Club Committee
2001 - 2002 Manifestos
Dan Jane, Jonathon Davies and Henry Clouting for
Men's Lower Boats Captains 2001-02
Proposed Novice Timetable:
- Start with short initiation on ergs, followed by bank tub, tubbing and Vhs.
- Develop last year’s successful timetable (hopefully without delays due to flooding).
- All novices to have one Vhs outing each week for the first three weeks.
- All novices to have at least two tubbing sessions in the first four weeks.
- 500m tests in the third week of term.
- Crew selection in weeks 3 and 4 for Queens/Co-operative erg competition.
- Early crew selection should develop crew experience for Clare Novices, Winter Head and Fairbairns.
- In the second half of term aim for 4 outings per week for 1st boat, 3 outings per week for 2nd boat with fewer for the rest of the boats.
- Mixed crew circuit sessions throughout the term.
Attracting Rowers and Coxes:
- Send out flyer with fresher’s handbook.
- Extensive poster campaign across prominent notice boards.
- Ask to speak at events, and advertise on freshers e-mail.
- Encourage novices to sign up at Chaplain’s Squash.
- Run boatie squash with free alcohol.
- Attract coxes by making them feel important and supported.
- Promote intercourse between experienced and novice coxes.
- Promote hard work without using a forcefiul attitude.
Other Activities:
- Run lower boats training camps before the Lent and Easter terms.
- Obtain experienced coaches for the top novices and lower boats.
- Plan well-organised, regular novice formal halls, hopefully including a First and Third men/women event. This will help to integrate the novices into the boat club.
- Orchestrate novice cocktails in October.
- Run website specifically for novices, including technique guide (to be built up over the term), novices diary and a ‘how to put the boat away safely’ guide.
- Design silly themed novice T-shirt.
