Andy Wong - Men's and Overall Captain

Men's Captain

It is always difficult to maintain a high quality of rowing in Cambridge, between the ludicrously short terms and obscenely long holidays. I believe that, over the next year, a longer-term view to training will be of great benefit to our crews in the Mays and, hopefully, Henley. A strong Fairbairns and Lents performance represent achievable targets along the way.

During the terms, this can be achieved by having a training plan, so that both crew and coaches know what they are aiming to achieve week by week. I intend to draw on the unpaid coaches who have helped the boat club greatly over the last few years, and having such a plan will introduce a bit more consistency into the coaching. I would look into appointing a 'head coach' who could develop such a long term plan, with the focus in Michaelmas on improving general fitness and technique of the senior rowers.

I would encourage seniors to take part in training in the week both before and after term to maintain technique, and set up a land training plan to keep a baseline level of fitness during the holidays. With efficient water and land training, the time pressures of rowing can be relieved, and hopefully, this will encourage seniors to keep rowing even in Easter term.

It is also important to recognise that the boat club needs to cater for recreational rowers as well. While outings are more limited in numbers, effective coaching will help to improve the standard and enjoyment of rowing. This will contribute to strength in depth within the boat club.

Overall Captain

If elected as overall Captain, I would hope to foster the sense of community spirit between the two halves of the boat club both on and off the water. It is important that as well as taking training seriously, rowing should be enjoyable, and I believe that this, as well as greater interaction between novices and senior will aid novice retention.

While the running of the boat club is rightfully the responsibility of the committee members, I hope that senior members of the boat club, both past and present, will continue to support the boat club, especially in Michaelmas when there are a great number of novices. This would take a little of the burden off LBCs that term, and prevent them feeling 'burnt out' by the end of Michaelmas.

With regards to equipment, the club is fortunate in that there is nothing that urgently requires replacing. Any purchases would be carefully considered, but nearer the top of the list would be: replacement of some of the older small boats, another set of women's blades, sculling blades, replacement of weights and racks.

Personal Notes

I noviced at First and Third, a long time ago (well, 2000) and have coxed and rowed (occasionally) in a variety of boats from the 1st Lent VIII to the 7th May VIII. Next year, I will be free from the burden of exams, starting a PhD on computational fluid dynamics and have no intentions to trial (being a tad too FaT), so will have the time and experience to maintain a successful and fun boat club.
