Daniel Holland - Men's and Overall Captaincy

Men's Captaincy

To develop a successful boat club we need to ensure that we have a squad of people all competing for places in the top crews, particularly in the Mays. We are currently languishing in a position far below our potential in the May Bumps. To do this I would like to spend Michaelmas term focussing on technique and small boats work and using this to enable greater sparring between oarsmen. It is this small boats work that will enable us to develop the technique required for successful Lent and May terms. Ultimately I see the May bumps as our primary focus for the year, but the Lents Headship is a challenging but potentially achievable goal on that path.

Training will have a long-term focus. In order for oarsmen to reach their full potential it is essential that they have a good base fitness. To aid this land training logs will be required. Also, and effort will be made to streamline training and reduce the time wasting both on and off the water. This will enable people to keep up with their course work throughout the year, as it is essential that they do not feel overwhelmed come May term when exam pressures increase.

Overall Captaincy

One of the major concerns this year has been on how the boat club spends its money, both on day-to-day expenses and on equipment purchases. With regard to the day-to-day expenditure of the boat club funds, I do not see this as an issue for the general club. However, I will endeavour to get the accounts thoroughly examined.

With regard to equipment, at present I feel we have sufficient fours and sculls but that these require some maintenance. The first major purchase would be an additional pair. The purchases would be for both men's and women's use. I do not anticipate buying an VIII next year, but if sufficient funds are available would look to first replace TR5 or Mary Tudor with a boat suitable for both men's and women's novices.

I would also like to reintroduce the internal small boats regattas, such as the Wyatt Pairs, to build on the success of STCS.
