2003-2004 Manifestos
Tom Coker, Honey Duan, Chris Dunleavy, David Minch Dixon - Men's Lower Boats' Captains
Tom Coker
Mathmo. Enough said. Committed and enthusiastic rower, noviced in the first VIII in Michaelmas term 2002, Queen's ergs champions, continued rowing in the third VIII for the Lents, and currently rowing in the second VIII.
Honey Duan
Noviced in Michaelmas term 2002. Rowed in Clare Novices, but decided that exercising the voice was far more important than my physical fitness. Binning NatSci lectures in favour of early morning outings and getting friendly with barges are particular specialities...
Chris Dunleavy
My name is Chris, and I'm a NatSci. I noviced originally in the second VIII, but moved up to the firsts for the winter head and onwards. Rowed in the third Lent VIII and loved it! For the Mays I'm in the thirds again.
David Minch Dixon
Another mathmo, yay. Noviced in the 1st VIII Michaelmas 2002. Rowed in M2 in the Lents and will row for M3 in the Mays. Joint 1st and 3rd silly erg-game champion. Looks like no-one else on the planet... apparently.
Main Aims:
Recruit novices.
Win Races.
Retain Novices.
Do well in bumps.
Simple.
Novice Recruitment:
- Lively representation at the Chaplains Squash.
- Boat Club Squash, in the traditional fashion where freshers can sign up for erg sessions, bank tubbing session and tubbing outings.
- Dave will not be allowed to dance.
- Targeting existing students as well as freshers - there is much undiscovered talent out there.
- Will continue the campaign of flyers successfully instituted last year.
- Aim to recruit more arts students.
Novice Training:
- Emphasis on flexibility in training schedule for novices. It's a busy time of year for all.
- Get established in boats quickly (well before Queen's Ergs)
- Emphasis on technique and high level of fitness. Sit up.
- Encourage more people to take up coxing.
- Swiftly induct novices into the boat club gym.
- Will do our upmost to ensure consistent coaching.
- Will try and avoid too many early morning outings.
- Organise some light land training to help develop strength, technique and fitness.
Novice Social Events:
- Organise formal halls with the women's lower boats club and with other colleges.
- Emphasis on rowing as a social sport.
- Tom Coker will not make any speeches.
- Continue good publicity of boat club dinners, fireworks and BBQ.
Novice Retention
- All the above should persuade the novices that they should never leave the club.
- Emphasis on bumps being the most fun you will ever have!
- Tell the novices about the Stomp.
Postscript
We are all enthusiastic, and love this sport. We would love to be able to introduce more people to it.
Also, in the Lent and May terms, we will continune to uphold the high standards and commitment necessary for the lower boats to maintain and hopefully improve their Bumps standings.
We will select crews for the lower boats promptly following the selection of the first and second VIII's, to ensure that crews are training together for the maximum period before bumps. Lower boats crews will be entered for as many races as they feel are manageable, as races are really fun!
Final thought... vote for us!
