Guy Taylor - Secretary

The Job

Rowing is about several things. These include exercise, commitment, ambition and fun. I think that fun is the most important of those. I see the job of secretary as one that tries to remove all obstacles to fun. As secretary, I would aim to take the stress out of the lives of other members of the committee, and of the club as a whole, in the following ways:

  1. Constructing a calendar of the year early on, booking all necessary venues for dinners and meetings as soon as possible.
  2. Keeping in regular e-mail contact with the club, informing the whole club of what is happening, even when it may not affect everybody (e.g. Committee meetings, race results, river closures). Also, I am aware that not everybody has a computer and network connection in his or her room, especially in the first year, and so I will encourage the revival of use of the Great Gate notice board. This has dwindled this year and it is more convenient for many people then the New Court computer room.
  3. Assisting the Captains in the day-to-day running of the club. Included in this, I am in favour of the further co-operation between the Men’s and Women’s sections of the club, which improved greatly this year and will hopefully continue to do so next year.
  4. Laughing in the face of adversity.

In addition, I will relish the opportunity to run 2nd Trinity Challenge Sculls, to negotiate with College authorities over dinner venues and to write minutes of Committee meetings to keep us all amused.

Me

I am a second year Mathematician. I have rowed for five of my six terms at Cambridge so far and I will row at a high commitment level next year. I can’t imagine, even in my wildest dreams, that the job of secretary could take as much time as lower boats’ captain so I will certainly have the time to devote to this job.

I believe that the success of our lower boats this year is illustrative of my ability to run an organised, efficient operation. I am very approachable and I know almost all of the people currently rowing for the club through my job as lower boats’ captain. I hope that as secretary, I would be able to continue to improve the links between upper and lower boats, by getting to know all of next year’s novices, from both the men’s and women’s clubs, early on.

The Result

In short, dinners will be eaten, races will be entered, minutes will be written, accounts will be kept, and you won’t notice a thing.
