Zoe Michlig, Dilini Nanayakkara and Pia Schäfer - Women's Lower Boats Captains
Zoe noviced in the 1st VIII in Michaelmas Term 2003. She then went on to row (and blade) with the 2nd VIII in Lent and May term.
Dilini noviced as a cox (and rower) in Michaelmas 2003 coxing the 1st Novice Men, and coxed the 3rd Men's VIII in the Lents.
Pia also noviced in this year's 1st Novice VIII, then rowed with the 1st Lent VIII and the 1st May VIII. She will be doing Dev Squad over the summer and is considering trialling.
OUR AIMS
Short Term (Michaelmas)
- Recruit as many Freshers as possible… obviously. Try to steal people from other sports, too. Try to entice people who have rowed at school to row for College.
- Try and round up people already in the College, mainly amongst our year (next year's 2nd years), especially, of course if they show potential. E.g. 'Mini Me's' for coxes.
- Target cox material.
Long Term
- Get people 'addicted' during Michaelmas and keep them on for Lents (no, the river does NOT flood in Lent term!!!)
- Work on cox shortage turn around
- Capitalise on the women's squad current potential
HOW WE MEAN TO ACHIEVE THIS
- Thorough preparation over the summer holidays to ensure 'watertight' performance in the first weeks of Michaelmas. This is crucial, particularly, since Pia's trialling will not allow us to waste time. This will include things like trying to book cocktails location now, compiling and printing flyers and booklet with pictures, contact details, club and rowing overview, diary of Mich term events etc, lining up coaches long way ahead or learning how to cox (Pia, Zoe)
- Good organisation once term has started. We will focus on out-sourcing (of e.g. coaching) and delegation of responsibilities amongst the three of us. We know that especially the first weeks will be busy and should therefore try to organise ourselves as effectively as possible.
- Very close cooperation with MLBCs (as well as the Women's and Coxing Captains). Events like the our appearance at the Chaplain's Squash, Fresher's Cocktails, the (very successful) Toastie's night, Bonfire night, intra-FaT formals should all be organised as a clear joint-venture. We should remember that for most of us rowing was first and foremost a social thing when we first started.
- Integrating novices quickly into the 'Circle of Love' that is FaT. Novices that feel at home in the Boat Club should be less likely deterred by the occasional inconvenience, e.g. early mornings (to be avoided) or the dampness of Lent.
- Improving the cox-support system. For this it is good to have a cox on the team, and for Pia and Zoe to learn how to cox so that they can understand the challenges novice coxes face. We will work closely with and act as a complement to the work of the Coxing Captain
- Making the long term development of the Club a prime objective. Of course we would like to see our novices repeat or improve on last year's set of novice results. It is important however, to see beyond Novice Fairbairns.
