of Lent term, bumps, and the Easter vacation, but I will be back by the beginning of May term. I will make sure to make adequate provision for KSS cover during this time, and am confident that I can make arrangements to ensure that noone is left kit-less or without a social life.
I’m an enthusiastic and well-organised FaT veteran, and I aim to make sure that First and Third remains the premier boat club, both on and off the Cam.
